Uncharted (PS4) announced, developed by protozoans and Druckmann's evil karma

The new IP obsessed people are some of the most annoying gamers out there. Even more when it's in the AAA space and a new IP just means another 1st or 3rd person shooter with the same variation of RPG or stealth elements we've seen a thousand times over.

Nobody specified that a new IP should be a shooter.

Press forward for feels gameplay, unreplayable due to half (maybe even more) of the game being things that aren't skill checking you in anyway shape or form (or don't scale at all, like their "puzzles").

UC2 has a much, much, much better balance of combat scenarios and fluff (and the combat scenarios are generally more interesting, and usually have the option for stealth if your into skipping scenarios via stealth). Also UC2 has the fast-forward mode which is handy as well.

Frankly, I haven't cared for the combat in Uncharted since Drake's Fortune. The cinematic qualities are UC3's greatest strength. They allowed for greater immersion into the story and those characters. I get enough "Skill Check" from my other games, I go to Uncharted for a truly immersive experience, and UC3 met that desire in every way. Its not about the gunplay, its about the adventure. Frankly, I look forward to an Uncharted that throws away the guns in favor of even greater narrative. UC3's greatest weakness was the combat arenas, not because the gunplay was lackluster, but because it invariably halted the forward momentum.

No. As far as I'm concerned, Uncharted was the best in the series, followed closely by 3.
Then comes Golden Abyss with Uncharted 2 bringing up the rear.

I'll be curious to see what direction this new game goes in... it could be the first major exclusive I'll actually give a damn about.

What?!?!? No way. Your opinion sucks.

UC2 >= UC3 > UC1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Golden Abyss

In terms of story, setting, and character though, probs:

UC1 = UC2 = UC3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Golden Abyss :D

Yeah, I went there. Sony Bend just paled in comparison.

I'm all for this. I wonder if they're trying to do what Jaffe originally had in mind for the GoW games. Different characters, era, mythology, etc. After the Last of Us, I'd like to see how they'd do a grittier version of an Uncharted game.

If it is a new protagonist, I'll definitely miss Nathan, but a darker Uncharted could be cool as well.

Sequels aren't the problem. Well, I guess they could be, depending on how oversaturated they become in terms of flooding the market with the same game year after year (Call of Duty, etc.)

If a game has good characters/story/gameplay, I really don't see a problem in making a new one for gamers to be able to enjoy the game they loved but in new ways. I have no problem with sequels. Not everything can be a new IP. ND just tried The Last of Us, so of course they'll go back to something proven for a new console launch... Uncharted PS4 has the opportunity to push people, like me, over the edge when they're considering a console purchase.

Besides, there are plenty of new IPs -- they're just not AAA games. AAA developers and publishers are just not willing to take the risk.

Nuh-uh. Your opinion sucks.
Huh, that was productive. :lol

The story and progression of the levels flow better in the first game. It's my favorite game in the series even though the combat arenas, level design, and gameplay are better in 2 and 3. I went into why I think that on page 11 but I see other people have similar thoughts only a few pages back.

I agree.
If I could get a patch for Uncharted that put some of the gameplay/control improvements in there, it would go a long way.
But in terms of story, level design, blending TPS with adventure/exploration/puzzles? It's Uncharted all the way for me. Uncharted 3... I was worried it was going to be like Uncharted 2 (where the focus was on multiplayer during development) -- too much shooting, not enough exploration/adventure/etc. The reuse of the train climbing and the really iffy supernatural twist really put me off. Especially that terrible final boss. But Uncharted 3 was much better... more exploration and puzzles and a sense of story/adventure... the ability to sneak through sections instead of going in guns blazing... it was hard for me not to put Uncharted 3 at the top... but it was a little too over the top for me.

''New IP this, new IP that...'' We just got a new IP from them. I'm more than ready for Naughty Dog melting my brain with a PS4 Uncharted. All I ever hoped for, really.

The new IP people are such cry babies. Naughty Dog said they would not do another Uncharted game out of obligation. If they didn't have their heart set on this they would not have done it. Sony has pretty much given the studio carte blanche to do whatever they want. So I trust this studio immensely. We just got a new IP from them this year. In 2013.

I just want bigger, more open environments.

And am I the only one that much prefered Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to 2 & 3? Yeah probably. :p

Gosh I must have watched the teaser several dozens of times now. And I can't stop speculating on what the title would be.

That's my best guess.

Thanks! Those were the things that I immediately noticed when the I first watched the teaser video.

I think it's nice to have this kind of discussion. Even if it's in the middle of 400 people quoting SniperHunter to say how wrong he is ._.

haha I know what you mean. Typical uncharted thread really. Saw this image on wiki

Too bad because that's what you're going to get whether you wanted it or not. That's why whining about new IPs all of the time is annoying.

And your whining about every single game in every single thread is of course so much less annoying.

When people wish for a new IP it's because they recognise the talent of the developer but would rather see it applied to creating something new and different rather than just another sequel. Especially if there's already been several entries in said series and it doesn't seem like there's much room to alter or build upon the formula.

I'm going to disagree with Shinobi and say it will be at the VGAs/VGXs.

Naughty Dog is up for awards for TLOU so it's the best time to show it off.
Just doesn't seem like something they would do, to reveal it now and show it off again next month.

Makes sense to just reveal it all at once at the VGX in my opinion.

Really fucking boring announcement. Unless they're going to do something meaningful and new with it, I'm not interested in just "another one of those"

I would definitely want more exploration in this one.

Don't get me wrong, I have tons of fun with the shooting and platforming and setpieces.

But I'd love to be able to explore the world more. Make it a really long game with lots of exploring in between the battles.

Sony announced KZ3 and a few other big games before the E3 they were shown off at then used E3 to show of gameplay and full trailers.

"Skill Check?" Hell, people bitch all the time about Uncharted 3 being too hard...

Maybe if it's about Francis Drake, they could do Atlantis some point in the series. Maybe Francis has already been there. I just wanna see gameplay.

Like another 3rd person linear cinematic game? That's what you would get from Naughty Dog after all.

I want to play the Uncharted 3 you did; it sure wasn't the one I got.

Then I don't know what game you played, but it couldn't have been Uncharted 3.

Allow me to point out what you have clearly missed:

Drake and the others would swat flies out of their face as well at hold up their hands to block bright light. Turning involved more natural movements as opposed to the common unnatural character model flip that most games do. Drake would reach out and touch walls (albeit, a little too often). When in brawls or chaces, Drake would use items in the environment (Such as mugs, pans, fish, windows, tables and refrigerator doors) to his advantage if he neared them.

Boss fights were more realistic dynamic brawls as opposed to arena shoot-outs with bullet sponges such as the final battle of Uncharted 2.

And don't even get me started on the desert.

My enjoyment of the series has steadily decreased since 1 but i do still enjoy the story and the multiplayer is always cool so good news i think.

I disagree that Uncharted ever did anything to "advance the medium." It just did everything, literally everything, extremely well.

The series has some of the worst enemy encounters I've ever witnessed. It's one step above the peanut gallery that is COD.

I would die of laughter if the new Uncharted was about Francis. How are they going to push 3rd person cover-based shooter there? It'd be the anti-Uncharted 2. :lol

It doesn't have to be. And I think the TLoU showed that using similar gameplay in a new setting opens up a lot of new possiblities and mechanics. It's just something I personally would prefer to see. Not saying there's anything wrong with Uncharted or people looking forward to playing another sequel.

Most people want a new story, new setting, new characters, new gameplay elements.

We got that in TLOU, and I wouldn't mind if they did that more often, even if its considered just a "shooter".

It's more tiresome when the PS4 game line-up is:

Killzone
Infamous
Metal Gear Solid

and 6 games with releases on a previous gen platform. And of those, the 1st person shooters all feel like the same old shit, different resolution. So with that I fully understand the paranoia of those 'annoying' people come from.

Who is to say they don't take Uncharted in a completely new direction with a new character?

I can't believe people expect Sony to just drop one of their hottest franchises. There will be new ips, just chill out.

I saw the reveal last night on Spike TV's PS4 All Access #GREATNESSAWAITS. I'm super stoked for it. Also the reveal of The Last of Us Left Behind = nerdgasm. It looks like it may be a prequel of some sorts, but regardless it's Uncharted, it's gonna be great, and HOPEFULLY better that UC3 as it was kinda a let down but still good just not as good as UC2 in my opinion. Plus its for PS4. I'll be buying it regardless. Naughty Dog is among if not the best studios out there.

When Naughty Dog made Uncharted, they firmly established themselves as a talented developer (and let's not pretend they were extensively recognised before for things like J&D).

Now apparently if they continue to work on this franchise it's a waste of their talent? Talent of which we wouldn't even be aware, were it not for Uncharted. That seems ludicrous to me.

There are also a lot of people saying nobody wants a new Uncharted, and stating it as fact. I suspect this horribly wrong, and their vocal minority efforts are a misleading barometer.

So the shooter elements will be reduced? If it's set in the 16th century I don't fancy too much Flintlock pistol action.

The desert where you were on rails and pushed the left stick forward ultimately reducing the interactivity of that sequence to its lowest possible level?

Yeah so good.

Also the contextual fight stuff was good visually, but mechanically you were doing the same shit you were doing in every other game, mashing square and occasionally pressing triangle.

And if you call that a boss fight well we better just stop right now.

My last post on this topic. Uncharted 3 never seemed like the end of the series to me. Since then it's felt like one more was coming that will have the crew dealing with much bigger stakes than ever before. Doing this now will get ND going on PS4 with what they know and give them room to do new stuff later on, with a game under their belts and their engine up and running.
