Bought the tickets September 15 which was right after the tickets were released.

I then checked a few days before the reviews dropped, and just a few more seats had been purchased. After the reviews dropped, I decided to take a look again only to find out that the whole theatre had been sold out.

The RT effect is real.

Seems Villeneuve likes the current score at least.

I'm really interested in more specific reasons as to why Johansson got the boot. He mentions putting his foot down and have the CS80 be prominent in the soundtrack. Maybe Johansson refused to acquiesce? Or maybe his work just sucked I guess.. :p

Star Wars as a series has only two amazing movies ( A New Hope and Empire Strike Back ), the rest of it is trash to mediocre, Star Wars is not a series with much things to do, the universe is very limited and manichean, we don't need to waste Villeneuve on it, especially now that Disney is involved, you can be sure that almost no creativity is required or needed.

Said it better than I could.

Also Abrams being back for episode 9, the mess that is the han solo movie and Rogue One, which I loved, getting mixed reception doesn't fill me with confidence for the series.

Though day one for a Obi Wan film.

Give Villenueve full creative control of everything he does. He won't get that at Disney.

Got 2 tickets for Friday night. It's an hour and a half to the nearest IMAX theater; gonna listen to Vangelis' soundtrack on the drive down. God I can't wait.

This Denis Villeneuve could be "wasted" on in the next few years instead of doing another original film:
- Bond
- Cleopatra
- Dune

Why do we want to add Star Wars to that list? Dune is the only one there which is remotely interesting to see him attempt.

I've never read Dune, but everything of heard about it seems like it could make for a write movie. I'm excited to see what he does with that but I'd hope he never touches Bond or Cleopatra.

You mean you don't want another Daniel Craig James Bond movie, which would be the 25th movie in the franchise and his 5th James Bond movie? :p

I wouldn't mind him seeing do Cleopatra, mainly because I'd love to see his approach to historical battles and assassinations, but would much rather see him tackle Dune

And Arrival and Enemy were both book/story adaptations, btw. He's also slated to adapt the Jo Nesbo novel The Son

Makes me happy that he has a long career ahead of him.

Arrival and Enemy are adaptations in the same way Nolan's Prestige is an adaptation. (Not much adapted beyond themes and loose structure)

My problem isn't with adaptation anyway, heck, his masterpiece - Incendies, is an adaptation of a play. Pretty close adaptation too. The problem is a talented director wasting his time on something that has been done so many times before.

So no more new reviews?

I'm sure a lot of reviewers, especially internationally, have not seen a screening yet, and/or planned their writing around the original embargo.

I'd quite like to see his take on Bond tbh over Dune.

Villeneuve + a Craig who gives a shit = a Bond at least as good as Casino Royale, which is in the top three of my Best Bonds. QoS, Skyfall and Spectre were just various degrees of average.

I agree he'd be wasted in the Star Wars sandbox

The only way I’d like to see Denis do a Star Wars or Bond film is if he was given 100% freedom.. and that’s not gonna happen.

Nah there are good bond movies, Dune hasn't gotten the treatment it deserves.

I think he can get 100% freedom on a Bond film, but it would still be a waste. Even if it's the best Bond film ever made, so what? It's still a Bond action blockbuster with Daniel Craig as an aging Bond no one gives a fuck about anymore. What's there left to really say that's meaningful? Nothing. Bond is just about spectacle, and how well executed it is.

You know Nolan wants to do Bond, in a same sense as Spielberg wanting to do Bond. But they both are too big for the franchise and would only be brought in if they had creative control. Which isn't happening as long as it's under the same producers.

If BR blows up into a Mad Max, he's not doing Bond. There is no point for him to do it unless he really just wants his name on the movie, or Craig's pull is basically "I won't do it without him". The one last ride mentality before the recast I can see happen. It does seem like Craig wants to go out on a high note and only he could force Eon to give DV control.

Dune, it seems like he would have a lot more control over. Only been once attempted and its consider a failure. I feel like he would have a lot more control with that film than Bond.

Cleopatra is an inserting twist. It's the exact opposite of everything he's done, but if he was smart, I'd stay away from it for a bit for two reasons. There is going to be a massive casting issue regardless. 2nd is historical epics haven't seen to be performing too well as of recently.

SW is a why the fuck? It's like Bond, unless he really just wants to add it to the list, but there is nothing there for him.

I can't help but feel that this messianic treatment of Denis will eventually lead to his Dark Knight Returns (i.e. bad movie)

The man must be challenged!

Mendes is/was arguably bigger than Villeneuve and seemed to have creative control (or at least enough of it) to do Skyfall and Spectre.

In any case, Dune is still in an early stage and he's just in talks about Cleopatra, so it's not as if doing Bond would impede either of these things.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Denis should take over the Transformers franchise from Michael Bay and make it into an audio visual feast while also being a powerful and gripping take on what right, wrong and rolling out.

He could take one for the team and make it so this Cleopatra actually takes down the studio producing it.

I don't think that's likely because even if he goes all out his budget is going to be rather conservative even for an epic. The guy you want to help bankrupt a studio with a stinker is Gore Verbinski. :p

I'll have to see Blade Runner 2049 to make any claims on how truly great a director Villeneuve is but let's be real, the true challenge here is going to be adapting something as dense, heady and challenging as Dune to the big screen. If he can knock that out of the park I think that will be an even bigger achievement than a great sequel to Blade Runner. That and I'm a huge fan of the novel and think it would still be incredibly relevant today.

This is laughable. You only have to look at the games to see the potential the universe has.

Yeah Denis is a better director than Nolan.

They make fundamentally different kinds of movies. I think Nolan's issues are with balancing high concept ideas with character development as focusing on one results in the other being neglected.

The closest in style to a "Nolan movie" Denis has done was Arrival so it's interesting to compare that to Nolan's movies. Reading through the thread for that, you see VERY similar criticisms. People not understanding, getting to wrapped in discrediting fictional science that requires some suspension of disbelief, etc

He's too good for Star Wars.

The fuck is even happening in this thread

He would be perfect for a SW movie.

He could do a VARIETY of things in that universe that would turn out amazing.

You're all acting like giving an opportunity to play in sci fi's biggest universe is some taboo thing and it's weird as hell

Like he only has enough time in his life for a couple more projects

He could also do a variety of other sci if movies that more fit his style and that might need a director like him to even get off the ground, much less turn out well. Star Wars doesn't need him and vice versa.

Well.. They don't NEED each other but that's a really bizarre argument to make

"He shouldn't play in this universe because he doesn't need to"

Buy him playing in the blade runner sequel universe

That's fine

And totally different than having the creative freedom to do a SW film

Did blade runner NEED him, and he needed blade runner? Like there was no one else who could have done a good job?

Yes given his clear talent with heady sci-fi with Arrival. It also aligns with the style of the rest of his oeuvre.

No, Villeneuve didn't need Blade Runner. A sequel was never needed to begin with, but if the film had to be made, I think Villeneuve was far and away the best guy for the job.

It's a case of the film needing the director more than the director needing the film, imo.
