Dragon Quest X announced for Windows PCs (Benchmark and Beta signups available now)

Yessss, now I can play this without wasting 300 on a WiiU. This is great. Just localise it SE now that its on PC.

I now have the tough choice in choosing DQ10 or FF14

Hey guys and gals, I have yet to finish up the offline section of the story, but will get around to it later today. Then I'll give Overplay a go, it would be disappointing if accounts were locked upon first access, as I accidentally signed in without the VPN on earlier. Thinking about all those hours down the drain, oy.

Yeah you need to make a new one a Japanese one. It's pretty simple and for address and stuff just get a free one at Tenso.

Can't read it? It says "The door is tightly shut"

I can't read japanese but I should be fine once I get into the actual game and gather up some guides. Megalosaro got me on the right track but I am gonna save and finish it up tomorrow its getting late.

I have no idea what tenso is and my effort level for making a whole new account in a language I don't speak is fairly low.

9 was so much better than 8 it wasn't even funny. It was effectively a DQ Roguelike with the grotto system and that was ~AMAZING~.

I can't decide what's more asinine, the anti-monthly fee kids or the anti-handheld gang.

Well, I sure as hell am going to be more selective about what I play if I have to worry about a monthly fee to do so... though in this case I think DQX will be worth it, and FFXIV:ARR's looking to be to even if DQX seems to be literally DQ Online where FFXIV so far feels more like a "best of" MMO with FF flavoring, taking many of what other MMOs do right (or at least make convenient even if it's more casual) and executing it well.

I'd lean towards the anti-handheld gang being asinine, but I can't deny that it's a pain to get into if you have comfort issues. Not bothering to defend those who just want some super high end experience for everything though.

Why is it asinine to want the next DQ on a console? I think its more asinine to praise an installment of a game just because it added online and multiplayer.

I have played and beaten all the DQ games since the first came out on NES and I found IX to be one of the worst. The grotto system became tedious and repetitive for me after a while into it. The characters and story were kind of bland and empty. And they removed things that were staples in previous games, like casinos and monster collecting, while dumbing down other things like making the medal quest have unlimited medals. Previously, the small medal quest had a finite amount of medals to find so some were missable.

Give another DQ that's like DQ VIII any day. That game was so epic in just about everything.

I thought DQVIII was more of a step backwards than IX was. I hated the personalities of Jessica and Kukule/Angelo. Yangus was alright though. Trode was pretty cool as well. And I thought the town stories of VIII were inferior to IX's.

IX isn't perfect, but it did a lot of cool things.

If I had to pick an order for the DQ games, I'd say:

Dragon Quest VII: It was pretty much the sum of every Dragon Quest to that point. You have an awesome main cast. The characters you meet in the various towns are excellent. The town vignettes themselves are the best in the series. And the whole package is so meaty

Dragon Quest III: It is the Goldfinger of the Dragon Quest series. Yeah, there were games before it, but it was with DQ3 that the series found its voice. So many style, plot and gameplay conventions came from this game.

Dragon Quest IV: This used to be my favorite, but my distaste of the US DS version has pushed it down a little bit. Awesome cast, awesome monster designs. AWESOME FINAL BOSS. Some of Sugiyama's best work was in this title, by the way.

Dragon Quest IX: The main game was too easy, but the post game was insanely addictive. Between my imported Japanese version, and my US version, I've probably logged about 500 hours in this game. It's way more fun with a friend, and I feel US audiences probably missed out on this fact. Still, lack of monster variety brings it down a bit.

Dragon Quest VIII: Yes, this game was beautiful. It's STILL the most beautiful game in the series, nearly ten years later. But besides its beauty, the whole game felt inferior to DQVII, for reasons I've already mentioned. Best world map ever though.

Dragon Quest VI: Interesting plot and gimmick, even if it was done in other games first. Probably my second favorite cast in the series. It's a shame the DS remake was more of a downgrade. VI deserved a better remake then what we got.

Dragon Quest V: Everyone loves this game, and I can see why. It's a very touching story. Probably the most central story-focused game in the series. But for me, I play Dragon Quests for the side characters and town vignettes, and in this regard I found the game lacking. I am also find this game to have some of Sugiyama's worst work, world map theme aside.

Dragon Quest II: We're getting into archaic territory here. Sugiyama really nailed that world map theme in this game. Still, the plot and towns are pretty hollow, compared to later games. Also, Cave to Rhone can go to hell.

Dragon Quest I: Don't get me wrong, I like DQI a lot. It's a classic. But I'd be hard pressed to recommend it to anyone. It's just too old.

As for Handheld vs Console, Single-player vs Multiplayer. I think there is room in the world for both types. I'm more of a handheld gamer, to be honest. I hate feeling locked down like I do when I play consoles. That said, I think I want XI to be a console release, single player. Preferably on Wii U, so I can play it off screen.

How do you make the game play in full screen and change graphics settings? I'm on a 720p laptop and it's playing in window mode. The bottom of the screen is cut off so if there are any options or stuff there I can't see it nor access it. I've tried all the keys on the keyboard. V brings up the usual DQ in game menu (talk, items, spells, etc) and N brings up a popup called "system" but only lists the real world time on it.

Well, I was admittedly thinking more of the broader handheld vs console thing there and not specifically Dragon Quest, basically the difference between PREFERRING games on consoles and outright disregarding handhelds when it's more a production value issue than comfort. I guess similar happens with handheld gamers and mobile though, but a lot of that DOES have to do with a lack of physical buttons and the race to the bottom pricing/freemium design.

Be careful when switching between relays, all you VPNers out there. I just got my account frozen due to suspicious activity. Just had to change my password... But still.

So, managed to log-in with Overplay, as others have pointed out the process is a little tricky. You have to activate the VPN just as the game is booting up, if you activate it before starting the client you get the password reset error.

I suppose it remains to be seen if this is a bug with the client or a lock-out measure. I was a little disappointed that the characters from the Wii version didn't carry over into the PC beta, but I suppose it'd defeat the purpose, as it would give people automatic access to a lot of high-level content.

Just hope that creating a new character on the PC doesn't mess with my Wii dude.

Sounds like it first checks the IP that was registered with the Benchmark and then the Japanese one? Which is why you would have to change it in that short time window. Maybe if the VPN is on at registration it would be a better scenario. But in that case one might have to download the 2GB with the VPN's speed...

From what I've read it's like the U beta, as in you have to create a new character for the early part of the beta but can use your previous ones in the later part. Either way there are quest limitations and level caps, even if you bring a higher level character later they won't level up further.

As opposed to the U beta, your new characters you create for the beta will not carry over to the final release version but will be deleted. That's like the original Wii beta.

Edit: I get just above 800 for 640x480 in standard quality, windowed, and above 1000 if I reduce the quality. Lol, Wii U with 1080p and good frame count (if the server connection speed allows it) is largely superior for me to the windows version on the PC I tried it on. Windows benchmark only slightly beats the Wii version for me.

Thanks for clearing that up Extralite. Really looking forward to September, the game looks SO much better than the Wii version! Hopefully that Slime controller is sold separately also, that looks sweet.

could this mean that SE is finally embracing the master race known as PC!

if so, then awesome!

You mean like they did with FF11, FF14, The Last Remnant, etc etc? PC has been something they'd do for a long time now - only more-so now with the Eidos side of the company offering a Western influence - but I wouldn't take this to mean anything on a wider level. Since this is an MMO, this was almost certainly always the plan for DQ, the same way FF11 launched on PS2 first and then PC later on.

I really do hope to see the company fully embrace PC for things like FF15 and KH3, but nothing's certain with that stuff, more's the pity.

Played for a bit. It feels like basically every other Dragon Quest game made in the last 15 years. Playing with the keyboard sucks though. I hope the real reason they're porting this to PC is so that they'll release PS4 and XB1 versions later this year or next year.

Is there anyway to play on online mode? Playing an MMO game in single player mode blows and the game was clearly designed to be played by masses of people. Every stage is gigantic and your character moves so slow.

It's telling me I can't play online because my account isn't "registered." I'm in Japan and when I log into the account management page it says

Registration Status Not registered

Anyone know how to change this?

Edit: I think that is just referring to the security token. Has anyone gotten online? The offline portion is not all that interesting.

Pretty much this yes. It's DQ9 with online coop instead of local wireless coop.

So the rumor is that it locks your geolocation to your original IP.

Does that mean you can connect once with the VPN, and afterwards just connect as normal?

Doesn't look like it, seems so far the workaround is as described above, start the VPN as the game opens up and you're past the block. It's a little tricky, but manageable.

Uninstalled the beta, re-registered with a new account and a new email address, re-did the benchmark, re-registered as a beta and now re-downloading the client. I think I messed up something when I registered the first time and it didn't flag me as a beta participant or something like that. Anyway, the offline mode is fun for about an hour so I'll see how the online mode is if I can get in.

I tried to download the benchmark but when I click on the link, all I see is this:

I'm guessing I'm missing something here...

Edit: NVM! Thanks Gloam!

I'm getting an error when launching the game now too. The first time I tried it it worked fine. Then I quit the game and now when I launch it I get a gibberish error message. I have Japanese installed fine on my computer but the message is in gibberish.

Getting the same thing, gonna leave it for a bit and see if it'll fix itself. Could be a server side issue.

UPDATE:

Word is that the beta is down at the moment and will continue at a later time.

Those are Japanese times, obviously.

Week end is over, you have to wait for 12 o'clock noon to play again.

There is a difference for week days and the week end. You can play nonstop from Friday to Sunday but only 6 afternoon hours on each of the four first week days.

I may have used 12am incorrectly. If 12am is one hour later than 11pm than it should be 12pm in my post.

Ah, I was going off of the guy's english translation, which he used 12:00 AM to mean noon. It wasn't until just now that I realized it was supposed to be 12:00 PM

yeah, the possibilites are so much more on the pc besides modding and stuff like that

LOL what is with Japan and automated services not being open 24/7? You go to a bank as well but the ATMs are only open from 9-5.

Well, I don't know about the ATMs (it's probably a crime prevention thing) but the Beta not being 24x7 is hardly a new thing.

Is this news an indictment against Nintendo, or more the fact that the first title with major Square involvement led to an MMO which forces players to connect online to progress through the story?

Neither.

No doubt they're looking to expand their audience and a PC version is natural for an MMO. As for the DQX being an MMO, this has been a long time coming. There are interviews from the early 90s where Horii was saying he wanted to make an online game. It's something he's had in his mind for a while

I'd say it's at least an indirect indictment of Nintendo. I mean if sales were high enough on Wii/Wii U then they wouldn't need to bother to port to PC. Actually, I still think the main reason they want to port to PC is so they can port to PS4/XB1 later on. I mean the PC is a very niche thing in Japan and while it is bigger overseas, DQ is relatively niche in places where PC gaming is popular.

Edit: Server is back up. It's saying you need to play offline mode first before online mode. Do you actually have to beat the offline mode or just play it for a few minutes? I got up to the part where you're supposed to get the magic herb in the cave to save the town before I quit. Then I uninstalled the game because I thought the gibberish error message had something to do with my computer's settings.

Edit 2: I guess when you uninstall the game it doesn't delete the saved game. Gotta love the non-uninstall, uninstall. So I guess you have to beat the tutorial? Anyone beat it yet? How much longer is it?

Only trolls will use it as something against Nintendo. This game coming to PC was likely always planned and since it is a MMO having to be online to make progress is not a big deal.
