My point is, if the documents point to someone higher up and he is off less importance, they still have a method to compel his testimony and compliance with document requests.

Further into the video was Trump describing the situation he is in today. I'm sure it's been said, but all the things he blames someone else is what he has already done or will do in the future.
Maybe he'll come clean in the next CNN interview

So right now he has no formal charges against him, so he essentially remains silent. If charges are filed, he can no longer plead the fifth, and must cooperate, otherwise face contempt charges? But in that case either way the court can force him to give up those docs?

They should just jail him until he turns all his document over. Trump can't pardon him if he's not convicted.
I don't think the ACLU would be very happy with that.
