Sony Announces Q1 Results

Their hardware forecast is disappointing - big declines in both console and portable unit sales. Guess that means no significant PS3 or Vita price cuts.

Well maybe a Vita cut in order to generate ANY sales.

It really is time to stop obfuscating Vita sales. They're poor, everybody knows that. Chucking the PSP in there doesn't suddenly bamboozle people into thinking otherwise.

sony did something similar when the ps3 wasn't performing like they wanted initially. they started posting numbers from the production line or something weird. it fucked up direct comparisons for a good while.

I think the PS3 will see a price cut to reach the fiscal year forecast. Or rather a budget model in territories that haven't got one yet.

Sales are down signficantly in the US. And Japan iirc.

Good lord....

Back to reality, do people still believe the other last gen consoles have a shot at 100 million?

Yes why not ? They will be sitting around 85-86 milions at end of this fiscal year and they still haven't even hit any of the magic price points for developing markets.

When they cease production best selling consoles will probably look like this:

PS2>PS3>X360>PS1>Wii

Ah, jeez. They might as well go the whole hog and start reporting Vita numbers that they'd have liked to seen instead then.

"Oh man, ten million sold in a quarter! It's been wild".

What exchange values are they using for this reporting quarter vs the same quarter in the previous fiscal year?

Someone please normalize it against those rates for me.

Compare the amount of PSP's on the market to how much software was sold. Are you really telling me that it was a healthy market?

Fifa is still on the PSP because europe is sonyland.

Software attach rate was healthy for normal handheld. ~4.5 which is similar to the GB and GBA. DS was out of the norm at ~6. 3DS currently has an attach of about ~3.3 for comparison.

Well I think the ps3 probably will, but without japan and a lack of exclusive titles, it seems hard to imagine the 360 doing it unless MS drops it to 99 at some point

Except that the Vita has a higher chance of being more successful than the WiiU

See you at the end of the FY.

They've been losing money all generation. "Wii U R&D" is the excuse Nintendo used.

Actually SCE was profitable a little bit last year.

The fact that they have this kind of loss despite increased software sales means that SCE is doing 'okay' in terms of fundamentals and management.

They're launching a new console that cost them in terms of R&D. Natural...

Nothing stellar, but still alright when accounting R&D of the PS4, so it makes sense. I'm still skeptical if Kaz can fully turn around Sony as a whole, he's betting big on mobile it seems after acquiring Ericsson, and I just don't see their cell phones having a big splash outside of Europe.

Results came in after market closed (per usual) so it doesn't mean much.
I've got no idea what expectations were for Sony though so it'll be interesting to see how the market reacts.

oops my mistake for not knowing that. Yes should be interesting. I think the whole Loeb situation will also play a part

Vita don't has enough games with appeal to increase sales.

Wii U has Nintendo titles.

Vita could very well end up getting games that will blow our minds.
Wii was a fluke old people bought it to try to be more active. Those types of casuals will be fine with Wii Sports pack in forever & never buy another console. You Nintendo folk really over estimate Nintendo's software & seem to under estimate all things Sony especially Vita.

Sony is not scared to make new IP every gen Nintendo is.

I wonder what is going to happen to Sony's stock today.

Probably hold steady, these results are basically on target. The smartphone results could cause a bit of bounce, finally making a profit there will be seen as a decent achievement, plus the shipment figures are pretty good, well ahead of the likes of Nokia, HTC and most of the Chinese OEMs.

You're selling Sony short. It will be tough, but it's far from a 'one market success.'

Sony's establishing itself as a solid 3rd place in many Asian countries in terms of smartphones. They're really leveraging their old Sony heritage brand and pushing Xperia massively.

US is a bit of a problem due to carrier-relations, and even outside of carrier-relations, it's difficult for Sony to compete competitively there, with Google's ridiculously cheap Nexus line.

As for the other markets where Nokia is still king, it's a matter of how much cheaper Sony and Samsung can push the prices lower. Both brands have a lot of strength in those markets, even if not entirely associated with phones.

Is that the attachment worldwide or just in the west?

They're not, but most of their new, 'great' IPs... will be on consoles, not portables.

Sony's IP approach is a bit too 'top-down', contributed by the fact that their AAA-team are all console devs first & foremost.

What they need are IPs that feel more 'at home' on handhelds than they are on consoles. They have very little of those, and even then, none are system sellers.

i think the problem with the vita isn't that there might not be decent software on the machine to at least turn it around in one territory- it's that it seems that the hardware manufacturer doesn't care much about it themselves. they're making tearaway, freedom wars, and an exclusive killzone for it. that's great! there's going to be another gravity rush. even better! but loads more of the library they've provided can be found on other systems. it's like they made this really neat handheld with plenty of good features and called it a day.

aside from the ps3, sony's always been fine with letting third-parties run the show, but with the vita it feels like they don't really care how poorly it does. they gave it a mention at e3, but didn't reveal anything new or exciting for it. i feel that maybe their last chance will be tying it to the ps4, and releasing some games that are similar to ps4 titles (like a portable, but different, knack, not unlike their treatment of the lbp on handhelds). so maybe we'll see some stuff at gamescon and tgs. i think we're running out of chances for sony to show that they have a clear vision for this system though, or that they have any serious plans for continued support themselves.

Net Income ---> $35

Thats what written on the first page.
Drop the fucking attitude and go take a chill pill.

Did they read the top line where it said Sony Corporation (Reported in Millions of U.S. dollars) in bold .
It's the first thing you see and it's on there 2 times .

God this back and forth bickering about vita and wiiu in every thread is starting to become real annoying

Both systems are selling like shit...both systems will have a LOT of hurdles going forward...vita well sony needs to give a bigger fuck about it. Wiiu...few first party titles are not going to magically resurrect it either. Doesn't matter if one of them sell a bit more than the other..it's a laughably useless argument

ps: I am ALL for discussing issues they face individually tho. Leads to a better discussion on what's wrong and what can be done

I don't think its much of a stretch to say 360 and ps3 will outsell the wii before production stops.

That's a given PS3 will be on retail shelves for years to come also Microsoft might not drop the 360 the second XB1 releases like they did to OG Xbox.
Gaffers are quick to rid themselves of current gen the rest of the world isn't.

As impressive as the phenomenon of Wii Hardware sales were it's attach rate absolutely sucks. Both of it's competitors have higher attach rates for a long, long time. After this coming gen Can't wait to play some Nintendo on PS5.

So you definitely have no idea what you are talking about, and if you are going to troll at least use correct grammar. This has gotten wildly off topic anyway.
