TITANFALL 2 Reviews Thread

Out of the 9 maps, 4 (IMO) seem to confirm the issues some of the community were worried about. Limited and tunnel-like.

Base pilot speed was increased during Tech Test. Titans stayed the same IIRC.

Batteries are still a thing. Some like it, others believe it's unnecessary tedium.

You can't customize the Titans with the primary weapon or ordnance you'd like.

Titan Smoke is now based on a meter threshold

IIRC they made dodge recharge faster. The other big one was adding passive gain to the Titan meter.

Is this game good to play online as a solo player?

The first wasn't when the game became unpopular, but devs have posted that those issues aren't in this as much with their new matchmaking model. Or something. You'll be fine as a lone wolf for at least 6 months if it is like the original at worst.

I think the passive gain to titan meter is practically irrelevant but service to the complaints. This is something a lot of people didn't even understand, they thought the meter reset on death and only kills worked. But it turns out everything works towards it and only bonus progression resets on death. The gradual meter gain is nice because people felt that was important, but I think it's largely irrelevant towards how the game actually plays out.

I actually liked the smoke change as it comes pretty early and everyone gets access to it.

Hmm.

Do i get to play as a mech a lot in tf2 online and campaign?

Bc tbh i just want to fill my mech assault hole that MS left me with.

There is a mode that is round based and you start with a titan at the beginning of each round. So if you really wanna play titans, choose last titan standing.

I can't comment on the campaign though.

I like most of the Titan changes. I've seen the argument that removing shields makes titans throw away and nothing can be further from the truth. Now that they have their own "loadouts" people will choose their favorites. Apply their skin, nose art, etc. to express themselves. The battery system makes you think about the way you use your titan and how you keep your friendly neighborhood AI companion (or WMD) alive. If you want to play like "R1" run in deal damage then run and hide in TF2 your going to have a bad time. I like the fluidity of titan combat this time around. You know their titan chassis you know they're abilities...which means you know what to expect.

Campaign is probably... 70% percent pilot, I would say. There are times when you can't get into your titan but he's with you. It's good though and there are a couple of Titan moments which are incredible.

As said above, there is a mode where you start in a mech, but even in normal modes if you are careful with your titan and use the battery mechanic (leave your titan, pick up a battery, climb back in) your titan is quite survivable. Recent matches I've probably been in my titan 50% of the time.

No complaints here about everyone having access, my issue is that it has to be earned instead of being ready to go by default. You have little to no counter to pilots once they're on if you're smoke is not ready.

Smoke goes up pretty quickly doesn't it? I think it is around 30-40% core charge, pretty easy to get. If you are unlucky enough to get rodeoed right off the bat you still have plenty of health left, and when your HP is lower you generally would already have the smoke to counter more threatening rodeos.

Additionally you can slot the "Overcore" kit for you Titan, which starts you with 30% core charge... meaning you start with Electric Smoke available.

Ehh
I would consider myself an above average player and acquiring the smoke was still a pain in the ass. Something that essential should be on by default. You had options in TF1 you could count on. I cant even recall how to replenish the smoke? Is it on a cooldown or do you have to meet another threshold? Can you replenish?

I believe that's the same spot for the Dash kit? A necessity for the Dash-less Scorch.

Much like boosts, you earn one on the way to your core. They stack up to 5 I believe.
And of course there's a kit that gives you two instead of one, but with the same trade-off vs. Extra Dash vs. Nuclear Eject vs. Overcore.

Choices, choices...

Ah, thanks.
Just seems like they want you out of your Titan as much as possible. Do other people feel the same way? Probably not. I can't help but think that's their aim when they tip the balance towards pilots.

Gotcha. But like it won't be a big problem if I don't play with friends or anything?

I played the original off and on for a couple years after it came out. I went back and got all the achievements for it and everything. I did not have much trouble playing solo at all, most of my playtime was solo. I tried to hop between all the different modes as much as I could.

Last year it got a little bit more difficult to find players in a couple playlists though.

I get things change but how much realistically can change since the beta? I can't believe they actually could pivot on alot of these mechanics in 2 months

Their aim was likely to not let players keep their Titans for the entire match.

I would imagine that could have been part of the reason it drove people away from the first game.

Which mechanics didn't you like? I mean, a lot of people didn't seem to understand them entirely. But I think a bigger factor was not seeing the larger picture since a lot of the pilot/titan kits were not included (plus of course the limited map pool). I think once the bigger picture is included, it sheds some light on their decisions.

Also gotta keep in mind that the tech test pre-alpha build was already old by the time we got our hands on it. So they've really had many more than 2 months of finishing the game.

Any word on resolution on the two console versions?

I prefer the X1 controller for shooters but I could be convinced to go PS4 if the resolution difference is noticeable (720p vs 1080p, etc).

Always seems to come back to bite me in the ass when I buy multiplatform games on the X1.

Which is bullshit imo, whats the point of playing a game with mechs if you don't want the mechs.

Because pilots fighting the mechs and gathering points to build their own is also an important and fun part of the game, that you wouldn't have if everybody could stay inside a titan for the whole game.
Dropping your Titan is like a super in a fighting game, you have to build up your meter to earn it and then make the best of it before going back to normal state (with the difference that if you're good, you can make your titan last longer)

Titanfall is not game all about mechs. It's that simple. Pilot gameplay is just as focused on in the franchise as titan gameplay. Don't like it? Maybe play a different game.

And imo titans are just as strong in TF2 as in TF1. Perhaps even stronger in all ways but the regenerating shields. The changes they made were definitely give and take.

That's the disappointing part imo- it could have been a twitch shooter AND a Mecha game, instead of a twitch shooter that just so happens to have Mecha occasionally. Getting two audience with one game.

And from what I've understood from people the Mecha part has been dial down more as well?

.

Yeah I would to play all these other Mech games coming out...

EDIT: like I get what you two are saying, it's just that it feels like a wasted opportunity to me.

Well the thing about Titanfall is that it's not an either/or scenario, where you could choose to play either twitch shooter style or mech style. In this game you always play both styles ; which is the beauty of it, because it makes for a consistent experience with multiple play styles, rather than giving the feeling of two games taped together.

And from what I've understood from people the Mecha part has been dial down more as well?

Not really, but it got some changes : there is more choice but less customization for Titan loadouts, and they went from a regenerating health model to health pickup one.

I played a couple of games of Titanfall to get ready for tonight and damn I'm rusty. But I've still got it. There were lots of new players who were probably doing the same.

Another really important thing about the batteries is it adds interplay between the Pilot and Titan 'phases' of the game. Beyond just killing enemy Titans as a Pilot, you can steal their battery for your friendly Titans, and charge your meter doing so.

Organized teams chaining battery steals and buffing friendly Titans are going to be really brutal, even more than they normally are against unorganized or ungrouped teams.

There is also strategy of waiting on your titan to call one down once you've already stolen a battery, giving you a shield to start with.

I think people have really been underrating the battery system, and over-valuing the old regenerating shields quite a bit.

Wow higher meta score than bf1. Is this game really that good? I played the beta and just thought it was ok. Bf1 however is the most fun I've had playing an online fps since cod4

Ah, thanks.

I dont think so. They just finally balanced it. TF1 you could keep your first titan the entire damn match if you were somewhat skilled and/or you were playing with a team. Now, in order to do that you'll have to employ some serious skill and cooperation through battery regeneration and team dispersal of said batteries to last close to that long.

Titanfall is about the Pilots first and foremost. The Titans are what come second. Most matches for average players can end up being around a 50% time split between Titan and Pilot combat.

IMHO TF2 fixed what i disliked about the Titans with TF1.
