Just Cause 3 Review Thread

Ya, and those storms were quite a sight to behold, as well.

The way you can see them quickly rolling in from the distance before everything goes to complete chaos never got old.

Mad Max really could have been something if it wasn't so held back by its strict adherence to the generic open-world collectathon formula.

Mad Max badly needs a mod that turns it into some kind of survival game. The map design is amazing but the theme park approach doesn't work well with the setting. I shouldn't be looting a location to fill a checklist, I should be doing it because otherwise I'd die.

Spent an hour on pc version this morning. Ran very nicely except for the server issues. Would take at least a minute to connect and sometimes disconnect mid play. Doesnt help that it tries to reconnect to servers when accessing the pause screen if not connected. Had to wait for it to time out. I hope theres a patch to disable that.

Cars still handle like a turd on a merry go round.

Eh, wish it was more than just a retread.

Man, I might like Mad Max more than this. Who knew!

i doubt it.
Don't get me wrong, i'm in the midst of platinuming Mad Max, but that game's the most repetitive piece of work i've ever seen.

But my girlfriend's gone until Saturday, so i'll be spending my evenings going down my youtube subscription list, listening to podcasts while mindlessly collecting scrap in the post apocalypse.

Cars are fine, the bikes are the worst.

Mad Max needs mission design, a lot more systemic events, and War Rig mounted combat. Survival's only ever been a front to justify and stage all the action scenes in the movies, and should be used the same way in the game. Limiting resources wouldn't make the actual content any better.

Enjoyed it more when I played it tonight (not that I didn't have fun before), but I wish they would've done away with the tedious progression system. I don't want to have to spend two hours liberating provinces just to unlock a mission in the first act.

I can only imagine how long it will take later on, and how many hours I'll sink into liberating bases and towns in order to beat the game.

It's fun, but not when you do it all the time.

Agreed.
Honestly, survival mechanics are often more fun on paper than anything else.

Also a climbing mechanic to jump on rigs during a chase (you know, like what happens for 80% of Fury Road) should have been a must.

What I find really weird is that the game has improved on JC2 in almost every way...yet it's getting lower scores... Steam reviews aren't looking so good either..

Game reviews are relative to their time. Expectations change. If JC2 was released today, its scores would likely be a lot less good it was then.

not only that, but that's exactly what warboys do to you.
Hell, you even have an extra driver with you, who can take over the wheel when you were to board another car.

i feel like this question has been discussed on one of last week's podcasts. Can't remember which. I might just say Bomb or Beastcast.

edit: aye, i think it was last week's beastcast, talking about how Rise of the TR is in most ways better than it's predecessor but isn't getting higher review scores.
edit2: or maybe not. Whichever podcast it was, the game they were talking about was ROTR :p

Been looking forward to it but expected exactly this. A nicer looking JC2 with some new features. I wasn't expecting it to be a GTAV leap forward for the franchise, and so I didn't pre-order it or jump in on day one. I'll pick it up down the road when there's a lull. More than enough open world games of all types for me lately. Still picking my way through TW3, FO4 and MGSV.

That said, I'm positive I'll enjoy the hell out of it for a while when I do pick it up.

Pretty much exactly what I've been thinking. If you want more JC2, this is your game.

So it's really just the fact that JC2 blew you away, and JC3 is more of the same? That's fine and all, and like I said earlier I understand the lowet review scores because of redundancy, but I don't see how that makes it a worse game. If it's JC2 with more options, it will almost certainly be a better game to me unless they've severely fucked up something.

If someone came out with Goldeneye 2 right now and it was exactly the same gameplay as Goldeneye, a true fan might see it as a great game and more of the same. But other gamers will have expected some elements to be more refined or evolved in some way and see the lack of innovation as a knock against the game.

Just Cause 2 came out 5 years ago and now we basically got Just Cause 2 with some included mods on a new island 5 years later. It's still fun and all, but it's a game that lacks any real impact on delivering anything really new. Especially for any gamer who used some similar mods on JC2.

I was expecting more 7'a than 6's. I figured this would be a low 70 metacritic, game just does not look finished.
Edit: Flying does look sweet, so sale material.

Gamereactor Sweden rated it a 9/10 (though they've opted out of Metacritic a while ago).
http://www.gamereactor.se/recensioner/293813/Just+Cause+3/?page=2

They cite fantastic explosions, phenomenal sound, massive freedom, lively environments, awesome game mechanics, varied missions and great physics as standouts while marking the game down for it's poor AI and tepid story.

Their other branches in Germany and Denmark gave it a 9/10 in separate reviews, Finland gave it an 8/10, Norway gave it a 7/10 and the review for Portugal, Spain, UK and Italy gave it a 9/10.

Spent the last hour playing the PS4 version because I preordered that one off PSN awhile back and I don't know know if I'm just easier to please and less demanding than others around here or what but I'm really digging it so far. I will say though that I was one of the ones that had a really good time with the first Just Cause on the 360 too so YMMV. Technically it's been perfectly playable so far. I've yet to run into anything that'd have me throwing my hands up in the air screaming fuck this noise.

So far so good...... Fingers crossed

you have to unlock stuff in main missions which I heard becomes repetitive which is disappointing. guess the main missions are still meh.

Only the first three missions have important things locked behind them (garages, rebel drops, wingsuit and fast travel), after that you could probably ignore the missions completely if you wanted to.

The game is exactly what I wanted and is running fine on Xbox One. Looks nice as well. My only gripe is loading times that are roughly around 30-40 seconds. But that is hardly a deal breaker.

I can only suggest that if you loved JC2 then you should definitely give it a go. You might come away quite surprised, as it is simply a much better game with higher quality production and more of what you love on steroids.

The reviews did their job for this game. I was skeptical. Checked the reviews and they pretty much confirmed my suspicion. This is one I'll definitely avoid until it's dirt cheap. With so many compelling open wold games out this year, I can't justify dropping full price for one this shallow.

I'll probably catch the highlight GIFs on Reddit anyways :)

That is not an unreasonable expectation. Just Cause 3 seems like the exact same thing as Just Cause 2 with little to no improvements or Innovation. At least Mad Max is a new game in a new universe with a pretty compelling feature (car combat). So there's that. I did enjoy that game somewhat.... but if they made a sequel to Mad Max that was basically you doing the exact same stuff with no improvements in the combat, I'd probably skip it.

This was my gripe before the reviews even came out.
It looked like a truly half-assed game. And it seems that's what it is.

Yeah, this is weird as all l'm reading on GAF is 15 minute audiotape loading times and PowerPoint frame rates.

So far it has looked good and run very smoothly. Those gripes just aren't apparent to me.

Maybe the patch sorted it out.

Well fuck
This might be the last game I ever pre order
I may have finally learned my lesson

What the fuck is going on with video games

I can't believe the kind of scores this game is getting considering the technical disaster it is.

Its because JC2 was a cult hit.

The biggest issue I see with this game is that it looks just like JC2.5....a few minor improvements but looks largely like the same game, warts and all.
