Just to be clear...are the only differences between this and the PC version the Lara model and the better optimization of Tress FX?

Physics on Lara's accessories, low res textures removed, all textures 2k+, higher world geometry in some areas, increase distance to lod, increased draw distance, more foliage and assets added to levels, weather system, subsurface scattering skin, drip texture, rewrites to rendering, and they ripped out the old MP middleware and redid it.

They've also apparently added more physics in the environment, and Lara's equipment(bow, arrows in the quiver, her climbing axe thingo) actually have physics applied so they sway correctly when she moves etc.

edit: beaten.

I hate when people slam consoles because consoles drive game development. The only way we get better games is with better consoles. For example, the Naughty Dog guys were talking about how hard it was to get half decent AI in TLOU because of memory constraints, and how much better the AI could have been if they could have scripted them they way they wanted too. & while ND is a Sony only publisher, I am sure every other multiplat dev faced the same restrictions. So, the only way PC gamers can get better AI is if the consoles are powerful enough to allow for it.

Yeah i know exactly what you are talking about man. It's sad to see a lot of PC gamers so biased and resentful towards the consoles like that. To me it shows a lack of real passion and respect for gaming as a hobby (and as a whole) because if someone truly loves gaming...they will appreciate and love playing great games no matter which platform it happens to be on...may it be handheld mobile gaming devices, consoles or the pc platform.

I was born into gaming on a Atari, C64 ,Amiga 500, Arcades, Sega Genesis, etc I have too many great gaming memories that were spread out on all various gaming platforms. Maybe some of these snotty PC gamers are so biased towards consoles because they have no memories of gaming on them? I don't know...I'll never figure out why some are like this..but don't get me wrong. There are a lot of avid PC gamers out there that love console gaming as well! Like me!:)

Developers have moved their focus to consoles..most of the R&D is being spent there...its the nature of the beast but as long as consoles keep getting AAA games...PC's will see a nice portion of these games come over...again, its a win win for everyone.

If you're referring to the choppiness of pans at low framerates as "judder", gsync doesn't make that go away. Low framerates are still low framerates. A game that's holding about 24fps with gsync isn't going to look any smoother in motion than a locked 24fps film.

What gsync avoids is high-frequency variance, like the stuttering caused by triple-buffering when it fails to meet its target, or 3:2 pulldown when converting films to NTSC video.
Gsync doesn't function under 30fps, but it would help quite a bit if a game could run unlocked between 30 and 60. Which is something I think even the One could manage.

What the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 build have versus PC:
- New Lara model, most details in the face.
- TressFX optimisation assumed.
- Additional details/density to certain scenes (eg: foliage).
- Tweaked lighting engine.
- Subsurface light scattering shader on Lara's skin.
- Hand animated physics for certain objects/props replaced with a physics engine (eg: Lara's equipment moves to her movement via physics, not animation).
- Some reworked textures.
- Handful of other changes.

What we don't know:
- Extent of "Ultra" PC setting implementation (eg: tessellation, SSAO, etc).
- Rendering complexity of similar effects (eg: how many samples are used for SSAO and TressFX).
- Texture differences, if they exist.

No, although that is close. The other biggest standout is the higher polygon count on terrain and character models, although since it has been difficult to discern whether Tessellation is being used in the Def Edition, the added geometry may be negated by the lack of it.

EDIT: NVM, expaned much better by EatChildren and Tyrantll. I knew of the other changes, but the expanded Geometry and polygon count seemed to be the most standout as most other new features in the Def Edition I think are already be in the PC ultra settings.

Agreed, the only new face Lara shot I am happy with so far is the one shown way back in the first few pages of this thread where she is adjusting the dials on the radio tower, it was a profile aspect of her face.

Could file all that under new Lara model....ehh pretty dissapointing...I assume this is being pushed to get some extra funding for TR2 and to gauge interest....Japanese love gauging interest with HD remakes and Definitive editions

Sweet, merciful God. I hope after the dust settles, they realize what a disaster that new face is and do a final redesign (in TR2) based on her concept art... the concept art which everyone agrees is the best Lara proposed to date.

I personally prefer the new face. The one in the PC(and last gen) version looked weird to me now. This one is better at conveying emotions from what I've seen.

There really is quite a few nice touches to Lara's model in the Def Edition. In the shot where she is hiding in the crack she has sweat/water build up on her model in various places, that on top of the more physical looking mud on her in the tree shot that someone also pointed out earlier. Of course there are draw backs like some lower res textures, such as the tree in the close up screen and her hair seems less complex IMO and the strands that I suppose are lit look like they are just thick gray strands of hair.

Ok, here they are. Credit goes to Wonko_C for the initial screen grabs from the Definitive Edition streaming video. The following are my own shots from PC TR at all settings maxed at 1080p except AA is left at FXAA for IQ parity with the Definitive Edition because I am sure we can safely assume it will not have SSAA. Unfortunately the shot where Lara is hiding from Dimitri has heavy DOF effect with the highest PC settings so it is kind of a bad comparison to the Definitive Edition in regards to seeing details on Lara's face/skin etc compared to the streams shot, but there it is.

The first shots are my PC TR grabs and the second are Wonko_C's Definitive Edition stream video grabs.

EDIT: Just to be clear, Wonko_C said he/she could only run his/her PC at max DX9/10 so I wanted to illustrate the PC version at max DX11 quality compared to his/her Def. Edition screen grabs. Sorry for the confusion of possible copy/paste image posting.

Thanks for taking the time to do the DX11 shots. It also helps me understand the differences between DX9/10 and DX11 for this game.

I'm a he, BTW.

Someone's new avatar.

LOL. I knew that would happen sooner or later.

No problem, seeing your shots made me want to see the differences myself. Thanks for the he/she clarification, just didn't want to assume.

I hate that they redid her face. The old one looked like a young Rhona Mitra, who modeled as Lara in the 90s.

What was wrong with the original face? Looks fine to me. And who looked at a comparison of the two and decided the new one was better? These are important questions

I will say that the PS3 was significantly worse off on multi-plats throughout the generation and not just a little bit. Skyrim was basically unplayable (developer in my opinion but still). Not to mention that there was a bunch of weird shit that the PS3 did that made it an inferior platform (load times, et al). In addition to getting HACKED and having PS+ down for 3 months... on a more expensive platform... et al.

PS+? Or PSN outage in 2011? That lasted 24 days. Not 3 months.

Yeah, that's just a bad shot for the new face. In this particular comparison, the old face looks a lot better. Sometimes they shouldn't change something when it doesn't need to be changed. Also, PC Tress Fx looks way better. The hair in the bottom shot looks ridiculous.

Also, what's with the Xbone'd colors and contrast? Hopefully it won't be like that when I put it on my TV for the definitive edition.
