Uncharted is a relentless parade of set-pieces, but Naughty Dog's new game breaks the action up with moments of surprising serenity

Each and every kill feels like a distinct decision — as opposed to another indiscriminate notch on the belt.

4Gamers (Dutch) - http://ps3.4gamers.be/previews/26145/1/Hands-on-The-Last-of-Us
If this is Naughty Dog's swansong for the PlayStation 3, then they have definitely succeeded.

The truth is that, from what we could try in our hour of gameplay, we found a solid game, funny, intelligent, and full of facets.

IGN - http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/05/17/the-last-of-us-paranoia-and-despair-in-paradise
The Last of Us stunned me. Not in any one aspect, but through its collective polish and crisp attention to the smallest details. And it’s unlike any adventure I’ve embarked upon. It’s not an action game. It’s not survival. It’s not horror. But it is pretty damn special.

Joypad.dk - http://translate.google.dk/translat...mene-artikler/302-preview-the-last-of-us.html
After having played the demo 4-5 times, I am convinced that The Last of Us is an excellent example of an upcoming big game. Atmosphere, people, graphics, sound, control, and the whole thing is the setting for a great gaming experience.

Johnny Cullen - http://johnnycullen.net/2013/05/17/the-last-of-us-naughty-dogs-matureness-continues/
But if Uncharted 2 was the start of Naughty Dog’s journey to telling more mature stories in its games, The Last of Us looks set to be the pinnacle of it so far.

Joystiq - http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/the-last-of-us-bricks-bottles-and-a-few-bullets/
The Last of Us is a crafty, tense experience in which my attempts to attack bandits and disfigured creatures head-on usually resulted in a gruesome death.

Metro - http://metro.co.uk/2013/05/17/the-last-of-us-preview-the-best-till-last-3772177/
But The Last Of Us is a much darker story and goes out of its way to break as many gameplay links as possible with its sister series.

NGB Blog - http://nextgengamingblog.com/blog/the-last-of-us-preview-3/
However, The Last Of Us looks like it’s going to be a step beyond that, and has the potential to be the system’s final true masterpiece.

OPM UK - http://www.officialplaystationmagaz...gs-zombie-road-trip-is-a-walk-and-talk-em-up/
A lot of people are going to be surprised by Naughty Dog’s zombie road movie. Not because of the shockingly pragmatic violence but rather by the amount of in-game story telling. There’s an almost ambient flow of dialogue and discovery as you move through environments.

Pocket-Lint - http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/121...-explored-in-the-hottest-ps3-game-of-the-year
it must be said that the enemies in the preview code always respawn in the same place in the same fashion every time. They are clearly stage managed for dramatic effect, but if that's the case come the final build, it may hamper replay value.

Polygon - http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/17/4339288/the-last-of-us-ps3-e3-preview-naughty-dog
Our hands-on time with The Last of Us' campaign was just as uncomfortable and dread-inducing as the last time we played it. Though it's filled with horrors, there are brilliant touches of humanity — mostly from Ellie, who exhibits real personality in the way she rambles nervously as she and Joel explore desolate towns

Shacknews - http://www.shacknews.com/article/79231/the-last-of-us-preview-its-still-good
As Naughty Dog slowly unravels more of their latest adventure, I'm excited to say that not only does it hold up, it gets even better.

thesixthaxis - http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/05/17/this-is-the-last-of-us/
The Last Of Us’ ‘listen’ mode, an option that systematically destroys all but the last remnants of any tension, is a dumb, pointless addition seemingly added once an arbitrary focus meeting determined that the Infected were too deadly unless they were highlighted with a big glowing white outline.

VG247 - http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/17/the-last-of-us-disappointing-demo-syndrome/
But ultimately, it felt like I was playing a cover shooter with only four bullets.

Videogamer.com - http://www.videogamer.com/ps3/the_l...aughty_dogs_imperfect_goodbye_to_the_ps3.html
Unfortunately, there is a side to it which leads me to believe that a few issues, which have reared their head before, may just do so again.

I can't WAIT for this game!!

So... I pre-ordered the Survival edition of this game at Best Buy, and I've received an e-mail telling me to pick it up by Saturday, May 18th.. o_O

Hot damn, if only it were true.

Edit: Actually, it says it's ready for pick-up, and to pick it up by May 18th.

First negative preview I've found. He seems to have an issue with the controls.

While The Last of Us certainly isn't as archaic as this, it's bizarre that trying to use your inventory is so fiddly. I wouldn't want to put words in Naughty Dog's mouth, but having to press multiple buttons to use something in your inventory does seem to be falling into Capcom territory. Furthermore, rather than work in increasing the tension, it just made me frustrated as I struggled to achieve what I originally set out to do. Could I be the problem? Most certainly, but I still walked away from The Last of Us feeling like it wasn't as comfortable as I had hoped.

This also spilled over into the combat. As much as I enjoy and respect the Uncharted series, I felt the third went off course when it came to gunplay. Nowhere near as satisfying or, seemingly, accurate as its predecessor, it was a blemish on a game that was immensely entertaining. Given that the demo here was rather short, I'd like to think it won't be a problem that casts a cloud over the entire game, but the same criticisms were definitely there; the aiming in particular feeling loose.

Love the idea, hate the silly 'listen' mode.

I know this is a strange, and difficult to answer question but how clever is the AI would you say?

there is some new footage.. but nobody is allowed to make their own footage. My editor didn´t have the time to edit the video yet, and we are not allowed to show the full video, just edited parts.. :ó(
I assume this is for spoilers? That's funny because the GT video has two guys pretty much spoiling some introductory scenes, without showing you much of the footage. Defeats the purpose I think.

the aiming ... hmmm.. there is one part in the demo where your aiming is crucial, but because of Joel´s postition his aim is off.. might be that part he is talking about.. for me the aiming felt good.

You talking bout the part where Joel
opens a door which triggers a trap that makes him hang upside down from a rope while he has to shoot down several of those clickers while Ellie tries to free him?

I took some screenshots of the overworked UI from a german Gameplay-Video Preview.
The footage is 4:30min long and shows two levels of the game the journos could play, whick looks amazing.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Does every encounter "feel" like an encounter or is it Uncharted-style?

Ouch. Looks like we're finally getting a look at some possible negatives for the game.

Let's just say the demo doesn't really give the AI much chance to show itself.

If you knock something over and make a sound, do they come and inspect?

Do they ever run out of ammo or weapons themselves? If so...do they just launch at you even if you are shooting? The non-infected I mean.

What nofi said. The closest thing that really showed it off was the beginning of the Pittsburgh demo with the Hunters. After that (and even beforehand in Lincoln), there's not much of a chance to see what it's made of.

I do think the human AI in the demo was pretty decent. When enemies knew I didn't have any bullets left, they charged my position. Also, enemies tend to pop up behind me when I least expect it. Felt more difficult than Uncharted imho.

^ don't use it? Might be a trophy for that. Otherwise it would help casuals/younger ones quite a bit I bet.

Sounds awesome, and needing to check those corners is great too.

Edit: The aiming feeling loose is probably due to the fact that the targeting reticule doesn't stay in one spot, you've got to time your shots quite well

The dev in the GT interview mentions that you'll actually be able to upgrade Joel's aiming. So that could also explain why it felt off.

Good stuff, but basically I'm a bit disheartened by a couple of details.

How in hell is possible that nobody pushed for ND to lessen the scope of the Listen Mode? It's way too wide as it is (I calculated something like 20mt with no apparent limitations), even without upgrading it. I know it's supposed to be optional, but there's a wide space between "don't use it" and "far too useful" where ND guys could have worked.

Also, even on the hardest setting, on the rope scene you can withstand a seemingly endless series of clinch assaults, and also get the bonus of the aim auto-snapping on the target when breaking free. Isn't that a bit too generous? To me, the difficulty of the QTE should grow with every extra clinch in a few seconds, getting near impossible on the third one. As it is, you're almost encouraged to clinch and spare ammo, if you can bear with the tedious quickmashbutton scene.

=Also, even on the hardest setting, on the rope scene you can withstand a seemingly endless series of clinch assaults

I played through a couple of times on Normal, and as soon as a Clicker hit me in that scene, it was an instant death, didn't even get a QTE.

You don't need to use it though. Just like you don't need to play a game on Easy mode.

I know this is one of those arguments that goes around and around, but I don't think that is really the issue.

The question is, is the game designed around you needing to use it? That is more of the concern. There is a big difference between something there to help (which I would personally use, not enjoying stealth) and something that really needs to be used because of lack of other tools and options.

Played on hardest setting available (last one is not highlighted) and tried on purpouse to get clinched by 3-4 in a row. That's the result.

I wouldn't say that it's needed to progress, I played through the first time without even knowing it was there. It's definitely more of a helping hand than a game breaker.

Are the leaning mechanics from the E3 demo still in the game? If they were, I wouldn't particularly care about "listen" mode.
