famousmortimer: Xbox One OS and Xbox Live issues bouncing about as we approach launch

y'all should be ashamed
Him: Alright, the problem stems from the fact that it's both launching on the 22nd, and each team has had to write their system to write their party system to handle party hand-offs from the OS side. So if you change the way the way the system handles matchmaking or parties or voice chat in parties or voice chat in games, you run the risk of breaking every released game's individual API, because you have to account for how each individual game's XBL functionality is written. However, the way it is now is a huge cluster mess of probs.

So, in a weird way, they can't fix it on the OS side. What you could do is you could write an all encompassing XBL-API and hand it to each dev. But then you'd have to make that the standard, the OS side would have to be patched to recognize only api handshakes from the game to the OS with that particular code. Meaning some games would still end up breaking, but it'd be fewer. And it'd be more future proof.

As a dev let me be the first to say WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO CODE IT THAT WAY

XBL is pretty much the only thing that Microsoft had going for them for nextgen, it would be mind boggling if they fucked that up.

If CBOAT ever spills publicly what s/he shared via PM regarding a myriad of other technical issues going on right now...

I'm going right back in that shelter and welding it shut.

Welp. Pack it up folks. Time to set sail for the high seas.

Feeling very secure at the moment with that PS4 preorder.

Are we supposed to know who this guy is? Or do we just take his word as gospel because he referenced something about someone telling him something and someone else kinda agreeing with it?

Uh, he's not wrong.

1. Reddit/Neogaf's involvement means nothing when the person releasing he information is an established person, and that includes posting it here or elsewhere.

2. cboat isn't just some blogger or some blog owner.

3. He's not wrong about consoles launching with issues, but he is ignorantly skirting the issue.

720p is an enthusiast "issue." Broken network functions, particularly party chat, is something that is core to the Xbox experience and something even the most casual CoD player will care about.

The Kuch's take on the matter:

Penned Kuchera ‏@BenKuchera 10m

If the first time you've heard of a blog is due to a "BIG" console story, or the source is NeoGAF or Reddit... yeah. Proceed accordingly.

I don't understand the context. This isn't dodging a bullet, if true it will affect alot of people.

Don't post GIFs for the sake of it.

Interesting. Of course no one actually cares about Smartglass on GAF so it won't be seen as much of an impediment.

People might not care about Smart Glass, but it was a largely publicized feature taking up a good chunk of the press conference. I am working on getting other sources for a few other things, but Famous has told you folks the brunt of what needed to be said.

Last night I heard some awful things about Xbox One, but I kind of wrote it off as hyperbole from one crazy kook, but Famous must be confident with a variety of sources because he's taken the ball, and knocked it out the park.

The best thing to come out of this entire situation, is Dent's twitter meltdown.

With that said, Sony has there own challenges, and journo's are pissed off over a cavalcade of things. There is much skepticism as to if PSN will actually work on day 1.

With all that said, folks this is launch day. Things will improve over time, and not everything will work optimally on day 1. Look at the Wii U, look at the PS3/360, and to some extent look at the Vita. The programmers are burning the midnight oil and working tooth and nail to deliver something come launch.

Can't believe people are defending this and saying this isn't a big deal. Are you fucking kidding me.

Who is "thecrapgamer" on the comments of that site? He references GAF a lot so i figured he posts here. He seems to be doing damage control for MS.

why.. microsoft why? is like you are trying HARD to make me to jump ship 500bucks, 720p, and now this what are you thinking when you are making this console?

This is 100% false. Yes our OS had this problem, but months ago. I am talking E3 months ago even before the DRM. You’re right when you say we “changed the way it worked” and that did cause problems. DRM removal (your fault and a late decision upstairs due to the numbers) pushed us back even further. It wasn’t as easy as a patch, flipping a switch. It was built into the system. The online check went through more than the games. There were features that had to be redone including our sharing system and some other features we did not get to announce that we plan on adding on. Everyone is working their ass off 24/7 until launch. Yes it’s buggy but after you install the 2GB day one update, the UI will work just fine and also expect the console (if connected) to auto update when you’re offline, or in the background at night. This will happen throught the life cycle and the cloud enables us to patch In things remotely. If games were pushed back you’d hear about that. Actually XBO games have gone gold and are running fine. COD Ghost is 900p, RYSE. 900p, DR3 720p, FORZA 1080p, BF4 900p, KI 720p, ZOO TYCOON 1080p, TITANFALL running from 900-1080 (not finalized of course), Halo 1080p (they’ve been working on this for 2 years now and can fully take advantage like Turn10. ) To be truthful I can’t wait until the 22nd because when our system runs fine, you won’t be very popular in the industry. You and your friends at NeoGaf have some sort of anti Microsoft agenda that we get tired of reading. Also, Titanfall is a Microsoft exclusive. Not Xbox. Respawn can leave EA at any time and we can publish it after the first year. Enjoy.

Obviously have to take it with a grain of salt but it's still...interesting.

Well, hopefully this is actually the case. That is quite a patch, but if it does it's job then good deal.

I know one thing, I am glad I am waiting a few months before I buy either system. I'll let others go through the launch woes. I have plenty to play anyway.

From my countless hours of multiplayer on both consoles, Xbox Live is simply more reliable and lower latency overall. PSN has its moments of greatness, but the majority of games played are laggy garbage.

Odd. This doesn't at all match my experience.

I guess I was playing on the other PSN where the store and downloads sucked but online play was quite good.

Xbox Live IS the Xbox's selling point. It is the one universal thing the brand can tip its hat on.

Xbox Live possibly having problems for fucking months is honestly far bigger than the 720p mess, which nobody outside of internet forums is really going to care about.

I'm sure he would've specified single player game, as that would narrow down the window of it working properly significantly.

Instantly false as we know BF4 is 720p on X1.

the response from the dev rumor is potentially bigger news than anything Mort posted on his blog.

Look, I just want good games. I'm picking up my PS4 (which is going to be my 3rd party system this gen) and my XBO on launch day and am going to enjoy playing games on both systems.

Could this be a big deal? Certainly. But I'd really like to know where these magical estimates are coming from. I've been working in the game industry for over 8 years now, and so much shit comes together at the last minute on all sides that it is ridiculous to NOT be taking this with huge, huge grains of salt.

I've worked with people that worked on AC2, and two weeks prior to launch, had no clue how the game was actually going to be ready to go. THIS WAS POST-CERTIFICATION.

If you don't think that a company that was formed on the basis of creating operating systems doesn't have all hands on deck working this out prior to launch, that's just a bit crazy to think. If it does come launch and there's a big mess present, then absolutely be mad then. However, this post is going to come off as "pro-MS" so it's going to be ignored or ripped, when the reality is that my only horse in the race is having as many of either system installed.

This dude is very matter of fact about this...

Its hard to take something seriously that could or could not happen... obviously a concern if its not worked out by launch, but it sounds like the bugs are related to voice chat and not actual playing games

Be fun to see how it all plays out - does seem like GAF is easily whipped into a frenzy over the Xbox One though

You may have noticed that they haven’t exactly been out there showing it off in live environments

That is damning.

Damning indeed. Hell, even their embargo's are later, and the rumours are that what, they're not allowing certain footage etc early on when Sony are? I lose track.

um. ok. You do realize I worked at MSXbox and TeamXbox as a rumor mole-right?

My question still stands...

If this is true, I feel really bad for the people who are going to be crunching to fix this over the next 26 days. Deadline stress is the worst.

My feels:

but yea, it sucks. I'm sure if we could be a fly on the wall at either Sony or Microsoft right now we'd never want to touch these consoles that are coming out from the huge amount of issues that are cropping up and being squashed behind the scenes.

Just wait until the masses get these and the online networks die for the first week. Imagine the Diablo 3 launch x10000

This ship seems like it's sinking faster and faster with every day that goes by. Can't say I feel sorry for them though, especially if they're going to release Xbox One in this state. Fuck releasing during the holidays, delay it and release it when it's ready and get it right.

Of course they have. There's videos online from 2 days ago of public BF4 multiplayer matches from the Xbox Live Tour in England.
