Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

Could you notice the difference in the field of view?

I know it's 10 degrees or so wider but in practice it's barely noticeable. Most notable improvement for me is a reduction in screen door effect from the new note. Home button is a nice addition but not exactly a game changer.

I thought the screen door effect was caused by pixel density alone. The Note 7 has the same resolution of any Galaxy Gear VR compatible phone, so I'd assume the SDE is just the same, if not worse, given the fact that the screen is bigger.

Just picked up the newest model of GEar VR before my flight to Europe in a few days.

I used to have the Note 4 Edition, but sold it ages ago. I went with this model over the cheaper S6/S7 model since I'm hoping it will be at least future proof for a little while longer since it has the USB 3.0 adapter.

Comfort compared to the Note 4 one is great so far. It's so much lighter, the straps are easier to work with, and the cushion on the front feels very nice.

Other than that it seems very similar to the old one from what I remember. I think it might feel like I'm looking through a binocular a little more than the old one, but it's not too bad IMO.

There does seem to be a little bit of light that can get in on the sides, at least with my head shape/size. The edges of the face pad curve out a little far and it doesn't make a perfect seal. Thankfully this doesn't seem to be an issue when I'm actually using it, really only if there are lights directly behind me.

I've only been messing with the video app so far since I want to put some movies on it for my plane ride, but I'll post more impressions when I try out some of the games I bought recently.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
I just bought a s7 with a gear vr.... How the hell can you try vr porn? Can I ask that here without punishment or offending anyone?

Find and download 180/360 degree VR movies on a computer. BadoinkVR are the best ones I've seen so far. Then transfer them to your phone into a folder you make on the root directory, called MilkVR. Then go into MilkVR or maybe it's called Samsung Video, they may have changed the name. Anyway it's the video app where you're in a round silver room, not the theater app. Then go to downloaded videos/my device, something like that. They'll be there.

Is the Obama/Yosemite video the first decent quality 3D 360 video on this thing? Really smooth and the visuals about as clear as you're going to get in Gear VR. Really good 3D, running at 60fps. I honestly don't know why most of the VR videos on the Gear VR have been allowed, they're not fit for purpose.

Oh and I believe it's Jaunt that does news features and political debates. Nice 3D effect, just a shame the scaling is TOTALLY off. Reporter in front of you looks 3.5 feet tall.. it's just weird. What's the point of doing VR and then fucking that up.

Is there an easy way way to mirror what a person is seeing in Gear VR to a TV or PC? I read something about chromecast but haven't seen a definitive answer in my google searching. I was hoping it would be as easy as connecting it with a cord but I guess not. Sorry if that has been asked a bunch of times before. I didn't see it in the OP.

Why is this thread so dead? There must be enough non-porn Gear VR gamers on GAF to keep this thread alive, right?

To jumpstart this thread, I want to recommend my fave 5 GEAR VR games that make the hardware worth owning:

Herobound: Spirit Champion
Floor Plan
Minecraft VR
Dreadhalls
Smash Hit
Viral
Anshar Wars 2
End Space
Esper
Never Out

I wish I shared your enthusiasm, but I just don't enjoy games on Gear VR. Porn, on the other hand, is mind blowing. Easily worth the $100 on its own.

I think because the majority of those games are a year old. I think I need positional tracking or Daydream controller to come out to really get back in.

but there are so many gems in the app store that people really haven't tried. There was a period where I was trying everything and reading about everything. Granted, the releases aren't as frequent as I'd like, and the developers seem to be taking more of a wait and see approach than I'd wish, but there are still some incredible experiences to be had on Gear VR.

With a good bluetooth controller, some headphones, and a bit of time, GEAR VR has become one of my favorite portables device.

Is there a good racing game already? That's all I wanted and there's none.

I'm actually fairly surprised at the negativity surrounding Gearvr.

I just got mine a couple weeks ago.

For a 100 bucks plus some coin thrown at a few games I've had experiences I never had before this.

If anything it's more than sold me on VR but maybe that's because I know when I finally get a Vive 2 it will be 10x what this is so I'm not selling it short based on this phone stuff.

I might not even get PSVR til it comes down in price solely bc I have gear.

My wife and I have been having an absolute blast with a bottle of wine and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Great, great multiplayer game which is currently on sale. Recommended.

I have a couple of vives, an oculus dk2 and a gear vr (at work though, I'm not some millionaire). In quite some ways I find the Gear VR to be the nicest experience. Oculus home is much better than steam vr, the gear feels a lot lighter and is untethered. And the best real vr games to me are still Keep Talking.. and Land's End, both of which play fine on Gear VR. I was actually kind of shocked Vive wasn't a wholly better experience.

What's the difference between Daydream and Cardboard, aside from comfortability and build quality? does it have any additional sensors improving accuracy or the like?

Right now I think technically all that we know is that it has better build quality and a motion controller. I assume though that it will also have better sensors like with Gear VR. Though it's not clear to me whether these are in the headset (I would hope so given the price), or are part of Daydream certification for the phones.

I haven't tried it yet, but apparently Microsoft added Xbox One Bluetooth controller support for the Gear VR version of Minecraft, and they plan on supporting the rest of Gear VR games in the future (that have controller support).

It's pretty great, I only wish they'd make the controller work natively with all Android games (oddly, it currently works with some games, but not all).
Maybe once they release support for all of Gear VR someone will be able to extract the necessary stuff and make it work on regular Android games.

Can anyone recommend a controller in the 20 dollar range? I bought a matricom one after decent reviews and the thing never charged so I'm skeptical. I know the steel series one is highly recommended but don't want to drop 50 dollars on one. I've never tried an android controller before.

There aren't any other electronics in the Daydream headset. It has NFC to notice when the phone is placed on the headset. Basically it is just better build quality which seems pretty pricey at $80, but it does include that remote.

Maybe for the phone to be Daydream certified the sensors on the phone have to be low latency enough to handle VR and/or they have better software baked into Android now.

I completely agree with this.
i just bought a PSVR and while it's cool, I still think that the best overall experience is GEAR VR. At least for now. The wire thing with the big brother VR units is the wires. I mean...Wow. the WIRES are insane.

I had the Moga Hero Power for a while and it got the job done: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FB5R9OY/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Goes for a little under $30, but I think I got it on sale for 15-20 somewhere.

The triggers feel kinda bad and the d-pad isn't great, but everything worked. I liked that you could use it as a little external battery for your phone too.

$50 seems to be the minimum price for a really good Bluetooth controller with analog sticks, but this one worked fine for me.

Oh that's slightly disappointing. I saw 'Daydream compatible' being bandied around, but I guess that's some kind of minimum requirements on the IMU then. Or at least I hope they do, because current cardboard is crap.

Had to trade in a couple Note 7's today due to the recall, decided to go for the Edge 7... had enough from the price difference to get the Gear VR for free. I've never experienced VR before and it's every bit as cool as I thought it would be haha ... looking through this thread for recommendations on stuff in a minute. While i'm posting though... is there an actual site for errmm adult VR videos yet? I've googled it and some popped up but don't know if they're legit or not? Haven't tried with the headset on yet... still trying to figure all this out haha

There's a few. General consensus right now seems to be that the industry leaders are Wankz, VRP, and Naughty America. Can't give you any links, though.

Theres a concensus on VR porn?

still, saved me a fortune buying PSVR, just need to set up quake now

More or less. A lot of it is dependent on what you're okay with in terms of scale. Some sites tend to be a little smaller than real life, some sites are a larger than real life (and each site has people that claim that the scaling is dead on). Most people seem to prefer a little smaller to a little larger. Also, I forgot to mention CzechVR in terms of the top regarded VR sites.

My ranking is:

BadoinkVR
VirtualRealPorn (the need of SideloadVR to run their app could be a little annoying for some)
CzechVR

VirtualRealPorn is terrible IMO. And Czech is great on a technical level but the scenes are super boring and the girls are not my style.

1. WankzVR (by a long shot). Gorgeous girls, interesting themes, and 2 updates per week.
2. Naughty America VR (now that they have mostly fixed the scale issues).
3. Real Teens VR
4. Badoink VR
5. VirtualRealPorn
6. Czech VR

How do you access these VR porn sites in the Gear VR? Are they just in the Oculus store?

Last I checked you had to download them to your phone and then load them up in Milk VR or whatever the player is. Site I used was BadoinkVR which is a pay site. I think they might have samples though.

I think you can also stream them through the browser, but not sure how the quality is.
