Jaw Dropping Moments in Gaming

Many.

One that immediately comes to mind is the ending of Assassin's Creed II. A genuine "what the fuck" mind-blowing, shocking moment (in a good way).
If you're referring to the "Who is Desmond?" moment, then I'm right there with you. Absolutely one of my favorite moments in gaming. Top 10 material for sure.

Other great moments:
Silent Hill 2: Watching the video.
Silent Hill Shattered Memories: Learning the truth.
Bioshock Infinite: Being teleported to Rapture. I should have seen it coming but it was such a great moment. I was straight losin' it.
Last of Us II: It might not be much, but once you beat the game, the menu screen changes to show Catalina Island. As someone who's been there, it was really cool getting that last bit of closure.
Last of Us: Like, the whole damn game.
Resident Evil VII: When Mia chainsaws your arm off. It's so beyond what you expect. Especially since it doesn't kill you and you just keep playing out the rest of the level.

And it might sound lame by today's standards, but back in the PS1 era, Medal of Honor. I threw a grenade at an enemy and the guy threw it back at me. I had to just pause the game and take a minute. Gaming would never be the same.

Honestly when I reached Leyndell capital city in ER I was so mesmerized and awed that I thought to myself (this is probably.........the greatest game ever made) honestly to me Elden Ring's world is the best I have ever experienced in a game, it feels similar to what Tolkien achieved with his legendarium but the gamen is not perfect and has problems in other areas like too much repetition on gameplay and too many unbalanced enemies but beyond those things the world is unbeatable to me.

The "FINAL MISSION" in Metal Slug 3.

From the moment you thought you beat the game and then you get kidnapped my jaw was on the floor all the way until the real ending.

Ds3 and Elden Ring. It's not that hard to tell lol and it's only 3 games.
You're writing a post about games that were jaw dropping yet you dont even say what Hames they are. Then you ask to posy my own. It's hard to tell. I have no idea. Why would I know? Common problem on Gaf. Wtf. You have to be a millenial where everything is someone else's fault.

My most recent jaw-dropping moment is with Returnal:

After having "regretted" buying the game because it wasn't clicking with me (I wasn't dying, but felt the game was off because of the speed), I decided to give it a proper run one night around 11:30pm, killed Biome 1 boss, went to Biome 2, killed the Boss of Biome 2 for the first time and reached Biome 3 for the first time and killed the Biome 3 boss first try all in one epic 3 hour run. The whole run and the whole sequence that plays after Biome 3 and everything, I was in total awe. Went to bed afterwards and couldn't sleep.

I have been playing Sea of Thieves on and off with my friends since the beginning and we still sometimes stop everything we are doing and just embrace the beauty of a sunset or just marvel at the waves. For such a cartoony looking game, it sure can be a jawdropper.

The beginning of Half-Life Alyx where there a Strider patrols past/over you.
That game had lots of awesome moments that made me glad I'd picked up a VR headset.

Yeah, VR is full of these amazing moments, even in simpler games than HL: Alyx.

People who still think it's just a screen strapped to your face are really missing out.

another fantastic jaw dropping moment for me... literally going back to minerva and juno's timelines and observe their personal life through weed. that's some serious stuff now

I can't really put a screenshot to it, but shortly after I started playing EverQuest in the moment I left the high elf starting city of Felwithe.

Just seeing the dozens and dozens of people running around starting and completing quests, grouping up, fighting monsters, and just having their own experiences while at the same time sharing the experience with everybody else. It completely changed the way I looked at video games.

Nothing affected me as much as MGS1 with the Psycho Mantis fight and the freq on the back of the cd case, etc.

oh and this

How does one top Psycho Mantis encounter?
That’s got to be the coolest moment in gaming.

People who like that sort of meta-fiction should read the Animal Man comic by Grant Morrison.

1995 = $299 from Sony, still feel the tremors to this day.

Gaming wise, FF3 or FF6 depending on country, when Kefka succeeds in destroying the world. I had to restart several times because I thought I had messed up the game. FF7 that certain persons death.

People want Silent Hill from Kojima. I just hope whatever he does, he puts that level of effort into it. I want more 4th wall breaking.
I'm sure he could figure out something cool to do with the DualSense or in VR. I want him to do something new and unexpected.

The entirety of Shadow of the Colossus

Id’s first appearance in Xenogears

The whole party vs Egil battle and cutscenes in Xenoblade

MGS1 bosses and the cutscenes around them

MGSV prologue

MGR first and last bosses

Every Nier Automata big set piece

Tomb Raider 2013. This controversial sequence where Lara has her hands tied and tries escaping camp and this motherfucker tries to have his way with her. First time I remember yelling at a video game character to stay the hell away from her. Haven’t connected with a game like that since.

First time I felt presence in VR and thus felt like my childhood dream of being inside a game or a simulation was finally a reality.

I think the first biggest reaction was coming out of the sewers in Oblivion for me. First time I was like, whoa now what?

Sure there's plenty of more recent ones, but that one was an initial shock, hadn't played anything like that up until then.

I dont know if there have ever been jaw dropping but very cool moments that made me pause. Actually, too many to name, walking outside for the first time In Fallout 3, rising above the clouds in Bioshock Infinite, etc. but to give the most recent example I played through Industria and after ea chapter you end up in a library that is done in black and white. You simply have to find the door to exit but all the while you here these voices whispering and out of the corner, I saw these flashes? As you continue the game the flashes seems to pick up and slow and then you realize .......... I was like wtf? really went down the lore hole after that, very clunky game but that moment is unforgettable.

This was the first 3D console and the first game I got for it. Before this I only had a SNES, Megadrive etc and older. I did have a PC but I played things like Command & Conquer and Wing Commander. It was just so smooth too compared to what I had played.

When I I realised the intro was actually ingame and I was playing it in the same engine and not just some special 3D cutscene it belw me away.

The menu screen for Resident Evil 7 in VR.

Not even kidding.

It was my first real AAA VR experience, and I spent a good few minutes just looking around the trailer at everything :messenger_tears_of_joy:

RE7 VR is one of mine too. What blew my mind was descending to that basement area. Those slimy walls before go into the water looked amazing in VR. I keep taking off the headset and looking at my TV then inside the headset for comparison. It was absolutely stunning how much presence and depth was lost without VR.

Sonic and Sonic 2 on MegaDrive.
Landstalker and Beyond Oasis on MegaDrive.
Playing Virtua Racing for the first time (MegaDrive). Same with Virtua Fighter and Doom (32X).
Playing CPS2 ports on Saturn after having played fighting games only on 16 bits consoles before.
Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure at Dreamcast launch.
Panzer Dragoon Orta was really impressive as well.
Sonic Unleashed on Xbox 360 was incredible.

Top of my head:

Prey(2017) - shattering the glass
Spiderman - that slick and smooth transition from cutscene to gameplay
Titanfall 1/2 - calling in your titan
Titanfall 2(campaign) - handling the 'device' in that one part, and using the pilot SERE kit near the end of the game
Ghost of Tsushima - the standoff mechanic
Persona 5 - once you reach that certain point in the story and the background music suddenly has the vocals kick in. Also, when you find out something important about Igor
F.E.A.R. - that gun/bullet/shooting porn everywhere
Warcraft 3 - when it first came out.
Fallout 1 - the cutscene that you get when you side with the Master

Trico in Last Guardian, it has most realistic AI and animal animation I ever seen in video game and still no game come close, not even Monster Hunter. (to be fair in MH they have to think about combat and there are more Monster types)
