Official May 2008 NPD Thread - Wii, GTA IV, and more Wii

This is the slowest moving NPD thread in the history of NeoGAF...

Last months monstrous NPD thread was the official "The Wii has won" month of acceptance. Shy of a few more meltdowns, I am pretty sure last month was the peak for this gen.

Nope.

Reggie said 1 million Wii Fit Day 1 in the U.S.

Time to start doubting Reggie again. :lol

This is already covered in the thread... Reggie said his goal was to have one million Wii Fit.

Also, it looks like the "Buy a 360+GTA IV and get a $50 gift card" offer that they had at various stores didn't help push much 360 hardware at all.

get me the Star Trek background here, whose body is being blasted into space?

Spock when he died.

Wii supplies are constrained? Two of my friends picked one up for their children during the last month. They couldn't get a whiff of one until now. Anecdotal evidence and all that...

Wii Fit is supply constrained. the Wii is pretty much status quo.

I'll give you a hint. The movie after this one was called "The Search For Spock". :lol

EDIT: Laserbeam!

I bet that was Jeff Bell's brainchild.

The only "battle" left regarding the Wii is the "3rd parties dontz sellz on Wii" argument.

Damn, looks like "Next Gen" HWD sales went down even with GTA

And PS3 outselling 360 is shocking. I bet it continues this month with the release of MGS4. Could MS be in trouble here??

The 360 has a lead of 5,804,528 in the US. Their software sales are much greater than the PS3 so I think they are fine.

Everyone disappointed with those Wii numbers? I know I am. :(

Well, Nintendo had a good run. Next time, try to manufacture enough games, controllers and consoles.

Why? They're the highest unit sales for a console in May, ever.

And I think demand and supply may actually be equalizing. I have a couple of Wiis available in one of my stores (in Tunica, Mississippi) that haven't moved (which says nothing, it's a casino store) But I thought about picking them up myself and putting them on eBay, only to find that they're not going for all that much money anymore.

Maybe, just maybe, the Wii will be a normal product (available in stores) for a bit this year, before the Christmas shopping season hits.

I would've been within 30k error on my predictions this month, as would a lot of us I bet. It's boring and expected, just like media create turned out.

=(

That's because it's still a shitty deal. MS needs to extract their opposable digit from their opposable ass and drop the freaking price. Not namb-pambi $50 shit either. I will accept a price drop of no less than $74.99...Do you hear me MS! ;-)

It was also because many of them thought GTA was going to save HD gaming; the last NPD essentially sucked them all into reality.

All we have left is the battle for 2nd place, and since the PS3 is not turning up the heat, it will be a boring ass battle for a long long time.

Strictly due to supply constraints. I hope you aren't staking those numbers as some type of victory. Hell, WiiFit may have higher numbers the rest or part of the year. :lol

PS3 - 4,450,000
Wii - 10,180,000
X360 - 10,270,000

That whole 'first to 10M' thing, and the later, er, 'clarification' of it... looking up the quote, it's actually:

“History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle.”

Hasn't history also shown us that the first company to reach, oh, let's say... 10.5 million in console sales wins the generation battle? The thing about *big* arbitrary numbers like that is there's nothing particularly special about *which* big arbitrary number you pick.

I think at this point MS has to get down to 199 as soon as possible in one form or another, it won't help them beat Wii, but I think it will give them a more solid position in the marketplace

Yeah, the price point definitely seemed to have killed that deal.

I'm expecting a price drop in the fall like they did last year, but I'm not confident that it will be a significant price drop.

Through 18 months, total Wii 3rd-party sales >= total 360 3rd-party sales in the U.S. The caveat being that 360 probably had a lot fewer releases through 18 months, so those sales were concentrated in fewer games.

We Ski ??? :D :D :D hope this means some mor games from namco...

We Ski is actually a good game, it just lacks content.

Robotnik's GIFs aren't loading for me.

Also I'd say GH3 Wii would outsell the other versions handilly if the other versions weren't coming out.

And damn at Mario Kart Wii, hopefully this means the online will continue for a long long time.

the whole history shit is actually a funny anecdote

the 360 mimicked the successful consoles of past generations

their system is based on historically strong franchises, strong developers and familiar strategies

while Nintendo has taken a whole new approach.. which has two historical precedents

the virtual boy and the nintendo ds

isnt mario kart ds online still going pretty strong ??

It's bad netiquette to quote images, especially when it's a six meg animated .gif. I had to block the host since the multiple quotes were slowing my computer to a crawl.

Oh I'm not saying its a particularly valid argument; just the only one left that some people will still try to claim.

Pretty blah month everywhere. Its summer and the industry is asleep only to awaken again sometime around September.

They are still ahead millions upon millions of units. 20k ahead in a month is a BB at a freight train.

considering that PS3 sells better than 360 in nearly every EU country/Japan and now is at a neck and neck monthly battle with 360..dismissing so quickly isn't logical.

Wow, Nintendo took 7 of the top 10 software rankings. It seems very unreal to see GTA IV as the only charting 360 / PS3 game versus only Nintendo software (well, and Iron Man..), and it's multiplatform. Even We Ski came in on # 12..

Mario Kart Wii did fantastic, almost 2 million now already :) Anyone know how Double Dash did in the same period?

Semi-dissapointing hardware numbers for Wii though, as well as Wii Fit. HD hardware is just pathetic.

Makes you wonder what western third party publishers are thinking right now (the past month with that NPD too).

Wii continuing to roll.

Holy crap @ Mario Kart. Big big second month.

It was supply constrained in April, based on my own experience in trying to buy one.

It took me until late May to find a copy.

No. Died pretty much three months after it came out due to snakers.

Yeah, but America is a large market and the 360 lead is a huge challenge to overcome.

Wait... I just saw Anita Frazier's comments editted into the OP. Is she SERIOUS? she's STILL clinging to a GTA bump in JUNE? my god, they just can't admit they're wrong. Are we going to hear about an independence day bump next?

I don't usually care for these threads, but in the PA arcade mgs thread where people were banned, this thread was advertised as something the banned people would miss out on. None of this stuff tells me anything or seem worth anything other than sony did a good job in not spending up to 50mil even if it was a loan/investment. People seemed to have put too much faith into Rockstar.
