Infinity Ward confirms: CoD Ghost is 720p on Xbox One, 1080p on PS4

I mean what people actually own and will be gaming on, not whats on store shelves today. I remember 720p 50" sets sold like crazy on black friday last year(or was it the year before that?)

It's possible, but I really doubt it. You'll also have to factor in the fact that a significant number of gamers hook their consoles up to PC monitors which are basically all 1080p and above.

I don't recall that. I do recall having to buy a TV at the Navy Exchange 2 years ago in Yokosuka Japan because it was way cheaper than in town due to the Yen rate. Nearly every TV was 1080p 120hz 3D. The others were 1080p 120hz 2D. Zero 720p TV's in their showroom of about 20 models of various sizes.

I'm shocked to see someone who lists "xbox 360" as one of the skills in his linkedin profile along with a "xbox live specialist" certification downplaying the differences. I really am.

No kidding? You should call them out on that via twitter or something. Would be interesting to see what kind of "defense" they would have then.

That's why PSP games look great on the Vita. The PSP screen is 480x272 and the Vita is double the width and double the hight at 960x544. If you play a PSP game on the Vita, each original pixel is a 2x2 block on the Vita, meaning it scales perfectly.

If you strip away 4 pixels of vertical, that resolution also works perfectly with 1080p. Will probably downscale the 1080p games to 540p and leave 2 pixel width top and bottom of black bar or something with remote play?

To be fair isnt 1080p still a minority resolution even when only counting 40"+ HDTVs?
1080p was the standard for LCDs when I bought my TV seven years ago. Chances are that if a person bought a TV within that time it's 1080p. I don't know if that's the majority, but it's certainly a significant percentage, especially in the larger sizes where that would matter.

Someone's in for a surprise. ;)

I have to hand it to you man, your blind faith in the XB1's capabilities despite extreme evidence to the contrary is the type of fanboyism that MS is depending on for the success of their new console.

Edit: Unless you have some actual insider information about Halo 5. In which case, consider my curiosity piqued.

I can see Halo 5 going 1080p 60fps, they certainly have the art to minimise technical shortcomings that could result from it.
Would be hilarious if the game had even weaker real-time effects than Halo 4. The dynamic lights already look like they're from a Playstation 2 game, why not just strip them out altogether? Don't worry that the water doesn't have geometrically animated waves, you'll never notice if there's no water!

I would think visually impressing people would be the least of Halo 5's concerns, though.

You mean like how computer software can automatically put gradient coloring around text to give it a softer appearance?
Sort of, though those algorithms are often a lot "smarter" than cheap real-time video scalers.

Here's an extreme example to see what a common scaling algorithm does when it's told to scale a very raw image by a huge factor.

For now. Seriously, if the Xbox One cannot do KI on 1080p, which is essentially two characters against a mostly static background, they must have made some major concessions to get Forza running at 1080p 60fps.

Forza 5 has no AA, and baked (aka last gen) lighting.

If you watch the videos of it running side by side against Forza 4, you can see it is an incremental update to the 360 games. The track side detail seems to be comparable, with only more bloom, good reflections, and a nice looking high res sky box the stand out differences.

very slick, well done.

in case people are wondering, black ops 2 is 880x720 on 360, dynamic on ps3 (DF recorded as low as 823x624 at worst, while matching the 880x720 of the 360 at best)

they couldn't help themselves

This got me thinking.

Before that, though, I have to admit I've never really read any of their reviews during this gen. So I'm a bit unsure about how biased/unbiased they were.

But here's my question: Did they ever make a big deal out of the small differences between current gen multiplats, especially when the XB360 version was better than the PS3 version? For example, if the XB360 version had better texture qualities, resolution, and/or frame rate?

If they did, then this reply of theirs is highly hypocritical.

Maybe if they keep the linear corridor shooter gameplay with gimped lighting, shadows, and particle effects from Halo 4. I don't see the XB1 powering wide open battlefields with hordes of AI characters, high quality dynamic lighting, and full quality particle effects at 1080p60.

I still daydream about Halo 3's double Scarab battle.

I'm pretty certain Forza 5 has some AA.

actually just read this at gamefaqs of the retail build, apparently there isn't any.

The Detective
People were arguing about Halo 3's sub-HD resolution two years after the 360 launched. That and the "subtle beauty" stuff was what I was referencing.

Bungie at first lied about Halo3's res, they said it was 720P but a guy called Quaz51 (I think it was him) at B3D figured out a way to find the native res of a game (via counting pixels alone diagonal lines).
He used it on Halo3 and found out that it was in fact not 720P, but much lower.
Bungie responded, kind of attacked the guy and started trying to add up the res of thier strange buffer setup to down play the fact they lied.

Basically I'm stuck between getting the game on Xbox One, where most of my friends are going to be playing the game, and getting it on PS4, which will look better.

I'm leaning Xbox One, because I'm not one of those people that gets twitchy just from knowing that there's a version of the game out there that looks better than the one I'm playing. If I was, I would be a PC gamer.

As long as the game looks GOOD, I don't necessarily need it to look THE BEST, at least for now.

When devs start really pushing the hardware, maybe the differences will become great enough that I need to switch over and say 'sorry guys, can't do this anymore' to my buddies.

Yes, that was confirmed ages ago. I think it was DF that said the Vita effectively gets 2x SSAA because of it.

I'm pretty certain Forza 5 has some AA.

Not based on the images and direct feed I've seen. They were all jaggy city.

I could be wrong though.

question...can anyone tell me what games in the current gen saw the single largest resolution and/or framerate increase from title to title?...

i guess games and their sequels...or at least games using the same engine...

im honestly very curious...

Are,you implying something?

Btw, can't get used to you with an avatar, much less a Ryse one.

Just implying the game is going to look amazing, which was already a safe bet. Just look at Halo 4. If people will be searching for negative console wars fodder with that game, I don't suspect they will find it.

Corrinne and the rest of 343 will do absolutely incredible work on that game. Of that there's no doubt in my mind. 60fps, amazing artwork, a technically brilliant game. The motion and performance capture stuff they worked on and used to such amazing result in Halo 4 will no doubt be on a whole other level on the Xbox One, and that alone is reason for excitement. And then the battles. Oh boy, I'm getting too excited too early. It's quite a ways off still, but, yea, I'm really anticipating the hell out of the next Halo. Halo 4 was my favorite campaign in the series by far.

Haha, yea, I'm digging my Ryse avatar. It's the game I'm most excited about for launch, so I thought it made sense as an avatar. :)

Go where your friends are if you value that.

All things being said, the games will, still look fine on Xbox One, and the best exclusives will look good.

No point trying to be a lone wolf unless you're trying to make a a stand, or not going to convince your friends otherwise.

You could ask them why they are getting an Xbone to begin with. Nothing is carrying over aside from friends list, achievements, and whatever gold sub you have remaining.

Pretty surreal seeing people defend 720p on a $500 machine in 2013.

Especially when I will be getting a R9 280X for 300$ and will be able to play anything @ 1080p x 60fps

And this is the start of a 5-7 year cycle.

Think about that for a moment and your mind is further blown.

Thank god Sony is here to save us all from another generation of incredibly limited hardware. The power gap between the PS4 and X1 is much larger then people are willing to admit. And the PS4 is easier to develop for ... and Sony has the best first party teams in the world ... and Sony has all the indie devs making games for em ...

By this time next year it could already be over, and PS4 well on its way to being the next PS2.

question...can anyone tell me what games in the current gen saw the single largest resolution and/or framerate increase from title to title?...

Hmmm .. maybe an HD remake from a previous gen title? Those were basically just resolution increases, and possibly texture size increases.

I believe Shadow of the Colossus was 720p on PS2, and they upped it to 1080p x 60fps and enhanced texture resolution.

As for the exact same game ... maybe Call of Duty 2 to CoD Ghosts?

Your points are all fine but are you willing to pay a premium for a lesser experience graphics wise? How set are your friends on sticking with XBONE?

If somehow (somewhat unlikely) Sony delivers a superior online performance would you still go with the One?

Didn't expect them to confirm this rumor. But I don't think majority of CoD players will even notice. Both Sony and Microsoft will keep putting "output" resolution on the back of the game with mentioning 1080p and might be even 4k when consoles will get updates to allow output 4k through HDMI. I heard so many times this gen from people who only play CoD saying that Xbox version is better because it's 1080p and PS3 version is 720p, even though those are just output resolutions and they would call me fanboy when I told them CoD4 and so on all were 640p on both consoles.

Also I don't see why they couldn't push at least 900p on Xbox, the game don't even look as good as BF4.
