Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

Finally a response lol. But anyways, that's how I feel as well. I want to get some kind of mobile VR to compliment PSVR or maybe even Rift or Vive if I went with one of those two instead. I'm going to get a new high end phone regardless. I just figure why not take advantage of that and pair it with a headset for some cool wireless VR experiences that I can show anyone without hauling my PS4 or PC with me.

The experience I had on my S5 with a really cheap $20 headset was complete shit compared to PSVR and that's not what I want to show people for the first time. RIght now I keep wondering if I should get a Samsung phone and go with Gear VR or take a wait and see approach with Daydream. That's where my interest in the Axon 7 comes from.

Not sure if they're still running it, but I thought Samsung had a free Gear VR promotion if you buy an S7.

Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier post. I have no way of comparing a Gear VR to something else, as the Gear is the only VR headset I've tried. I'd say there's definitely a screen door effect that can be distracting depending on the capabilities of the device used to capture the content you're viewing.

I don't plan on jumping in with two feet to a Rift or Vive level VR experience until the 2nd generation at least (where they work some of the kinks out), and I don't plan on buying a PS4 just to get a PSVR, so the Gear VR is a perfect stop-gap for me.

I'm in the same camp as you, RE. I'm actually looking at the best ways to trade in my iphone 6plus for Galaxy S7, coming out of pocket as little as possible. I made up my mind about getting the Gear VR. I think it's a platform that will continue to grow. Having tried the Oculus demo, and the Gear VR demo, i'm okay with the downshift in quality. I expect that the few games that are available might have a gem or two, and that's all i can ask for. I have an iPad, so I wont miss the iPhone ecosystem that much. The siren song of the Gear VR is haunting me! lol...

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations on the best way to get the new S7 if you're already an iPhone user, let me know.

If you have an iPhone 6 then personally I would wait it out. I have a strong inkling that the Galaxy s8 will have a dual camera setup. That would mean rudimentary positional tracking and creating VR content. It would be the ultimate VR device.

Not only that, but the rumor is a massive upgrade in screen resolution is coming. I think VR will be a big focus of the S8. I have the Gear VR and an S6. Eagerly anticipating the S8.

I've been doing research on Daydream and Gear VR. The Gear VR experience looks pretty good, but it's hard for me to go against Google. They're going to create a platform for all high end Android devices which should definitely get even more support than Gear VR. Plus it has that motion controller and I'm all for being able to use my hands in VR lol.

In the end if I can have both than that's what I would like. The S7 may not be Daydream ready but the Note 7 might be. The only problem their is that it's going to be a tough pill to swallow paying probably double for Note 7 compared to the Axon 7.

In my opinion:
Gear VR isn't worth it for the games or regular video content. Adult videos though? Mind blowing. That's literally all I use it for now.

I can't find any worthwhile VR porn. It's all weird. But I've never really liked "produced" porn or anything where it's clear that these people punch a clock.

But didn't the s7 just get relased? A jump that big would be another year off, right? Also, one of the appeals of the Gear VR is the price. It's darn near low enough to be an impulse purchase. If there's a V2 of Gear VR, I suspect it won't be cheap.

The S8 will most likely release in March 2017. That's perfect for me since I got my S6 less than a year ago.

I don't see why you would need a new Gear VR for the S8 if the screen size stays the same. The phone's resolution improving has nothing to do with the Gear VR hardware but it will greatly improve the VR experience since the phone is the screen.

Picked up Dreadhalls, End Space, and the bandit game during the Oculus summer sale

Played dreadhalls standing up and i can only last about 10 minutes on that game, yo that is some next level horror game and i love horror game. Gonna balls up and try again tonight.

End Space was a lot of fun, i think its the best space shooter games in Gear VR right now. Enjoyed it a lot more than Anshwar wars/ Eve Gun Jack.

The bandit game was a lot of fun too, and for 99 cents, its a no brainer.

Is anyone else here having issues with the S7 Edge and Gear VR games being choppy at times? Gunjack works fine till I get a power up, then it becomes ultra choppy. A couple other games have been choppy at times, and even Netflix was briefly choppy.

Sounds like the phone might be overheating causing the GPU and CPU to run at a lower frequency.

dove all the way into VR this weekend. i was getting bored of my iPHONE anyway, so after extensive research, went to Best Buy, got the S7, $150.00 credit towards an open box Gear VR, and went to town.

But before that, I tried the PSVR demo in the same best buy.

First off, this is my 3rd time trying the Gear VR, and I still like the system. Having tried PSVR - which is great (I played the shark ocean game), I've come to the conclusion that the GEAR VR is a fine experience, and that PSVR will definitely be my 'big boy' setup, while the GEAR VR is what i'll probably use the most because of it's portability and price of the apps.

Getting it right out of the way, there's always some level of blurriness. It was the same with PSVR, except I got used to it.

The comfort of the PSVR system is outstanding, and It can't be said enough. So much so, in fact, that despite the Rift and Vive being more powerful tech, I lost interest in playing them due to the fact that those headsets don't seem to be made for extended play. An hour with GEAR VR at home, and my eyes were sweating like crazy.

When you can get past all of that, though, and resigned yourself to accepting what GEAR VR is, it's pretty damned impressive. Because of the sale, I just bought a BUNCH of stuff on the oculus store, and I haven't had the chance to go through all of it.

I'll post some impressions before the weekend ends, but I have to post that my first bit of nausea finally hit me playing MINECRAFT. I was most looking forward to that game in VR, and it's the one that i can't stand playing. For some reason, turning is jumpy - apparently for the VR sensitive, and walking immediately gives you that feeling in your gut that something is wrong.

Bummer. I played for 5 minutes in VR mode, and thought about going to the non-VR/Big screen mode, then just walked away from it annoyed.

Anybody know what happened to Oculus cinema from the demo? I loved the movie theaters for watching movies, and I can't seem to find it n the app store...

Overall, though? totally satisfied with this purchase.

Is there a way to project this to a monitor so I can show this to people who aren't technologically literate?

I would like to be able to direct them properly

Anyone else watching this fight right now? First time checking out a live sporting event in VR and it's fucking awesome. The stream has been freezing a bunch which really sucks, but when it works it's great. It's fun to even just watch people that are working and watching the event. Really cool to also see what's going on around the ring during commercial breaks.

Wish I could zoom in a little more though. The scale is off and the boxers looks small from the corner. Also would love to be able to switch which camera I'm watching. They switch around to some different ones between rounds and the one behind the people ring side is really cool.

Pretty great way to watch sports. Would love to watch the Super Bowl with this. Hell, I'd even watch the Pro Bowl.

I know that this is an awesome old post, but how are people watching live sports? Is there an app that I should download?

Is that via Jaunt VR? Not sure but I found Jaunt's stuff disappointing. The scale is totally off, i.e. People look Hobbit sized, like they're on a miniature set. Considering the main thrust of VR is recreating life, to scale, this is really disappointing. As for the general image quality, even the very best quality VR videos I've seen are smeary blurry messes. Truly pretty awful. The lower quality ones simply shouldn't be up, at all, they're awful. Like watching a CGI cut scene clip on a Megadrive.

Fox Sports had an app that shows stuff, as well as CBS for March Madness and PGA Tour.

Spent the entire holiday tinkering with GEAR VR, and this tech continues to blow my mind. Unfortunately, the LEAST of these experiences are all game related.

Most people complaining about current VR talk up the limitations of the tech when the real issue is that the games just aren't great. For example, Herobound: First Strike and Herobound: Gladiators wouldn't feel so mediocre if there was more to the games than strike and collect coins.

I'm starting to wish that Insomniac would turn some of that RIFT love over to the GEAR VR so that we can get fuller gaming experiences on the go.

With a good bluetooth controller, problems controlling traditional gaming experiences disappear.

Anyway, played a LOT of different games and experiences. GEAR is going to be a quiet powerhouse at this price and as/if it expands to more mobile phones...

That was on the NextVR app. Had some impressions typed out on my laptop but my Internet just went down before I could post them. Check out the app though. They should have clips of previous streams to check out.

I enjoyed the NEXTVR app and wished that ESPN had something similar that was more regular. Wimbledon, for example, is on currently and i'd love to see that in this fashion. Same goes for a number of sports. It seems to be as simple as positioning a 360 camera at key spots. While the basketball game was a little too blurry to enjoy on my GEARVR, the boxing match was fantastic.

I want to do a review of all the apps I've tried - and there are MANY.

Castlestorm VR is now available on GearVR and Oculus. Has anyone here tried it? It's $10, say's discounted from $14.99 for launch.

I have Castlestorm on the Playstation platforms, thanks to PS Plus, and only played it a few minutes. It seemed okay but nothing too exciting. But considering the lack of fully-featured, content-heavy games on GearVR, I might be willing to give this a shot. Assuming the VR adds to the experience in a meaningful way.

More than a little disappointed that they didn't focus on porting Zen Pinball to GearVR instead, but considering how shitty Stern Pinball Arcade runs, it's possible that they looked into it but found the physics too taxing on the hardware.

So has anyone figured out how to add friends to the GEAR VR friends list that pops up on the side of the main menu? I've been having a great time with the social app VTIME (and highly recommend it), but now i'm wondering how to find other gaffers to jump online with.
What are people still playing? Some of these experiences are really enjoyable...

Also, is there an app that lets people watch movies together? the theater mode in oculus cinema is awesome. watching with other people would be amazing.

Finally, is there a way to send what's on the oculus screen to something like an iPAD? I was showing my wife how to use the GEAR VR, and it was a pain trying to help her with navigation through memory alone...

Something I found out yesterday is that there's no way to take pictures with the headset on. Screenshots, yes, but if you want to use the pass-through camera and take a picture with it, I couldn't find anything in the Oculus settings, or anything on the store that lets you. Which sucks because it was something I could have really used yesterday (trying to prove a point about scale in a VR video).

Favorite controllers?

SteelSeries XL is a popular one. I got one for Father's Day and have played around with it. Works great! I plan on trying it out with my Flip Chromebook now that it supports Android apps as well, to see if I can get some multi-purpose use out of it.

Do the triggers actually function or do most games only use the shoulder buttons?

I haven't played all the games I have yet, so maybe someone else can comment, but the couple I've played have been shoulders buttons.

Which is, granted, annoying.

Nothing I've played so far uses the triggers. Great controller, though!
OK thanks. Weird because that's the controller that is touted as being the most compatible. I guess it all comes down to the devs. I use an Amazon Fire controller, which I like a lot, but outside of two games (Adventure Time and End Space) none of them use the triggers and using the bumpers just doesn't have the same feel.

Hey all. Tried HTC Vive this week at EVO and I've also had hands on time with PSVR and The Rift. I've gotta say that when all is said and done, I actually feel that the Gear VR is the best overall value for the money. Having lived with this thing for a couple of weeks now, I'm genuinely excited for whatever the new weekly release is, and I hope that Oculus continues to support this thing as much as they've supported the big brother Oculus Rift.

The system could DEFINITELY use a polished experience like Lucky's Tale, and it's heartbreaking that it won't ever be available for the GEAR VR. That said, there are some fantastic experiences that could/and should be tailor made around the mobility of the GEAR. As far as I'm concerned, the system is limited not so much by the hardware, but by the capabilities of the developers.

The iOS platform has proved that there are SO many good games made for mobile, and I'd love to see that mentality permeate GEAR VR as well. Hearthstone? FTL? The Star Trek VR game announced for every other platform BUT the Gear VR?

The resolution isn't superb, but it's solid. With a good bluetooth controller, games are VERY playable. It's a fantastic platform that offers most of what the big brother Oculus does, but at fraction of the cost. With the big VR platforms so focused (foolishly) on First PERSON Shooter experiences, I'd love to see more simulations and more quirky (but well made) experiences hit the platform. Please Don't Touch Anything, Tactera, Darknet, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, have all been wonderful.

Rather those games than an empty playground like Omega Agent, where, while entertaining, would feel a lot more fun if there was a full game therein.

I have it since launch, but just figured out yesterday how I can watch video while laying down in bed (horizontally, watching up towards the ceiling)

You cannot really re-adjust the viewpoint that far with the base UI, but apps like "Gallery" and "Oculus Video (Void Cinema)" allow you to re-center viewpoints to a higher degree.

When I found this out yesterday it was goodbyerealworld.jpg for a couple of hours.... ;)

Have an Oculus and will receive PSVR at launch but the GearVR is still very very good for my daily usage like movies, Twitch, Netflix etc.

Also I can recommend the Steelseries controller, as mentioned a couple posts above.

Posted this list of 'must have' games for the GEAR VR in another thread. Thought I'd post it here for people looking for cool stuff to buy. I left out some of the great social apps available for the system, and stuck with games. VR talk seems to be focused around porn lately, which is fine if that's your thing. Unfortunately, it seems like that's all people see the Gear VR as now, which is a bummer as it's a great machine for things other than porn.

From the thread:

There are a quite a few very good games on the system. I've had it for about a month now and couldn't be happier with my purchase. I use it primarily as a games machine, too. Right off the bat, spend the cash and get the Steelseries XR Bluetooth controller.

VR in general is missing the diversity of solid games, no matter if you have the GEAR, RIFT, or the VIVE. The experiences are very comparable this early in the cycle.

Accepting that, If i had to list the MUST HAVES (that aren't the obvious picks like Gunjack, Anshar Wars 2, or End Space), you can't go wrong with:

1.) Land's End - From the creators of Monument Valley, it's like really simplified version of The Witness in some ways. Pretty to look at. Too short (only 5 Chapters), but what's there is pretty engaging. Got a lot of early buzz which possibly put it into the overhype category, but it's still a good game.

2. Smash VR - This game caught me totally off guard. I heard that it was good but hadn't done much research. Picked it up on and didn't touch it until i had downtime in the airport en route to EVO. Let me tell you...This might be one of my favorite games on the system. It's fast paced, worth replaying, and takes great advantage of the 'gaze based' mechanic of where you look, you interact. The whole game consists of breaking a series of glass obstacles before they hit you as you progress rapidly through a surreal environment.
It's fantastic fun and keeps ramping up the difficulty. Very immersive, super arcadey, and an overall great showcase game.

3. Minecraft VR - Seriously, it's Minecraft. In VR. While you're at it, add Hitman Go to the list. Again, VR might not add a lot to the experience, but it's such a great game that it doesn't really matter.

4. Viral - So it's a physics-based shooter where you launch orbs against a stream of antagonistic sarcastic asshole robots. They also shoot back at you. Sounds simple, but it's a great deal of fun as levels start to play with position, depth, height, and of course, enemy priority. The difficulty ramps up fairly quickly, and you'll find that VIRAL will become one of your defacto VR games for a challenging experience.

5. BombSquad - Here's one of those blink and you'll miss it VR experiences. Best described as bomberman meets Powerstone, it's an arena-based battle game where you position bombs and tripmines, or kick and punch your way to domination by being the last man standing against enemy waves of bombadiers, evil robots, and ninjas. And of course, it's multiplayer, too.

6. Floorplan VR - it's a very simple adventure puzzle game that's big on charm. The entire experience takes place within a single elevator. Each floor has it's own zany story with a new key piece of the overall mystery that you have to solve. On the top floor is an incomplete astro-suit, and you're tasked with finding all of the other pieces on all of the other floors. Finding the components won't be as simple as asking for them, though. Different puzzles have solutions on different floors, and nothing, of course, comes easy. It's a game that I'm dragging out resolving, because I don't want it to end.

I could name at least several more games. I avoided putting any of the big atmosphere games here like Dark Days, Dreadhalls, Annie Amber, Dead Secret, or The Affected, because talking about them would be TLDR. Short version: They're great.

I also excluded 'b-tier' experiences that are totally serviceable, but wouldn't get the time of day if they weren't in VR. That means they're playable but generic, but get shine by virtue of working adequately and simply doing what they're supposed to do. Games like Herobound: First Steps, Omega Agent, Perfect Moon, and Adventure Time fall into this category.

I know that I'm missing a few gems. I still have several games that I own, but haven't truly dug into like Espers 2, Darknet, or Twisted Realms.

There is a LOT to enjoy on the platform. Give it a chance. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

hello I am getting a Samsung S6 today

I had no idea what Gear VR was, does it need a PC to run the games?

or is it just the headset, phone, and controller?

Just the headset and the phone. No wires, no connections into a PC. You don't *need* a controller for just the basics. Even some games are playable without a controller. Unless you've gotten some package I'm unaware of, you'll need to pick up a controller separately if you're going to play some of the more involved games.

Is there anything else like the jurassic one with dinosaurs

I can't find a YouTube app on the occulus store though how would I view the 360tube videos through this?

There's a Samsung Internet app you can use to browse web sites, including YT.

As someone with a Note 5 and a consumer GearVR, does this seem like a worthwhile upgrade? The FOV increase is only 5 degrees, but maybe that's more significant than I realize.

Oh good I was just about to buy the old version this is good :)

It's not. Based on everything I have read from people who have tried it, you probably wouldn't even notice the difference unless you tried each headset on right after another. The new Gear VR really only seems worthwhile for those that don't already own it.

Has anyone tried the VRidge application with the Gear VR? Its pretty awesome to play Vive and Rift games for a fraction of the cost with little lag.

Can't decide whether to pick up the current Gear VR or pre-order the new one.

The old one is pretty cheap on Ebay (probably due to all the giveaways it has had lately) and I can get it for $40.

But the new one will be forward compatible for at least a year or two thanks to the new USB slot compatibility. But that also means I'd have to pay the full $100 for it too, and I still need a controller for it too.

Not quite enough of an upgrade for me to spend $100. I'm glad it is compatible with the older phones, though.

I agree for the moment. Although if they make good use of the USB port on the new Gear, I might be tempted to upgrade. Even the ability to put some movies on a USB stick and plug it into the Gear so I can watch them in the virtual cinema would be useful.

Last I used the Gear VR (about a year ago when I had the Note 4 edition) I thought they added the ability to watch movies from the SD card.

I just got a 128gb card for my new S7 Edge, so I can probably fit a decent number of movies on it.

Being able to plug a USB stick would be pretty cool though.
