Were they intended to talk over as the default way of controlling games? I don't think you can prove that. I think they were intended to sell hardware and make money, which they did. Quite a lot of both. Cry about it.
I have to say, I wish they'd concentrated on something a little more interesting than motion controls.
Good post. I hope people read it.
I wanted to single this out because this is why I (and many others) loved ExciteTruck so much. It really felt like the first game to be "arcade perfect," and it was never in an arcade.
Yeah, that term is used for fighting games that are frame-exact to their arcade counterparts. But the other part of the arcade was the wacky crazy active shit you could do. ExciteTruck was that and more. It wouldn't have worked as the same game with an analog stick.
Total agreement, ExciteTruck was completely awesome. I never felt like the motion controls were in the way and it handled really well. One of my favorite racing games this generation.
Can anyone name me a great motion controlled game? Anyone?
That's pretty much it, except for very specific titles like Kororinpa.Pointer controls=good

This is the one motion-heavy Wii game I really enjoyed.
More like "hardcore" gamers who read IGN don't like motion controls. Not surprising!
Love love love the bitter tears over motion controls becoming popular. One of the best things about this gen.

Double Fine Happy Action Theater.
Suck it.
To be serious, I'm not really a fan of motion controls in this state, haven't tried the Playstation Move, but I feel like the Kinect and Wiimote lack precision. I'm kinda interested in seeing how they improve the tech if everything would feel responsive, the games would be great and there would be a combination of tactile stuff and something like Kinect, I am curious to find out what can be done.
Metroid Prime 3. Better control than any other console fps.
I have a feeling people are also grouping pointer to motion control.

The Kororinpa series says you're dead wrong.
Well, if it means nothing. Where are all these surveys in favor of motion control?
The biggest third-party game of the generation controlled better with a Wiimote.
Gotta hold your hand in a certain way to point the damn thing!
I don't either. I think it's tacked on and pretty shitty for most games.
I wouldn't call it a great game - other people have made far better suggestions on that front - but I do have to say that The Godfather was *infinitely* improved with the Wii control scheme. It's what made me wonder what a better base game would have been like on Wii.Can anyone name me a great motion controlled game? Anyone?
What game are we talking about? Was there a good Wii Call of Duty game?
Following the otherwise lackluster The Conduit, the Wii Call of Duty games took some of the biggest leaps in getting pointer aiming from its nascent teething problems in Red Steel to the dual analog-annihilating powerhouse it is now. That isn't empty hyperbole -- Modern Warfare 3 is compatible with the Classic Controller Pro, and despite Treyarch's adding copious quantities of auto-aim to compensate for its shortcomings, it is immediately apparent when taking the game online who the dual analog players are by their slower turning and inability to match the precision and dexterity of those using the Wii Remote.
That isn't to slight people who prefer analogs over the pointer nor that there isn't room for both, but to suggest that once a player is used to its idiosyncrasies, pointer aiming can be devastatingly effective.
That's a piss-poor infographic. Hire better designers, IGN.
Maybe it's just that we're older gamers who've been brought up on controllers, and the next generation of gamers will prefer motion controls? I dislike them TBH, I've given up on playing my Wii, my weary body can't take the old 'Pete Townshend' actions.

Black Ops and MW3 even let remote users play against Classic Controller users. Here's something from Destructoid's review of MW3.

Motion controls are only liked by people who fit either one of three categories,
1) Don't know any better and just enjoy it because it's there. The casual crowd.
2) Extreme Nintendo fanboys who think because the Wii sold well it's good for gaming and will ignore flaws because of fanboyism.
3) Core gamers who like to go against the common view of core gamers. Most core gamers hate iOS games and motion controls, but these gamers ignore all of the problems those bring because it's cool to go against the grain. They typically act in a douchey manner in their posts and have avatars of something incredibly dumb/weird or some dude or chick posing in some kind of suggestive pose. You know who you are.
I wonder if the invention of the computer mouse was ever considered a gimmick in the computing world?
