Andrew House: PS4 sold through 2.1 million units worldwide as of 12/1, 700K in EU/AU

This is a fun game, can we play it with titanfall, quantum break, sunset overdrive and halo? They'd fit almost exactly in some of your slots above

I said absolutely nothing of MS.

I don't think their lineup looks particularly great either. The one exception is Titanfall which gets nothing but unqualified praise from all hands-on demos and has a proven mega-blockbuster team behind it as well. Other than that it's a big fat question mark for MS too.

But hey... that's launch years for you... they suck.

List wars are stupid. One fact that won't change is that the Xbox One is 100 dollars more. Sony will dominate Microsoft worldwide. Microsoft may as well hang it up in Europe and Japan.

No doubt they've already done so for Japan.

I wonder what Titanfall will do? That will be an interesting one to watch.

Much as I enjoy Sony's work, you are getting WAY ahead of events.

- Destiny Beta: Destiny is an unknown due to its ambitious nature, and it's a BETA... a demo at best, not a noteworthy system-selling exclusive.

- DriveClub: It's an unknown. Could really go either way in terms of quality, and even given it hits the mark there could be a sales non-event.

- inFamous: The series has yet to hit it out of the park in terms of quality or sales.

- 1886: Complete unknown. A shooter from the makers of God of War and Daxter games on PSP? Technically it's going to great... gameplay-wise, complete unknown.

- Uncharted: Very unlikely.

Sony's upcoming year is not looking that good in terms of software... yet.

i was kind of paying attention till ... uncharted very unlikely ...

I said later that I overstated that one.

Though, looks like you made it until the very end of the post anyway -- so not bad!

agree with the rest tho. unproven properties. Lets see how it shapes up. but new gen new ips are always a good thing imo ... something new to look forward to for the new generation.

EDIT: Althought to be honest about the order im not so much so concerned about the gameplay im sure RAD will do a good job on that but im not fully convinced they can pull off a compelling story. (It can be interesting like a gow thing but story wise i think nd with uncharted and tlou showed it takes a "lot" of writing talent to take videogame tropey stories and make them fun

A lot of speculation... a full-on ~95 Metacritic target game within a year of launch doesn't seem likely to me. Either they'll make a decent one like the first Uncharted, or it's not coming within a year. It's too tight given their likely ambitions.

Though, if anyone can do it, it's ND.

True... but it doesn't need to come from Sony themselves. Besides Sony often has trouble finding massive blockbusters from their first party. Their only one for like a decade was Gran Turismo. They still don't really have a "massive" one besides that. I guess Uncharted is almost there a-la Gears.

So, in 3 years, Naughty Dog can only make one game? Think about that again. Already announced, one of their biggest IPs. That's coming 2014. Same as the first.

And if we're talking 5M plus games, then that's basically GT, God of War, Uncharted and the Last of Us. And there's a bunch that push 1-2m copies, from Infamous to Killzone. The narrative that that they don't have big sellers is simply false.

We know nothing about sunset overdrive so that definitely fits. Halo isn't what it use to be 343 beaten Halo with a stick. Titanfall should do good. Kind of remind me if Brink. That game was overhyped and flopped.

700k sounds underwhelming considering just over 1/3rd of that went to the UK and would explain the German lemmings at Media Market. That said MS isn't doing much on their end either So Sony can take foot off the gas a bit in certain countries so to speak.

On the flip side 1.4 million to North America must mean they did ship quite a bit of stock for Black Friday.

These Asia countries are not going to sell that many, as much as we like it to be :p Probably a few hundred thousand at most, capped at 400K to 500K. At least this is my prediction. The markets for these countries seems to be growing but still smaller than EU's markets.

Ya, much smaller market. But HK is the one to watch, because we don't know how much demand from Mainland China.
250k-350k all together is my guess.

It doesn't matter too much if Sony can't keep a big list of exclusives as long as 3rd parties do their part. If things like FO4, L4D3, etc. hit exclusively next gen the adoption rate will be insane for these consoles especially the PS4. If developers keep at cross gen with their biggest titles adoption will stagnate. They should be fine for a while though as people have been waiting for new consoles for years

Playboiz at gaf do all that sony heavy lifting.
Amen to that, playboiii! Sony could not have done this without us. That is fact.
It's good to see their gamer focused vision and direction pay off. Glad they listened this time around, especially to the developers(dat 8GB GDDR5 unified memory architecture).

How is it underwhelming when it's sold out for months to come already?

Some - many - people wanted Europe to match the US number.

But the only way that would happen is if Sony had left NA dry for two weeks...

700k is - still - a bigger launch than Europe has seen before, AFAIK? It's bigger than the PS3 launch, but the excess over that launch just all went to the UK.

The additional 400K sold in NA seems reasonably good - there's still been demand over the past two weeks despite the record day one. I assume supply is the limiting factor.

Likewise the 700K in Europe could probably be larger given sufficient supply. 250K of that is just the UK, so that's 450K for the other launch countries.

Only 700k for us AND the UK got 250k of those? That's just mean to the rest of Europe, tons of people here are waiting until Jan for preorders.

Btw, calling Amazon.de about the Killzone bundle the customer care dude said that they have a preorder list of 10.000 people . And remember, that the bundle was avaible only twice for a short amount of time. I snatched one from the first offer, I hope they can ship it on the 23rd like they say.

It's a great number no doubt but with 1 million sold day one in the US, and including Black Friday, I feel like it should be higher.

TLoU came out in 2013.

Already announced, one of their biggest IPs. That's coming 2014. Same as the first.

We'll see.

And if we're talking 5M plus games, then that's basically GT, God of War, Uncharted and the Last of Us. And there's a bunch that push 1-2m copies, from Infamous to Killzone. The narrative that that they don't have big sellers is simply false.

GT, yes.

God of War, no. III may have come close to 5M but didn't clear it; neither I nor II did, and that was on PS2, and Ascension will not come close. Plus the story is a dead end, and there's franchise fatigue (same as Gears), so they'll need to do something to spruce it up to 5M+ sales.

Uncharted, yes, it got there.

TLoU, yes, that was a huge one by them.

They also lost MGS as a third-party exclusive big-seller.

I didn't say they don't have big sellers. They have only one massive blockbuster, however, GT, which I already mentioned.

In any case my point was they don't need first-party blockbusters to sell systems. That is not the chief determinant. The chief determinants are mind share (to skew 3rd paty sales) and being the CoD (or equivalent) machine.

Stunned they only sold 700k in the EU, therefore must have only shipped around that.

More stunned that the UK got 250k. They really did want to send message early on didn't they.

PS3 sold 600k in the EU in opening weekend.

1.4 million is North America + Latin America

According to my estimates, USA is around 1.23 million in total.

Seems weird considering that is their biggest territory and the lack of a Japanese launch.

Kudos to Sony indeed. Good for them to see how much the positive buzz of the past months has actually translated into sales for them.

Still, I can't help but feel bummed out that all of these 2.1 million PS4 owners (assuming everyone bought one to use and not to sell them that is) bought a system mostly on the promise of better times/games to come while Nintendo's unsuccesful Wii U launch was partly blamed by the press on a weak launch lineup. In a fair and just world, a fantastic game like Super Mario 3D World would have sold 2.1 million copies (and Wii U's) as well, but alas.

As I said before, even as a happy Playstation (1, 2, 3) owner I can't think of any reason to run out and buy a PS4 so soon after launch. None of the launch titles are enticing me, but it appears others aren't having that same problem. I still wonder what all of these mass market buyers are seeing / feeling that I am not, except perhaps to be able to follow the masses and play the most modern version (not counting PC) of big franchises like CoD and Battlefield.

It all seems to boil down to a vague underbelly feeling of zeitgeist hipness or momentum that makes these movements happen and that make people face the same direction. It especially keeps amazing me how fickle these things appear to be (with Nintendo's problematic Wii to Wii U transition, and Microsoft's problems with policies and their message to customers that allowed Sony to get a head start, being two good examples of how fickle such attention is from the mainstream masses.)

To be clear: I have nothing against Sony - or Microsoft - doing well, but I can't fully hide my feelings of "some of this success should befall on Nintendo as well because of their recent great games" either. In any case it will be fascinating to see how all of this will turn out in the long run and how this will impact game development (especially in Japan).

Probably worth mentioning that GT is a 10m+ game ;)

Halo 4 still outsold every PS3 title including the CODs

They really under stocked Europe here. Demand is huge they still have a massive preorder list to fulfill. Everywhere in Europe is sold out until next year.

Just like at an american presidential election, the focus is really on the 'battleground states', and most resources are put into winning those. In this case, the US and UK are battlegrounds - EU can be taken as a safe win.

Bolded "5M plus" franchises going into this generation? Well I guess everything is possible.

Congrats man, that feeling must have been wonderful! I preordered mine in June but was still anxious on launch day even though I knew I was guaranteed one. The hype was killing me, I couldn't even sleep the night leading up to the 29th.

Thanks!

Ah man...when i was walking out of Gamestop with my PS4 and on my way home i felt like i was on Cloud 9, it was such an intense natural high which i had not felt for many many years. I guess the unexpected nature of how it all unfolded that night was a real roller coaster for my emotions and to come home with a PS4 after all that was pure bliss man. I couldn't believe it! I couldn't even take it out of the box for some hours because i just wanted to look at the PS4 box sitting next to my home theater ..i just wanted to soak up every bit of joy just marveling at the fact i had a PS4 sitting at home in front of me!!

I hope everyone else that desperately wants their PS4 gets one soon! I totally understand the feeling if wanting it and not being able to find one.
