Rumor: Microsoft removing Kinect requirement for Xbox One

I guess MS just does not care about consumer confidence. Why would anyone want to buy the console on day one? MS has shown they are willing to change anything at any moment.

"People" means enough people to make it a bad idea to go to market with those features. They wouldn't have changed anything if the majority of people agreed with what you wanted.

I was under the impression DRM was the problem. The new Kinect didn't affect troops overseas, used games, and region locks. They might drop a potentially good tech amidst all this bullshit and that sucks (let's be for real, who will bother with it if it's not included). Didn't think I'd feel this way about this console.

I'm just waiting for them to announce the 349 kinectless Xbox One anytime now, they are so desperate, i still wouldn't buy it, i'd buy a Wii U instead with that money.

Wouldn't buy one even at "free"

We don't actually know that yet. Yes, we've seen some leaked specs but we still don't know if the performance gap is really that large in the real world.
Didn't the MGS guy say that the gap is small?

Well he isnt going to say shit son ps quad be smashing dat xbone kid. The fact a few devs have even said there is a gap is telling in itself.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
I have doubts this is true considering how integrated the Kinect is with the system and how much money they spent on it.
Either way, this will go down in history as one of the most mismanaged consoles ever. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a fourth Xbox.

All the bullshit about "all in one"? GONE

All the bullshit about the "infinite power of the cloud"? GONE

All the work from their engineers making a new environment? GONE

And what we have? A much less powerful next gen console with NOTHING appealing on it.

How is all that stuff not still there? Are they removing the HDMI-in and nuking Azure while they are at it?

This forum is hilarious sometimes. People complain about something and then complain even more when they get their way.

If they're removing the Kinect connection, it will end up killing much of their work on Kinect integration. Basically MS would be torpedoing their entire business plan to dominate that living room.

Did they have a legitimate chance of "dominating the living room" to begin with? With no used/traded/loaned games allowed? With a steeper price tag than the competition with superior specs?

You know what's crazy? A lot of people view the Xbox team as the profitable, well-run bright spot of Microsoft.

Well I think the 360 probably was a good product compared to the rest of the stuff MS ships. Now it seems to be in line with the rest of MS products.

Sounds like Kinect will be bundled in still (which is the right move IMO) but they are going to let you unplug it to stop fears of syping/privacy breaches.

If true, bravo MS, bravo.

Does anyone else allow the train of thought that since nobody else with a shred of credibility has picked up on this that it is a load of horse shit?

This is a perfectly reasonable line of thought. Why hasn't this been reported by anyone else? The DRM rumor/news was everywhere

I wouldn't be too sure bro. At this point MS are willing to do anything, even scrapping the whole god damn project.

No one wants this kind of device. Folks just wanted a no-bullshit game console. I firmly believe if anything "won" the living room, it's the iPad.

Nothing appealing? You have to be trolling. Dead Rising 3 looks pretty appealing to me.

Now say that you're allowing indie self-publishing and then I'll pretty much be happy.

(Hoping they're saving that for Build, but not expecting it.)

Wow - backtracking upon backtracking upon backtracking.

At this point it's practically an upgraded 360.

I wish I could be at one of the cubicles where their engineers and designers are talking about all of this. Their entire 2-3-4 years work going down the drain in a matter of days.

The source(s) strike me as questionable and more likely misunderstanding the information given to them.

Yes. I think there is a gap. But nowhere near as big as a lot of Gaffers think their is.

I wonder if these means all the touted "privacy settings" for the Kinect were just BS as well. Obviously if those actually functioned as advertised (and this could obviously be tested) then what's even the point of this functionally. It's obviously just for PR purposes at this point - which is hilarious because I think even a kindergartner could have told them back whenever the project started that their policies would be a PR nightmare.

Isnt that pretty much what PS4 is? A PS3 with prettier graphics minus the cell tech?

Except PS4 is more powerful than the competition period. Of course, one could also count all the sharing and stuff and the newer OS features in the PS4.

I can just picture all the engineers sitting round a big conference table, and in walks Don Mattrick.

They all just sigh and ask 'what now'.

Seriously though, the entire foundations of the new xbox are crumbling. It was designed around all the stuff that people are asking be removed. The DRM was a win, and I do not want a kinect, but an SKU without one when the system has been built from the ground up to use it - including a good portion of memory - is complete madness.

This simply cannot happen, because if it does, everything they have spent months - years working on, has to be scrapped overnight. It is already past crazy what has been dumped, I certainly wouldn't hold out for a kinect free unit.

this if true is going to slowly revert back to people saying ps4 is more powerful and hence it's going to be like this generation where the ps3 is more powerful but almost everyone bought an xbox

lol some interesting stuff going on

It doesn't tackle the biggest "problem" people have with Kinect - that they're paying for one whether they want it or not - but it does at least address some privacy concerns, which at least helps. Yes, MS said you could disable it entirely but unsurprisingly the same people who would be concerned about it from a privacy POV were asking, reasonably, why you have to have it plugged in if you could disable it. So this helps. And at least devs still know everyone will have one kicking around so they can continue to pretend they're just about to figure out a brilliant new use for it that will change everything.

And yeah, after the DRM stunning reversal I totally believe this news. Last week I'd have been like fuck you that's insane MS is not doing that, but this week I'm ready for MS to announce The Last of Us 2 as a launch game. Nothing is off the board anymore.

GAF -

Microsoft put all this DRM shite in their console - "fuck you Microsoft, this is awful"

Microsoft cave in and take out all the DRM shite - "fuck you Microsoft, this is awful

I don't even need to wait on that. Unless developers are functionality retarded, all multiplatform games should be better on PS4. PS4 is significantly more powerful than Xbox One, and Xbox 360 was pretty much even on balance with the PS3 (maybe PS3 slightly better, but negated by much more difficult development environment). Not only that, PS4 is extremely easy to develop for and Sony is provided unparalleled level of system support, and pretty much every developer from indies up to the big boys say the environment is like night and day.

So unless there is just no effort at all into a PS4 multiplatform game, it is going to have the best version of everything next-gen.

If all you care about are graphics, then sure Xbox One < PS4 < PC. But better graphics don't automatically make a better game.

That's where theoretically Kinect comes in (as well as Smartglass). There'll be a sufficiently large Kinect install base to make use of the device. If a game makes good use of these platform features, then it could very well turn out better than a slightly nicer looking PS4 version.

Nothing on IGN, Giantbomb, Polygon any twitter hits from anyone, not even Kotaku is biting on this.
I think people are seriously losing their shit without checking the roll here.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
They're scrambling like cockroaches after the light gets flipped on, Jesus. Almost pathetic in a way. I just wonder if they're actually learning how to conduct themselves or if they'll just keep making Sony circa-2005-style mistakes.
