FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

3.5gb reserved for the OS is a bit ridiculous. X1 is running what? 2-3 OS's? It is only using 3gb. I don't see how they are using that much on one operating system.

Maybe it's because SONY is thinking about bigger things than pleasing basement-dwelling core gamers.
Gaming isn't about playing The Last of Us anymore. Gaming is about ordering pizza through xbox LIVE apps. Gaming is about talking to your mom through skype on a Friday night.
Lol, if that's all gaming is about anymore, stick to a tablet and you'll be fine. No need to even include more than 2 GB of RAM, total.

They're just citing sources. Not confirmed for now. If it is, that's a large amount of memory, but I'm sure they will get the footprint down eventually, maybe even before launch. Right now devs don't even know how to use 5 GB of RAM properly, so this isn't something to be worried about if Sony can be flexible about this. More memory will come when devs are going to need it is my bet.

Again... if the Dark Sorcerer taught us anything, its that 4GB of GDDR should be enough for all but the most insane graphics. 4GB's ran Quantic Dream's beast.

4GB didn't 'run' anything. It merely stored information and passed it over to the gpu/cpu when it needed processing.

This is quite frankly rididuclous. Trim down your bloated OS and assign more of that ram to the games. I get that 5.5GB is still a lot, but 2.5GB for the OS is excessive.

EDIT: I Take it this is not 100% confirmed then?

i remember when i purchased my first sony system. it was after christmas and i had finally gathered enough money with my sibling to plunk down $299.99 (plus tax) at a gamestop. we bought final fantasy vii and final fantasy x. ffx was the most technologically advanced thing i had ever seen. i cried when they cried. i laughed when they laughed. it was a true experience that touched me deeply. there were many more experiences on the ps2 like this that made me the person i am today.

flash forward to ps3. the $599.99 announcement stung, but i knew in my heart of hearts that i would come back to the worlds sony had made so dear. years later in 2009, i purchased one, and only a few months later i experienced the tour de force that was david cage's heavy rain. uncharted 2 and the last of us followed (with beyond still on the way). these were experiences that not only further shaped me as a person, but changed the gaming landscape as we knew it.

just a month ago i reserved a ps4. the promise of 8gb gddr5 meant exciting new worlds, new heights in storytelling, new frontiers to be experienced. now i'm not sure if that will be possible. and i don't know with this betrayal how i could ever trust sony again.

LOL, calm down. Even if this is true, it is still a significant boost over this gen and it will be great.

Sony will never respond to this, to confirm or deny. There's just no incentive to do so. Even if it's absolutely true, no one outside of this forum will understand or care. If it's false then they've just validated shoddy journalism by giving them time of day. Besides, their employees probably get a kick out of reading this crap during lunch breaks.

Runaway bad press isn't a good thing. Sony should have Sucker Punch tell us how much ram Second Son is using and call it a day.

I don't believe this because I saw every Cerny Talk, and at develop he again told developers the system has a ton of ram for games, and the logic behind it was to beat microsoft in every catagory.

Jack Tretton said it too, the goal was to make the best gaming console for the market.

This type of OS bloating is nothing like their philosophy off their system has been suggesting, especially the cerny logic of going for the simple design choice.

Lots of excuses itt for Sony limiting game potential so I can upload nonsense to Ustream. If it is true, it's bad news from any angle.

GAF never disappoints... I have to work today and cannot even follow this thread because it is moving so fast. The Bone supporters cannot type fast enough in their outright glee.

I'm not sure what any of you expected, other than engineering miracles

It's not about what you or I want. It's about what the general population wants.
You and I may think it's stupid to waste power and resources on a pizza hut app that runs in the background of a gaming machine, but god dammit, every non-core gamer (99% of the gamers) wants it.

I'm sure the OS is still relatively small. If this is true it just means they want space to multitask.

I think staying in Friday night to order pizza from the internet is exactly in the basement dwelling core gamer demo.

With 3.5 GB reserved, I'm gonna need some serious topping customization options.

Even if it is true, so what? I never grasped why the 3GB for the OS on Xbox One somehow dtracted from it. And I don't see why a large pool of memory doing the same on the PS4 is bad either.

Yeah I don't know why either, most pc games do not require more the 2-3gb still. Really weird that people are going crazy over this.

512 MB of GDDR5 RAM has better performance than 1 GB of DDR3 RAM on the same model of video card.

It's a no-win situation, really.

If they confirm, then welp. Even if it means nothing, it's seen as a 'loss of an advantage', that will simply reduce the PS4 momentum.

If they deny, they'll have to reveal how much is delegated to system OS. Even if it's just 1GB, this 'weakens' Sony's marketing of the '8GB GDDR5' advantage.

The ps4 still has a better gpu... Which is what actually matters...

Sony can maybe hope to match MS topping selection, but only the magic of Kinect will let you "make" your pizza in real time by making the appropriate gestures to follow along with your constantly updated Order Status. Sure, you can mime tossing a crust in front of your PS4, but no amount of RAM will let it judge your technique.

I think people that have a problem with a next gen console having that much RAM available for GAMES should stick to PC only and create their own gaming rig...... This isn't a problem people

didnt they already state that developers have access to 7gb of RAM, and this article is purely based on documentation of when the ps4 dev kits where originally distributed with only 4 gigs

http://ps4daily.com/2013/04/playstation-4-developers-7-gb-ram/

Anyway gonna wait and see what sonys official statement is

So when the dev kits had 4GB of RAM, devs had access to 4.5-5.5GB of RAM?
