Anti-dumping laws? I'm not talking about giving them away, just taking a loss on each unit. It's assumed that PS4 and XboxOne will be profitable on day 1, Amazon could release something and take a $50 loss. Nothing illegal about that, they're offering a new product and trying to compete and get a foothold in the market, this is done all the time.

Is it?

"Asking developers to include controller support, to have an instant library" strongly suggests android doesn't it? I.e adding controller support to touch games.

Or they're talking about controller support on PC games and they're going to integrate their PC Game download service into a hardware solution.

oh mai gaww... Jeff Bezos is invading!!!

He hasn't invaded.

He's already here.

Their Kindle seems like a big thing for them. I have no complaints about their services.

At this point I'm just assuming that whatever this Amazon console thing ends up being it will use the Kindle branding. A STB that appeals to the Kindle audience.

The only way they wouldn't is if they are indeed going at the Xbone and will want a new 'core brand' to do so...., which would be interesting to say the least.

instead of being sensitive and offended, why not address my point?

What a marvelous way to start a reply. "Instead of being offended...., "

I think the Republican party is trying to find a new slogan to entice Latino voters. Would you mind if I submitted that?

Are people comparing this device to an OUYA just on a hardware level or do people think that an Amazon led effort would end up in the same position? If you think it'll follow a similar path as the OUYA you are seriously underestimating Amazon's ability to reach consumers.

If it's Ouya-powered it would be cheap, but run the risk of alienating existing console gamers with terrible graphics. If it's Shield-powered, it's still underpowered, and begins to encroach on tablet price points without the benefit of being a tablet.

X86 hardware makes the most sense for a newcomer. Maybe they're teaming with Valve for the Steambox.

I just think it's silly to extrapolate the market choosing mobile over handhelds to mean that people are so in love with Android that they are willing to buy a dedicated box to sit in front of their tv.

I have a feeling that sooner or later Samsung might jump into the gaming STB/console business with such a partnership with someone.

A Google/Samsung partnership could really make waves...., in theory.

I question why they would make a console. But.. They have both the resources, power, and money to pull it off if they went full in with this.

Curious to see what happens.

Sounds to me like this is gonna be an Ouya-type deal, what with Amazon asking developers to include controller support in their (mobile) games to have a large library ready at launch.

1. Amazon doesn't care about profits.
2. Amazon uses money they save by not caring about profits by growing marketshare.
3. They grow marketshare by relentlessly doing whatever they think customers want.

If Amazon is targeting "core gamers" then it's not going to be some lame Ouya box because Amazon knows that's not what core gamers want. Remember they have about 15 years of sales data on the gaming industry. They know exactly what gamers of all stripes are interested in.

I gotta admit, the possibility of an Amazon console with real games is kind of exciting.

An Amazon console? Talk about unexpected. If it has games I want and a reasonable price, then I'll certainly be interested. We shall see.

I'm sure it will be Android based just like the Kindle.

I think Amazon was probably blown away by the PS4 and Xbone pre-orders and decided to give a console a shot.

Really, really won't believe this until I see it. A retailer making a game console just sounds too farfetched to be true.
I think it sounds completely true, but short-sighted.

Sample quote: "Look at all dem monies Sony and Microsoft are raking in with gaming consoles - why don't we do the same dag nabbit?"

Unless they achieve some unprecedented high quality with games or come up with their own Mario - this ship will sing faster than this:

That one tweet says that Amazon has been asking developers to integrate controller support for an instant library at launch.

So this has to be Android then right? That is the only platform where you would need to tell developers to include controller support other than iOS (which would never be on a non-apple device).

Seems like they have been trying to hire like crazy for most things not just game dev. I have been contacted by two different recruiters last month about interviewing in Seattle. I'm not sure why not looking for a job and on the other side of the country. I'm not putting too much stock into this rumor meaning a game console.

Keeping my eye on this; I didn't even know they were making a console, and hearing them aim for the "core" market at that.

Right now I wouldn't mind welcoming some new blood into the console space (still hoping Sega pops out a new one....
lol
), 'cuz tbth both the PS4 and XBO leave a bit to be desired.

This is why I like Amazon as a company. They spend their money like crazy. Take chances on shit... it keeps things interesting.

Could be nothing more then an Kindle fire box for tv. With Controller support. They could create gaming Studios to make specfic games for their box. Getting a couple of people from teams of 100's of people does not mean much.

Digital only then with Prime perks? It would be so fun to see a competitive new console that whoops ass, capability-wise, over the current set of next-gen offerings.

Valve's been very quiet as of late with their Steambox....not that it's the best idea to infer something from silence alone, but here you have a game maker who suddenly wants to make a console, and could use some big money. You have an online retail giant with the money who now wants to get in on the business, conveniently enough at around the exact same time.

Wouldn't surprise me if people from both are Skyping each other this very moment.

I'll bet that this is an always online console, they don't have Microsoft's baggage to deal with and Amazon is already seen as an online company.

Amazon will do what Microsoft didn't have the balls to - they have that nice Whispernet tech too.

I hope you mean offer "xbox 360 quality" console games at $15-$30 instead of just being an always online console without any of the benefits of being always online.

If amazon's current and past practices are any indication, it will be even more US-oriented than people complained the Xbox One is. People would be shocked to see just how dramatically different Amazon US is from even CA and UK, which then is dramatically better than the rest. It's a godlike company in the US but it's nothing special anywhere else.

If not, then I welcome another competitor. I'd like to see a bit of a shakeup in the lineup :D

4 companies in the market will not work. One or two people will have to die out before Amazon can be successful.

I think Amazon's business model would work very well in the game industry. Bezos simply does not care about profit margins -- never has -- and Wall Street investors eventually embraced his break-even model. So he'll never have to be go before investors apologizing for poor performance. The company posted poor results a few weeks ago and the stock is still up for the month.
