let's stop that considering the hardware crap. Shin'en already stated Wii U can do more than major developers are stating. Is pushing this game to 1080pworth the extra development cost to Nintendo?
That's the question when I was saying they could I meant the hardware is capable but to them the jump from 720p to 1080p wasn't worth the visual upgrade. Just like Shin'en said they had nano assault neo at 1080p but they dropped it to 720p and used the extra power for graphical effects.
Just because the hardware is capable of 1080p, doesn't mean it has the power to do it for every game. Nintendo wanted HD (720p) at a high framerate (60 FPS). They knew they could still do some great graphics and meet that. Going to 1080p they would have had to make cuts somewhere.

Wii U has plenty of oomph to make beautiful games, but do not spit out "it's just development costs stopping it from being 1080p."

And as a note, I am so g-damn excited for this game now. Very happy Wii U owner right now.

Where were these 1080p demanders during the Wii?

Everywhere, because on average the Wii's DS 480p resolution forcibly upscaled to 720p/1080p displays looked fucking terrible.

I assume the people criticizing this game for not being too ambitious missed the part where the Wii U's been selling like shit and needs a surefire homerun exclusive this holiday to help it stand out in a crowded market.

Another Nintendo Wii U game with some spectacular lightning, I love the envelop it gives to the characters.

Looks like a scene from a 1990s version of POVRay. If any of you know what I'm talking about, that's a big compliment. Looks like real time raytracing. Plus I love cats. Preordered.

This title might be just that. I am worried that enough people will not gravitate to the system because of just this game though.

I can't wait for it to come out but I am being realistic as far as it pushing a huge surge of console sales.

This are mostly the same people with raging boners over every other sequel out there, except the ones from Nintendo because "it's milking".

I noticed a lot of media outlets talking about the gap between Galaxy 2 and 3D World like it has been forever. Super Mario Galaxy 2 came out in 2010.

SD.

But otherwise yes - quite a few people suffered not so much from the SD resolution, as much as from the sub-par scaling technology employed by their HDTV sets.

/a former EDTV plasma owner - SD bliss.

Looks like real time ray tracing?

It is just blinn phong shading with the specular term turned up.

So much hyperbole in this thread regarding the graphics. Nintendo discovers programmable shaders and the world goes bonkers.

That shader quality reminds me of the first forays into programmable shading that we saw around doom 3 or Call of Duty II where everything was overly specular and non-energy conserving.

I think he was saying that it looks like raytracing, not implying that it actually is

Or you know, it could be the art direction Mario platformers have been employing for the past 30 years.

For reference of 'nintendo not just discovering programmable shaders' see MK8 footage.

What a joyless life you must lead... so sad.

We could make the exact same case for 60fps Vs 30fps. Would you prefer a Mario game at 1080p/30fps, or 720p/60fps? I personally would take either option, for most games(except for fighters, 60fps or bust!), but I think 60fps platformers and racers are tough to 'trade' in.

I don't really see the need for 60fps in non-competitive games (platformers, adventure games).

Before I played the SMGs, I was skeptical of 60 fps Mario games, but now I can never go back.

Some quick, positive, impressions of the game.

This guy isn't even an Nintendo fanboy, and never played the galaxy games.

Cool video. It really bothers me, though. Guy is basically "I don't like Nintendo games.." then goes on to say "I never played the Galaxy games". Sounds like some people on this forum..those two statements together sound ridiculous to me. You can't say "I don't like ___" and then admit to never playing one of the best that company makes.

Eh. Ugh.

At least he sees the light with this game. That's nice.

Its easy not to like a company if you don't play any of their games. Let alone their best ones.

This game is looking most excellent. The creativity level is off the charts, both in its visual presentation and unique mechanics! This image has me the most excited due to the sheer variety of challenges it depicts:

I look forward to visiting Bowser Land in the near future!

Toad's the fucking best.

I'm going to play as Toad all the time.

:lol

My younger niece has claimed Toad.

My other niece has claimed Peach.

Leaves me with Mario or Luigi.

Yes, because if you haven't played two relatively recent Nintendo games, you are not qualified to have an opinion on the company's software. Which dates back over 20 years.

It's pretty common for people to say "I don't like anything ____ makes" then admit they don't have any idea what said company has done in 10 years.

You can certainly state that kind of opinion. But it will probably make it look like an uninformed opinion.

That's my point. haha, you are agreeing with me, yes? I'm just saying it's silly.

If he hasn't played Galaxy, I'm guessing he has barely (if ever) played the Wii, so yes, he is not qualified. It's been said a hundreds of times already, but it's ridiculous to put a blanket over Nintendo games and pretend they are all the same in the first place. I mean by calling it just "two relatively recent Nintendo games" and then speak for Nintendo's library of 20 years prior, you are basically saying Nintendo's software is too diverse to be judged on two games. That should also lead you to believe it's crazy to say "I don't like Nintendo games".

Wow it looks beautiful

Not a question of if, but when I'm getting a Wii U after seeing all the stuff Nintendo's coming up with. SSB4, MK8, and SM3W are my main incentives, but W101 and Bayonetta 2 both look amazing.

Now I just have to get $300 :c

its becoming sad how much gamers are chasing photorealisim now and days. there is nothing about this game to be disappointed about. I am also sure if nintendo wanted this game could be 1080p but 1080p means a lot less to Nintendo than it does to say Sony. Nintendo is how can we design this game and make it fun for the player first. Sony is how can we sell the player that what we said about the hardware capabilities are correct.

What are you talking about? 1080p doesn't only matter for photorealism. But please, spread the bullshit rhetoric that companies that care more about graphics than Nintendo don't care about gameplay.

To be fair though, there aren't many companies that emphasize gameplay more than Nintendo. I mean you look at the photos and they just scream "FUN!" then on the other side you see photo's of AC4, BF4, etc. and it just doesn't have that same effect.

Why have you failed to mention Monolithsoft's 'X'?

Is it confirmed you can pick any character, or are you again stuck with Mario for single player?.
I believe they mentioned selecting different characters for different playstyles like using Toad for speed runs, Mario for the average player, peach for beginners, etc. I could be wrong.

I have extremely high expectations for every 3D Mario game, yet EAD Tokyo always seem to exceed them... Well, except for maybe Sunshine. Not that it was a bad game, but it wasn't on par with the rest.

EAD Tokyo didn't make Sunshine.
