Yooka-Laylee launches April 11th, considering Switch version instead of Wii U

There's no evidence the idea of technical issues is a 'lie' you might want to chill out on that one everyone. There's no reason for them not to deliver the Wii U version if they could and still release the Switch version later.

There's no Unity game of this size and scope on the Wii U. I imagine it came to the point they either had to cut features to make it run or admit it was never really going to work. If anything I would say that claiming they would release a Wii U version in the beginning was wildly optimistic

It's like I'm sure they could have made a Wii U version if it made enough sense financially. There can be technical issues and those things are not mutually exclusive. But can you really blame anyone for not wanting to release a Wii U game in mid-2017?

Anyways looking forward to the Switch version.

Huh, physical version @ 40$ is not much more than what I pledged for digital+toy box IIRC, will probably switch to physical when they figure it out, worried that would significantly delay me getting it though.

Switch would be great for a portable version. WiiU Kickstarters stopped making sense a while ago.

God damn the visuals in the casino level look so shiny.

I hope my 960 will handle it at 60fps.

Unlikely though with Unity running behind the scenes... Why didn't they use Unreal 4 instead?

I like how they think the "opportunity" to move your backing to a different platform "free of charge!" is a great consolation prize as opposed to being able to remove your pledge entirely. The "free of charge" was the real kicker, just lmao. Hey, we won't screw you over again! Good news!

You can email them about getting a refund

As a Wii U backer, I'm excited this is coming to the Switch. More than ready to find more reasons to unplug my Wii U from my TV forever sooner lol.

I'm sorry but... How can you have Xenoblade Chronicles X and not Yooka-Laylee running on the WiiU? It's because of Unity? Or because they are not good programmers enough?

My guess: is not that they can't but they don't have time or the resources to have a proper WiiU version.

Can't they just atleast release it digitally on Wii U eshop?
I'm sure they got a Wii U build already just finish it off with final code and done

Would you pay for a broken/unfinished game?

With three months till release, there's a lot of dev work left and a lot of bug fixes to do, they're not going to waste dev time on the Wii U version any more.

Unity is part of it, but there's a ton going on in Yooka-Laylee not happening in Xenoblade. Physics is a big one, also no telling on particle effects and anything else going on CPU wisr. The Wii U was poorly layed out and it's well known to be hard to develop for.

That, and there's no point in putting the most work in the version that will sell the least.

I read my backer email about this this morning. Comes to no surprise honestly. I already have a copy and a bunch of goodies headed my way. I will re buy this on the Switch, I am that excited for this!

No, it's called PR in a release statement which basically boils down to a much larger audience on the Switch compared to the Wii U. It makes business sense really, that shit is dead.

Why do we have to pay £15 to change platform when the whole point of backing it was that we got a free copy? That doesn't make sense. I'm not paying twice.

Agreed. Will buy day one for Switch!

Kind of expected this since Unity is a dubious engine to make such a large game on, at least one for the Wii U. I don't know how Oddworld New 'n' Tasty runs on the Wii U but that game had problems even on the PS4 and I can't imagine Wii U is much better.

I like how the new level embraces the Banjo-Kazooie-ism of level design dichotomy - open, fairly jolly level followed by hidden interiors that are threatening and maniacal. It's stuff like this that made Clanker's Cavern and Rusty Bucket Bay such memorable levels.

I'm confused about this. On the main page it says:

We’d like to apologise to those affected by this development and offer all Wii U backers the opportunity to move their pledge free-of-charge to any of the versions launching on April 11th (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac or Linux) or upgrade to the Nintendo Switch version when we announce further details in 2017.

But then on the Wii U FAQ page it says:

All affected Wii U backers can choose another platform to receive a digital copy of Yooka-Laylee for, at the significant Kickstarter discount of more than 50% on the retail cost (£15 vs. £35). Wii U backers can also choose to wait for updates on the Nintendo Switch early next year.

So.. wha?

Woooo I'll buy this on PC given how some Unity games on PS4 have launched with poor performance in the past.

Super interested in a switch version too...

As a Wii U owner I don't mind the cancellation. It's expected at this point.

Slightly torn on this one to be honest. I am sure there were plenty of WiiU owners backing this (as they said) and they were apparently handling the WiiU version in house but the total lack of screenshots, video, information or anything really was a massive alarm bell. I don't think they ever got it in a decent working state to be honest.

If they honour refunds if people email them then that is good, but finally releasing this info just 4 months before release can't help me think this is a bit, I don't know, wrong.

Saying that I love all the people working on this and am excited for it, think I will go for the PS4 version.

As much as it sucks for the Wii U owners who want those games, it really makes zero sense for these ongoing kickstarter projects to develop ports for a dead system.

They should offer refunds to anyone who backed the Wii U version, though.

Like me. =/

Oh, well. Makes sense.

Well, so much for the Wii U version "getting the right attention" as they once put it, lol.

It makes sense though. The Wii U is history at this point.

I'm quite happy they're taking the sensible way by ditching the Wii U and releasing it on the Switch. It's hard to believe that I'm going to play so many games within the first year--probably more games than I've ever owned for the entire collection of Wii and Wii U games.

Agreed. Most people with a bit of awareness and business sense probably saw the cancellation of the Wii U version coming for quite awhile. Wouldn't surprise me if Playtonic quietly internally canned the Wii U version many months ago and development resources moved to Switch back then.

It means that the backer price is £15 and that retail is £35. Switching your pledge (£15 and up) nets you the game, while those outright purchasing (non-backers) will pay £35.

I was hoping they would make a switch version, but was still hoping it would come out on the Wii U for the people who really wanted that. I hope the physical version of the switch version isn't too long of a wait.

So this will be another third party game to release everywhere on one date and then on Nintendo at a later date. Sigh...

I don't think it's safe to assume the Switch version is launching later. They're just not allowed to actually announce it until January, which seems to be Nintendo's policy for all Switch games. In that sense, this message was a beautifully-crafted non-announcement.

My interpretation is that they're trying to convince you to not ask for a refund by reminding you how little you paid in the first place. Definitely needs rewording, though.

I had a feeling this would happen to the Wii U version. Zero footage released of it and, AFAIK, it's far more technically ambitious than any Unity game on the platform.

The biggest sticking point is Switch isn't day one. Hopefully they can get it to happen faster than they think.

I can honestly say I didn't expect this. I thought since they were working on it internally it would still come. I guess we'll be busy enough with Switch games to wait for the Switch version versus getting it on XB1. Especially now that Mario is seemingly potentially coming out first.

I didn't think of this, but good point, it is possible it could still come to Switch at the same time as other platforms. Here's hoping!

Considering this will probably have very limited release on South America I'm tempted to buy a physical version from amazon and until someone flies to the US to pick it up for me I will double dip and buy a digital ps4 version.

I'm honestly okay with this, & I'm sure most people would feel the same way. I'm just glad Nintendo's helping Playtonic out with the whole thing.

Has anybody else had any joy downloading the toy box? I preordered last night on my Xbox one and the toy box isn't available for download. It says "instant access" to the toy box demo if you preorder...

Im watching these videos and I'm sorry it doesn't look fun at all, looks quite average in its design tbh. I see 3D Mario and I'm just blown away at the mechanics and creativity, I'm not getting the same feeling here. Sorry Play Tonic, hope the game scores well and I'm wrong.

Instant access only on Steam as far as I'm aware. The press release stated that they are working on a solution for console.

I am sadly not impressed with their current lighting... I do hope that changes before release. Maybe it was due to the WiiU version?

E: Backed for XBO, but sad the WiiU version won't be making it out. Totally understandable, though, as the Switch will be out by that point, and it really isn't worth the extra investment in effectively a dead console.
