Digital Foundry: Microsoft to unlock more GPU power for Xbox One developers

Xbox one is just 360 part 2 architecture wise isn't it?
I thought that, but no: the 360 had very specific restrictions on what you could do with the eDRAM and a trade off was that certain fillrate-munching operations like alpha blending were much quicker on 360. There are no such advantages with the Xbone architecture, but there are more headaches because of the added flexibility. So there are indeed extra complications/headaches with the Xbone that weren't present in the 360.

In fact I think the argument is that the eSRAM of Xbone isn't even supposed to be used like the eDRAM in the 360. That would be practically like learning a whole new architecture.

You did see the end of that movie, right?

There is a difference between suddenly adding an online paywall and building up a good service and adding it to a new platform. If all of a sudden you had to pay for online mid way through the PS3's life there would have been outrage. Sony had to establish Plus as a great service before making Plus a requirement for online play and I would say they succeeded.

Also I think the utter ridiculousness of having Netflix, Internet Explorer and other apps behind the Gold paywall and not with Plus lessened the potential backlash.

Yeah in my case im willing to pay for online multiplayer only if part of that money will go into the evolution (improvement) of PSN. And of course Sony is doing the right thing by not putting all services behind a paywall.

I feel like Microsoft wastes a lot of their time and efforts trying to convince people the system is powerful. I think most consumers don't give a crap about anything MS has been focused on for the last few months.

People want to hear about revolutionary features and games or low prices, not about frame rates and resolutions. The pissing contest between PC/PS/Xbox results in surprisingly little profit from a shockingly small audience.

The industry is still under threat from Amazon/Apple/Google/Samsung and the biggest thing the big 3 game companies have going for them now is shelf space (the thing they're attempting to move away from).

I'm betting the opposite when all is said and done. I think devs will come to appreciate the various parts that make up the larger whole and how some of the dedicated hardware in the box will end up suiting some some of the things they have in mind. There will be some learning of course, but when they do get a handle on it, I think they will consider the overall setup to be the opposite of a headache.
Why would they appreciate a more complex architecture that still gives worse performance when optimized?

I'm reminded of just how far people will go to try and make the Xbox One look weaker than it truly is, and it's actually quite pitiful. Even GTAV on the Xbox 360 has better water than displayed in that bottom picture, which is more than likely either current gen, or just a scene when the water has calmed. Either way I'm willing to bet it isn't a shot that is properly representative of the Xbox One version of the game, which I'm sure you know, but it works for your particular objectives.

No chance. It looks too technically advanced to be on the 360.
The difference just seemed so stark. Something's off.

I'm not really expecting launch software to showcase the PS4's advantage that much, given the tight deadlines for making launch of both these systems and producing 6 SKUs overall for some of these games.

I don't think this is a great comparison shot. It looks like the ocean is much rougher in the PS4 shot due to a weather change and the different positioning at sea makes it look like the XBO version is missing an island when it actually isn't.
There are areas of calm water in the PS4 shot as well that seem to look more realistic than the supposed XB1 shot (even given the crappy image quality.)

I don't think the lack of island in the scene is what leads to perception of visual disparity.
On the whole the bottom image just looks more artificial, for lack of a better description.

It could just be scene composition though I suppose (time of day etc.)

I disagree, John Connor is clearly the Xbox One in your GIF, not the bike! John freaking leader of the resistance, and overall ass-kicker Connor!

That PS4 truck gets blown up later in that scene, btw.

This is important stuff, man.

Alright, if we are getting all technical on this gif then that is just the xbox symbol. What it shows when you boot up, so John in this situation is the OS and the bike is of course the hardware he is running on. ;) Due to the greater horsepower of the truck, that dirt bike is quickly crushed.

Also, I guess this would make Arnie a Wii U... don't think he is going to be coming to save the day this time. :D No wait, of course!! Arnie is 'The Cloud' and will drive in on his Harley and wreck sh*t up. A follow-up GIF may be required.

I know, I know, I messed up man. I have let all GIF'ers down and subsequently GAF'ers too, for shame. :(

Looking at the ropes, it almost seems like they are running at different resolutions. There's a lot more aliasing in the XB1 version.

That water on the Xbone version looks much inferior.

That can't be real. The difference is much more than I expected.

could never
That's gotta be just a shitty place to pause the video for a shot like that surely? XB1 version can't be that bad?

(if it is confirmed as XB1 and not from the 360)

I don't think that comparison is conclusive. The PS4 shot has a wave that is in the process of forming and will crash against the ship and thus appears more detailed. The Xbone shot is during a calmer moment where the water can be more glassy. Look in the top right and look at the quality of it there where it appears to be a bit shallower (this may be relatively near the shore).

I've been very cricitical of the Xbone and am getting a PS4 at launch but I don't think that post is a fair comparison.

I went back and watched the video... those shots are literally right after one another, but the stills make it worse than it is... I will say the water doesn't appear as good on the second shot, and there appears to be more aliasing.

I don't think they are of the same area though. You can tell a difference though in the video. Not just these shots, but particularly later on. There are parts of AC4 that are beautiful, but others not as much.

It's impossible that second shot is X1. MS created directX, there is no way they would give Sony 50% advantage! or that's what I've been told.

Same here. shitty video and different scenes don't help in painting the picture so to speak.

I dont think any conclusion can be made based on those pics. The lighting is so much different you cant even see detail in the xbone versions boat.

Water seems too different to compare. I'd wait before casting judgement here.

..and Im a future one console ps4 owner.

I'm always late for these 2k posts threads within a day...

So I guess this was already discussed to death, but isn't this news kinda fucking XB1 over either way?

First of all, due to their focus on Kinect they had to even increase the computational power disadvantage to the PS4. Now they will lift this restriction in the future, but this means that Kinect becomes fully optional at that point. So if games want to support it, they have to allocate resources themselves, which means no third party developer will probably want to implement Kinect stuff in any meaningful way. Doesn't this basically downgrade Kinect to the level of the PSEye, just that you still had to buy it via bundle?
