But Iherre, surely this is a good thing! More GPU resources for the devs...over time...eventually...sometimes in the future. Riiiiiiight?Nice PR article.
Someone who knows please explain this to me. I've compared the GPU in Xbox One which is around 1.3Tflops to a GTX560 which is also around 1.3Tflops. I've been told you can't compare GPU's that way and that somehow, a Tflop from AMD is not as powerful as a Tflop from nVidia.
Why? And if that's the case, what relevance does it have to the GPU's in Xbox One and PS4?
Digital Foundry really feel like a press release forum for Microsoft nowadays.
You make it seem like they just rolled out an update that took 10 percent of GPU away. That's not the case at all. Devs are working with spec they're talking about in this article, and they're saying they will be able to give them more of that back later.
Obviously though, it stands to reason that having more ROPs on call is the preferable scenario, even if they remain largely unused - and that's what PlayStation 4 offers. Microsoft's pitch is that its hardware set-up wouldn't necessarily be able to make use of them even if they were there.
Please don't! I enjoy watching you and the other xbox fans spin things like this into a positive. It's a humorous and refreshing change from the other 90% of these threads which are all negative and focused on separating the BS from these statements. I need variety in my forum reading life.
So 10% more for Xbone makes the PS4 only 40% faster?
Wow 1st, cool news!
Most interesting part of the article for me.
This author is pretty much tarnishing (or has tarnished) any credibility Digital Foundry has had.
I'd feel better if threads about his articles were prefixed by "Richard Leadbetter: ..." instead of Digital Foundry; then you'd know what to expect in it.
Amazingly well constructed MS PR.
The only "lame" thing here is the first thing people think of is "They are doing this to counter the PS4!". Which tells us more about the mindset people come in and look at this info. Feels like more desperation to defend something that doesn't need defending.
So basically they are confirming that the OS and Frontend will run like crap in a couple of years... just like the 360 basically.
Don't give me that crap; I only own one console atm and it's a PS3(PC too) and I have both next gen consoles paid in full so you can take that to someone who cares. I say positive stuff about both companies and give them both my money.
Did you sell your 360 or something?XBL Gamertag:

Incorrect. Even DF themselves changed their headline from 4.5 to 5GB. People need to let this 4.5GB bullshit go. Going by rumors and DF, the dev's ram reserve is anywhere from 5-6GB. Let's try not to spread FUD.
6gb is being used on games in development, thought we'd been through this?

The disc drive broke so Geek Squad warranty refunded me full price.
Stop with the video game version of "I have black friends". Everyone who's followed most of these next gen threads can tell what side you prefer. Being a fan of one doesn't mean you can't have the other. There's nothing even wrong with it but don't try to BS me.
Full? Nice. That should help pay for your next gen purchases.
I thought that was the whole point of the title.I'd change the thread title, tbh. It's only going to confuse some people, as has already happened.
Because he has them both.If the article is fact, and people love reading tech about the new consoles, why is it PR?
Because you said so?
PS4 ram is somewhere between 4.5-5.5GB based on rumors
Given that PS4 has no snap features, theoretically they can allocate most of not all of the GPU to whatever app is currently running, no? Wouldn't that give it an apps processing power advantage as well?
In contrast, since Xbone has the ability to run multiple apps at once with snap, AND a full fledged game all at the same time, which all had to be guaranteed, apps are limited to only using that 10% reserve.
Actually, I thought it was rather confusing. If it's not too much of a bother, could you perhaps link to a post which explains how much RAM the PS4 has available for games?6gb is being used on games in development, thought we'd been through this?
This war on Microsoft is weird. Last time I looked, there's only three companies making consoles.
Is the X1 not a game console? Does it not play all the new games with updated graphics? Does it not attempt to provide new experiences to the user?
The fact that it's weaker than the PS4 means little to me because the companies clearly targeted different strategies, but at the end of the day they both play games, they both have exclusives, they both target gamers.
The vitriol is annoying to read over and over and over.
Being a cynic about games has GOT to suck.
Because it's technically not more performance. It's unlocking the max performance that was already there, that's a key difference. The Xbox didn't grow 10% more GPU power.
Thats not even the point I was making. You are going by the notion that every bump must be a reaction to the PS4 which is the mindset you came in with. You made that assumption, and that shows in the first reply you made. But in reality none of that versus mentality was even needed, why go all defensive for something that wasnt even dragged in the mud.If they had decent hardware in the box to begin with they wouldn't need to bother even bringing this up, which is my point. The reason they are having to bring it up is because they PS4 is so much more powerful and they are being asked about it left and right.
They are basically saying the software will get better over time, they are correct. So will the PS4 and it's operating system. It's a game of catch up they will never win in this generation.
Why should they? [stop talking about tech] I'm buying an Xbox One and I want to know this stuff.

Yeah but I'm pretty sure Sony gave themselves some wiggle room to evolve the OS over ten years. PS4 can have all the GPU advantage it wants, but if the OS is as clunky and basic as the stuff on Smart TVs, people will complain.
If the article is fact, and people love reading tech about the new consoles, why is it PR?
Because you said so?
This should have been the 1st post .
But it will be 10% more usable performance than is available now, yes? So again, how can this possibly be a bad thing? Are we operating under the assumption that the PS4 locks away 0% of its horsepower for UI and services? If so, I would like a link that verifies this please.
So basically they're saying that they might be able to free up more resources in the future by optimizing their OS(s)? How is this any different than what everyone else does over the course of a generation?
