Miyamoto "Wii U development requires twice the amount of human resources than before"

Instead of constantly being a generation behind and relying on gimmicks alone, just get on PS4/XB1 and break yourself into modern development. No more shock or surprise and you open yourself up to a bigger fan base.

LOL!

It doesn't make sense, Nintendo aren't followers, they're innovators. They don't try to run after some hidden fan base that exists only on PS4one, they bring the fanbase to their consoles.

Its not. The real reasons are probably varied and include everything from diverting resources to saving the 3DS to underestimating 3rd party support. But those reasons are complex and difficult to explain to shareholders and the press in a few sentences (at least with how Nintendo prefers to interact with them). But blaming HD development is simple, to the point, and sorta a "get out of jail" free card since everyone else has already legitimized the problem. I'm sure HD development has caused problems but Nintendo is surely exaggerating it as a PR move/excuse.

This.

lol really? Of course it does Miyamoto. I mean come on! Did they really NOT pay attention to what happened this gen and how many developers struggled?

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Pretty much this.

I get the impression Nintendo thought they could continue to make games that were not much more advanced than before, probably explains the Wii games all looking not better than anything GC for the most part. Unfortunately for them I think they've come to realize gamers won't be happy with the occasional good looking Zelda game that they can point too as being great looking. This of course means they need much more people and require a lot of resources time and effort than they really wanted to use.

not surprising considering this is a company that doesn't care what its competitors do! how you learn from something that you ignore?

That Nintendo Web Framework thing is puzzling.

How did they make games before this?

Did they just connect string and paper cups between departments?

Also did Nintendo think HD was a magic button one pushed and it made your completed game HD?

Okay Mario's done, lets push the HD button now!!! Weee!!!

They weren't prepared at all! What have they been doing since the last 2 years of Wii? I know 3DS was released but Nintendo is just too small to support 2 consoles by themselves :-(
Either then need to expand a lot or make only one console next-gen.

Awesome thanks dude...
The Nintendo Web Framework is a development environment based on WebKit technologies, supporting application development on the Wii U system using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS.
Lol well that's not going to make games, Nintendo d00med :O.

You can make games in HTML5 though.

For example, Countre Jour was ported to run in HTML5.

nintendo, why are you still so "small"? why you were so small in the wii era? in the n64 era?... Nintendo has been in the console business since "forever". They had always been profitable, they have a lot of strong ips, all their games are high quality and can sell insane, those games always recover the investment and more so... why not beeing bigger and releasing more games? why still having droughts? i allways thought that being bigger would be an advantage for them and not a problem... but they have never wanted to be as large. It would mean more games for us...

lol I was being obtuse on purpose but I meant the games we're all used to consoles :). Not to belittle games made HTML5, but that's not what you buy a console for unless it's Ouya :lol.
Woah that looks like nice :O.

Nintendo has been fighting this for some time now, its nothing new to them. I have read many articles regarding the Wii and how it was an advantage that it's development was a lot cheaper and quicker due to the fact it is not HD. They certainly knew this way back then... but maybe they hoped that things would get more simplified over time and less complex. The developers probably understand this... but the 'suits' are alarmed by this change.

I think being small is another symptom of their conservative business approach. If they expand too much and have lean years, that would really hurt their bottom line.

Meanwhile, the last two home console Zelda games had game breaking bugs.

Well at least you could count the number of bugs on your fingers. Compared to stuff like the Witcher and Skyrim which are bug infested.

And to be honest I dont recall Twilight Princess on Gamecube having any game breaking bugs.

I don't understand the negativity here. We already knew this. What's more is that they seem to acknowledge the mistake of not being prepared enough, and are working to get out of the situation.

were they so completely ignorant of the rest of the industry that they didn't know this beforehand? As everyone else was struggling, you'd think they'd be taking notes as to how to avoid these issues.

But Twilight Princess on the Wii had a bug that led to the Wii becoming one of the easiest consoles to hack. Smash Bros has a bug like that too.

The simplest answer is that the video game market is only a small, but important subset of the entertainment market. Just look at Disney and Warner Brothers, huge media conglomerates whose Video Game divisions are only a small part of their businesses. They're there to help enforce their IP branding, nothing more.

Only way Nintendo grows quickly is if they would sell themselves to a large company looking to break into the Video Game Industry, and that isn't happening.

First post wins.
Iwata, it may be your style to not care what the competition is doing, but if you had any common sense you'd have realised this shit years ago. Nintendo's ignorance is laughable sometimes.
Nintendo's willful ignorance.

It could happen if they had to put out some sort of game and deadlines were long past. Nintendo is not all powerful.

Nintendo doesn't release a game until its done. It doesn't matter if deadlines are long past. There are one of a very small group of developer's with a policy like this; these include Valve, Id and Blizzard.

Nintendo have even been known to trash a game that's well into full scale production because it's not meeting their standards.

Iwata's Nintendo reminds me on one of the typical one-hit companies, it's like they don't know why they were succesful in the first place and don't have a fucking idea what to do now.
