This book is like the Hunger Games, if the Hunger Games was super racist.

Except people were turning into birds not dark skinned people...

I still feel bad when I think about how Tobias got stuck as the bird/hawk? and couldn't turn back because he surpassed the 2 hour limit.

Paper or plastic?
Guess I'll be reading it too, if for nothing else than a laugh and morbid curiosity.

It's just so absurdly ridiculous.

Everything is moe to me
this reminds me of another book, it was about these bug aliens taking over earth and they're all black and racists, they kill the president for back talking as a white guy and promote some random minister to be in charge of human government because he was the only black guy around at the time.

so the aliens gave all the black people positions of relative power and made them slave supervisors and stuff like that. I think it had a sequel or something because i dont remember the book having a definitive ending.

don't remember the name of the book though.

This isn't vanity published, it's self-published. Sort of a quibble, but they're specific terms with specific meanings.

Why do the promo for it? And bet people will give it even more of a push on Twitter.

Yeah, this. Why make a thread about this at all? This is probably exactly what she was hoping for. We're helping get the word out to the Stormfront types.

Did you forget that he can still morph as a hawk? He got the ability back from the Ellimist for some reason, and his default form is the hawk.

Oh yeah, and this book sounds stupid.

Is there something white that is seen in a traditionally derogatory manner?

I was trying to think of a hierarchy where white would suck and black would be awesome. There are black objects that have positive connotations, but I'm seriously struggling to think of something white that has historically and universally negative connotations.

Ghosts. That's what gwailo means, for example, and I think there are a couple of other examples of slang words for white people that basically mean "ghost" or "spirit."

I don't think she's racist. Just an inexperienced writer.

It is possible to talk about race and not be trying to rewrite the Turner diaries.

I could attribute uneven pacing, mundane characters, or slow plot development to inexperience. I will always attribute racist shit to racism.

I would post this ridiculousness on my Facebook, but I don't want to give this author any more publicity. What a stupid concept and what stupid quotes in that HP interview.

I'm gonna write a book about a dystopian future where white men hold all the power, and it's very difficult for a black woman to marry outside her race. She smears her hair with straighteners to gain societal acceptance.

May I have my Pulitzer please!!

Assuming you're not a Beast-Man, I think you're good.

See, it's like a bizarro world. The beast men are doomed to have sex with young fit teenage white girls. Doomed.

and this is young adult lit. I think about the intended demo, the underlying messages, and just laugh and laugh.

The author talks about the book, I like this bit

Not only does she cast doubt on black people being readers, but she pulls the "my best friend is black" and "the get over it " double combo.

Ahahaha, this sucks. I read the Amazon preview and it sounds awful..."that bitch Ashina"?

Ashina? How did that happen? Eden Newman? Bummer dude...and the introduction of her head band is handled poorly.

Looking at this thread just reminded me of a a thread that gaf needs. We need a cheesy bookcover thread. There's just so much out there. I would make the thread if I wasn't forever a junior. :(

Honestly it almost reads like a YA version of the black-man fetish you see in porn so often. Where black men are these cruel dangerous big dudes who will ravage young white women (to their delight). What a weird fetish, but I ain't mad at it.

All that subtle (haha I know "subtle") racism aside I caught this

At age twenty-two, he only has two years left in which to mate—or else he’d probably have a 100% mate-rate.

So what's the window then?

There's fan speculation that Tobias willingly trapped himself since he hated his life as a human.

The best part is that it took two books to get to the guy who had the most dramatic change to his life after the first book. If you're writing a book series with multiple narrators, then your publisher wants a the next book to feature a female narrator to attract girls.

"Save The Pearls Part One"

Something tells me we won't be seeing a sequel.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. A lot of crap gets through publishers as long as there is buzz around it or the author knows the right people.

Females get until they turn 18. Males get until they turn 24. Due to solar radiation plot bullshit, humans only live to their forties anyway, so 18/24 is the end of ideal reproductive capabilities for the respective genders, and your rating goes down the closer you get to the limit and theoretical reproductive non-excellence. Men get six extra years because, and I quote:

Men’s reproductive systems are not as subject to The Heat as women’s; the testes hang outside of the male body, providing a natural cooling system. Therefore, men have longer to mate

At the cutoff date, if you're not mated you stop getting food/water/mood altering drugs because the government only cares about people making babies because making babies is the most important (unless you're two white people--then you're only allowed to make one baby to limit your awful genetics from propagating.) Also terrorists come along and disappear you after that point.

The protagonist is almost 18, has turned down two proposals from white guys because she's trying to social-climb, and so is staring down a death sentence and hoping the coal security officer she's been leaking information about her dad's top secret research to will want to mate with her. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT HERE.

This book is so awful in so many ways, based on the website, that I want to read it, but I don't want to give the author money.

They can't make shade?

In the racist dystopian future, humanity lives in underground tunnels. The official 'science' explanation is:

The Heat is caused by deadly, toxic levels of solar radiation. Its effects are horrific, resulting in a painful, tortuous death—imagine burning alive, from the inside out, for a week or two. The majority of Pearls are unable to step outside without contracting The Heat, whereas the Coals are protected from the sun’s radiation by the higher amounts of melanin in their skin.

Regardless, some lighter-skinned Coals still catch The Heat, so most of their population only ventures outside at night, when the effects of radiation are at its lowest. Some Pearls—especially those fairest in complexion, are never able to step outdoors.

So basically it's magic cancer.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
She's a white girl attracted to a "dangerous beastman? Sounds like racist Twilight.

Being a brown man, that world sounds like my life would be pretty awesome.

There are so many synonyms for the word black, it's very telling that the author chose "coals".

Also, why would the dark skinned elite call name themselves after a non-renewable resource that pollutes the environment, and the undesirable whites are named after a sought after, valuable commodity that is considered universally beautiful? Oh wait. I just answered my own question.

Notice that it's all minerals or hard deposits in ascending order of value (coal, tiger's eye, amber, pearl) as the skin gets whiter, then the author remembered albinism exists and just called them "cotton" even though it's not related to the others at all..
