The First 33 Minutes of Dead Rising 4

holy shit, are you serious

Yep. The Scythe weapon variants are VERY powerful melee combo weapons, and its among the very first blueprints you get right at the start of the game (after tutorial based intro stuff)

What makes it so good is that it has incredible reach, it spins around you hitting zombies in a very wide arc in all directions and therefore zombies cant even get close to you. It also has excellent durability, so there really isnt any downside to it.

The XP (PP) system is very abusable since the XP multiplier creates ridiculous multiples of XP so using a scythe means you can level up like crazy by simply waiting for a giant mass of zombies, then just going nuts and killing all of them. You'll go up in level so fast, you can unlock the melee boosts like damage and durability. So real early game, you can basically clear an entire massive area of tons of zombies without any fear of damage in return and level up to be super powerful before even moving onto the next chapter

Then the safehouse has a timer that in theory limits how often you can create "free" (ie you dont need any of the base components on you) weapsons - but the timer regenerates so rapidly, I would simply come back and recreate the free combo weapons every time I drove by a safehouse since it will have regenerated by the time I go by the safehouse again.

I only ever used other weapons for fun, just used the scythe variants for melee and the 2 insanely overpowered firearms (late in the game) and the game was a cakewalk and had reached max level way before the game ended. I dont think I had a single difficult fight in the game.

Was expecting some less linear focused vídeo, since when the plot matters in a Dead Rising?

Didn't expect this... don't know if I like or I hate.

Yup, he's right. There's an arbitrary resource system tied to the weapons locker so you can't just spam spawn crafted items on the spot, but said bar fills up again without much downtime.

What's worse is that some collect-a-thon sidequests are close to a weapons locker - including one literally right besides an NPC - so said cases just boil down to selecting shit from a menu.

Ouch, this game looks pretty rough. Hopefully they can polish up a little bit before launch, because right now it seems more Dynasty Warriors than Dead Rising.

Yeah its funny I didnt make the Dynasty Warriors connection at the time I played Dead Rising 3, but thats totally how it feels. You can create a melee combo weapon thats as good as those super powered weapons in the dream sequence shown in the trailer, RIGHT AT THE START OF Dead rising 3. So its not like you become powerful near the end or have a gradual feeling of progression of power, its like that right from the start in DR3 and it looks like DR4 will be similar.

The complete removal of ragdoll is baffling and disappointing. Killing zombies looks so stiff and rigid now without it.

If what they did to Dead Rising happened to Dark Souls, half of neogaf would revolt and protest From.

They really really messed this up, now it just seems like a really boring open world where you kill zombies with "funny" weapons, that aren't really funny.

All of you sayin that this is amazing, I would want this to happen to your fav series and you'd feel what those that are mad at this are feeling. Dead Rising used to have an identity now it looks like GTA V with zombies and "funny weapons"

That's incredibly petty. You can like and enjoy this game but still feel like it's doing longtime fans dirty.

I can not get over that character model. Jesus Christ, Vancouver. Can you really not just throw in the DR1/2 model Franks?!

Also looking at the first ten minutes, they don't have the same Willamette mall layout or store names. Either this is in a different part of the town (two malls!?) or Frank is seriously misremembering the town.

The voice acting in this... wtf.

Not only is the delivery terrible but it seems like it was recorded in a chamber and then randomly added to a game. Great sound editing. lol

Well, it looks good. Better than I was lead to be believe at first.

I may still jump in on this.
They dropped the regen health at least (the E3 demo had regen health, right?)

At least it's a proper reboot, nothing half-assed.
The jokes get cornier with every game, though.

Why do I get the feeling that you aren't actually playing Frank West, but some guy pretending to be Frank West?

If that's what they're going for, then that sounds pretty cool.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Seeing the "Hank East" plaque on his class room for just drove the point home even further.

I don't think I have low standards just different standards then yours, I hate all those things. I also like heatlh that regens instead of finding pack, hate escort missions and ANYTHING that is timed, let me enjoy the game instead of you will play this certain style for the next 2 minutes or you will die.
"DR a beautifully well realized time management simulator" this is a turn off for me.

Maybe the entire premise of the game isn't for you? Its a game where you're dropped into a survival situation and have only your wits and the items around you to try and survive. Of course its going to have elements like trying to find health or possibly running into other people who need to be rescued and considering its an outbreak then yes time would certainly play a factor in that. There are plenty of games where you can be an overpowered god and mow down everything without a care in the world. Dead rising wasn't that at first. So why make it to something it isn't? Thats the whole problem right there. I never understood this mindset of "well i hate this feature so instead of improving on it just get rid of it for me". I hate the ai of the escorts in dead rising 1 but I don't want them removed. They add a sense of immersion to a game where you're trying to survive an outbreak. Yea fix their ai so they're not garbage who require constant baby sitting but don't take them out entirely. Timers didn't need to go. I like when a game paces and directs a player. Running around and killing random crap gets old for me after a while. Sometimes I want a game to tell me a story and dead rising was set up in a way it does just that. And the health regen? Health regen in a survival horror game where gathering health wasn't even an issue. The premise of being prepared and well stock for a zombie outbreak and you completely trivialize that fact.

I mean your point is still apt, I had no clue they rebuilt the mall. But still: Apparently this is in the past, Frank hasn't been there in years, how would he know in that intro sequence?

Also
they rebuilt the town and somehow the military locks it down and shuts off communication for their Pentagon experiment/cover-up?
Kinda doubtful. Especially as DR3 spoilers
everyone apparently can't be Zombism'd anymore.
Guess that's what the intro and DR4 is gonna be focusing on. But meh... this isn't really inspiring confidence in me, and I still haven't gotten around to playing DR3.

Just as a general thing I noticed, does it seem like there's a very slight delay between the swing and when the zombies actually get hit? That and some swings that look like they should connect just miss completely?

It seems to keep cropping up and I can't tell if it's just something only I'm seeing or if it's an actual issue.

Beyond that, really not feeling the voice work so far. I'm not sure what tone they're going for with this. It's all over the place.

Dead Rising 3 was ok but there were some things I hated. The town was so hard to get around in. You had tons of random road blocks all over the place. Made getting across town in a vehicle annoying. Then the last boss stuff was not fun at all. Rest of the game was ok. Overall for me it's still DR1>DR3>DR2/DR2:OTR.

Well, just finished Zombie Genociding in 2. 74,000. Oof.
I still gotta do a few of those kill counts in OTR

Can't imagine how 3 will be, since the lack of timer kinda is whatever to me so far. But everything they've shown in 4 and the ruining of Frank has kinda soured me toward Vancouver and the series as a whole so far. :/

DR1 is still the best with OTR coming close (especially as I didn't like most of 2's characters) behind.

Never was a huge fan of the originals, two was okay, but the gameplay never felt quite there. But DR3 was some of the most fun I've had this generation, pure mindless fun. So I guess Dynasty Rising is more appealing to me than Time Limit the video game. Probably why these new games are so divisive, two different audiences want two completely different games

Ok, so it wasn't just me. Getting around town in DR3 was very difficult with all of the roadblocks and that last section in the game before the final boss I found more annoying than the final boss. Overall, I did enjoy DR3 though. I'm definitely going to try out DR4 even though it looks, different.

The roadblocks were really annoying. I had the same issue. But that was the only thing I really didn't like about the game. Otherwise, it was a heck of a lot of fun.

Yeah, it was alot of fun. Most fun I had in awhile honesty. Hopefully, DR4 will be fun as well. Oh yeah, this is minor, but I am hoping that it isn't quite as dark visually. I like deep blacks in my games, but there were literally moments in the game where I could not hardly even see my character in front of me and I was looking at a black screen due to the darkness. Maybe, it was my TV settings, but none of my other games are near that dark.

So the first 8 or 10 mins I was really worried. After a while, I started to like it more again. I pretty much hate what they've done to Frank, but I loved DR3 and this looks like more of that. I'm in Day One. :D

Fuck the Fans: The Game

Getting rid of everything that made DR a beautifully well realized time management simulator and just making a shitty Dynasty Warriors game is a real downer, but not terribly surprising after DR3.

Expect people to come in to this topic going "Well, I never liked the timer, or the survivors, or managing health, so fuck all those things! I'm happy an entire franchise lost it's identity in order to appeal to me and my low standards!"

This series seems to have taken a similar transition from the Saints Row franchise. First two games, especially Saints Row 2 people loved, then take steps backwards with Saints Row 3, then completely turn the series into a total joke with Saints Row 4. Not even the same games anymore.

Same here. Drastic difference in tone and realism from DR1 to DR4. Like Saints Row, while it did have some wacky stuff, they are getting more and more overboard with each new entry. Eventually, like now, it's not even the same game.

Besides mentioning the Frank West a dozen times, if you told me this was a Dead Rising game, I wouldn't have believed it. It's sad. :(

DR1 was one of the best games of last gen.

This doesn't look good. Character models are average. Animation sucks. Hit detection looks awful. Not a fan of the voice acting, but Frank had some funny lines in there.

The sleeper-hold selfie was hilarious though.

Doesn't look or sound like Frank. Hit box on some of his attacks are off.
He's trying too hard to be funny. I miss the old Frank West. Its not the same.

This looks pretty awful.

Frank is overpowered right from the beginning of the game. What do you even need to level up for now. Will he become invincible by the mid of the game?

I will still buy and play it though.

Only thing that could redeem this for me is just saying screw it and following "Off The Record" with a Frank West & Rebecca Chang team up.

Chuck Green and his annoyance dies in that time-line, so I'd be completely OKAY with that.

One of the most stressful trophies i've ever got. I had just repaired my YLOD ps3 for the 3rd time and knew it could die at any moment
