Sony FY2015 Q2: PS4 shipment 4 million, cumulative sell in at 29.3 million

What's the difference between X amount of console shipped, and X amount sold to consumers? Why is there a distinction?

And second question; did the PS4 outpace the Wii at any stage because it looks like it's not and for some reason, I always had the impression PS4 was the fastest selling console of all time but looking at the OP, the Wii is beating it?

One is sold to stores, the other is consoles in people's hands.

Store consoles don't have the ability to purchase games.

You could have 100 million shipped but 1 million sold to consumers.

Do you think publishers would like that number or no?

Can we now put to rest the obsession that "exclusives" sell consoles? Sony did not outsell its competition 3:1 based on exclusives. Establishing an early lead as being "the place to play online" is helping PS4 more than any exclusive ever will.

Exclusives are a nice perk, but they're not the deciding factor in buying a gaming console.

Yeah. Since last gen big multipaltform games are the ones that drive hw sales. Before PS4 you could notice this with late gen X360 sales. Sony was pumping high quality exclusives to the market way more than MS and yet PS3 really didn't sell that much more in any year globally and in US was destroyed.

PS4 was outpacing Wii until early this year. After that we came to the time period launches aligned where Nintendo was able to solve stock issues with Wii and it sold absolutely crazy amounts for couple of years. It shipped more during normal quarters than most consoles ship during holiday quarters. Obviously now we know that later on it died quicker than any leading console so PS4 will still probably overall sell more.

Tough guy.

The poster is missing a few features from the XB1 on the PS4, alongside the controller. Is that really enough to confuse you?

edit:
Streaming to a PC, EA Access and backwards compability would all be some nice additions to the PS4, I think. Don't you agree?

Probably not really relevant to the discussion, but, I still don't understand why you'd want to stream console gameplay to a local PC.

Want to play a game sitting at your desk looking a monitor? Just walk your console across the room, and plug in an HDMI cable. Voila! No fuss, no latency, no image compression.

Welp. It was a good run fellas, but pack it up. Consoles are dead.

In all seriousness, this is pretty amazing stuff. Who'd have thought the PS4 would be outpacing the PS2 at this point?

I tend to agree with this. Bundles are where it's at for pushing sales.

Shipped (sold in) = includes systems at retail, in storage, in transit, etc
Sold (sold through) = bought by consumers only

As for your second question, PS4 launched higher than Wii and thanks to it's crazy launch figures stayed above it aligned until sometime in summer 2014. Xbox One also launched above Wii but fell behind it quicker aligned (spring 2014 iirc).

Also worth keeping in mind for aligned comparisons is that PS2's first 8 months were Japan only. If you align by region I believe PS4 fell behind PS2 last year a little after it lagged Wii.

Shipped = console maker->retailer
Sold = retailer->consumer

Shipped obviously will always be a little higher.

Sony pr doing work.
It was ahead of the Wii because the Wii shipments were lower in the beginning.
The ps4 also trails far behind the ps2 if you count from the us start.

Ah, thanks for the explanation guys, much appreciated!

PS3 sold better than 360 in pretty much every year except 2012.

don't throw at me, but ain't it funny that this console sells so good even it has by far not all(!) the good features? It has some cool and most of all power, power power. But:
think of a PS4 with snapping Apps, backwards compatibility, the xbox one controller, voice control, windows 10 streaming and ea access - that would be cool. And it would mean 45 millionen sold.
But (in my eyes) unfortunately most of the cool things/features I like are things are on the other side. (Thats why their 14-15 million is good too).
PS4 numbers are fantastic!

Basically you want the Xbox to be in the lead. Pretty apparent.

I did write earlier, what my point was. Unplugging the console, digging up the power brick from behind the TV-table etc. is just not worth it for an hours playing time, when the missus wants to watch some reality program stuff, when game streaming across the network just works.

It's pretty amazing they were able to ship 5 million in the slowest time of the year. They will most certainly do much better than that for the holidays. Probably 7-8(?) million.

they did it before and reaped the rewards with the 360. the problem is i don't know if more dedicated hardware is the industry's 'thing' right now, or ever again. i feel like they'd have to have some sort of angle with it to work, and i don't think they can go superpowered like they did with the 360 again either.

2018 would be a five year cycle though.

That's only because of Sony's sheer incompetence, and obviously the PS3's price. If the PS3 launched at $400, it would have been completely different story. Remember, the 360 didn't sell that well in its first year. People don't seem to realize that.

At the rate the PS4 is selling, Sony might have a chance of selling more consoles (not handhelds) than all of Microsoft and Nintendo's consoles combined by the end of this generation.

I think PS4 will pass the 40 million shipped mark by the end of FY2015 Q4.

That's pretty much a given at this point. On both points.

To be fair to him, when things didn't pan out the way he expected and Microsoft did the things they did, he had no problem going back on them. A lot of people are blinded by loyalty.

I'm pretty sure that the PS3 already started to outsold the 360 in 2009. It was a post so far from reality. Beautiful.

I Spit On Your Grave...lol. I haven't thought about that movie in years. Great post as usual, btw.

I don't think SE is overly happy with the outcome, but you have to remember that when they made the decision, they were looking at releasing at the same time as Uncharted 4. And while I think TR 2013 is a better game than any UC 1-3 in terms of gameplay and systems, TR 2015 would definitely be overshadowed by UC4.

Never forget the classics!

Yeah at the time I can see how it made sense I just felt it was a fragile move in that there was a lot of risk. My main concern was that this gen, moreso than last, the really big hitters are multi-platform and are therefore harder to control launch wise from MS/SE perspective meaning it was very possible for MS/SE initial plans to be impacted by external events.

With Fallout 4 picking that timeframe (never mind how close some other titles are too) that's exactly what's happened.

Really I think in the current market any kind of timed release unless carefully considered is now pretty risky.

Exclusive timed content (which I dislike personally BTW) from a business perspective is a much less risky choice and in hindsight (as with say AC and Destiny) it would have been better for TR to be multi-platform release but with say exclusive missions for Xbox.

Anyway it might still do okay - it's still a decent brand name and while it risks getting swamped it has a chance of standing out enough on its own.

We'll see soon enough I guess.

I predict some interesting threads though on GAF for TR particularly if it does get swamped by the other big releases.

Not quite two years old yet. Just got a price drop earlier this month. Biggest selling franchises have yet to hit the console (Uncharted (remasters don't count :p, GoW, GT, etc...)....

100m+ units is a go. It really makes the NPD and Media Create threads seem incredibly trivial. The emerging support from the newer markets are really pulling weight.

Oh, but consoles are dying or something like that. Frontloaded, frontloaded, blah blah etc etc

This post from top to bottom is just terrible. Literally everything said in this post is either wrong or just complete bullshit. Jesus.

ehhhhhhh.... I mean he jumped the gun a bit.. but let's not forget that was 2008. Over 7 years ago. Worldwide, the 360 was still stronger, and to Amirox's point.. the "age of sony" was done for a long time. Sony's exclusives prior to that were decent, coming close to matching 360s exclusives.. After that it came down to Sony first party.. whereas MS still had some tricks up their sleeves with 3rd parties.

Hyperbole? Yes. Did it mark a change in mind share even further toward 360 last gen? Probably. One that would take another 3-4 years to turn around for Sony (I mean he was right.. it was the next decade)

with these big numbers. i need more games to be announced.

lol.. I predict this meme will be around until the end of the gen.

games get announced

"great system. nice numbers. but where are the games?"

The PS4 doesn't have a power brick.

10 goddamn pages and this gif still hasn't been posted??

Is it a banned meme now? If so, I accept my punishment like a man.

I don't think it's banned. At least... I hope not. But this one should still be fine. Maybe.

I really doubt that Tomb Raider timed exclusive for XB1 deal paid more than all those lost sales would have...

40 million consoles when GT Sport and PSVR comes out. I don't care what anyone says about VR. I'm convinced it's going to sell shitloads, no matter the price (but hopefully under $300/£250!).

I mean, it will outsell Kinect and people will have enough cool, genuine uses for it that none of them will regret their purchase. 40 million potential consumers and growing. Affordable VR that will be a revelatory experience beyond any other single advancement we've ever seen beofre... How can it not sell, seriously?! Sony is showing great support for it and there's already a raft of titles coming to the device. Then there's all the entertainment apps that Sony haven't shown off yet. Remember partnerships with NASA etc. Let people stand on the Moon and show it off to their parents. Wii like success of VR as a platform IS possible.

Mark my words, VR starts with PlayStation 4.

Comparing PSVR to Google Glass is one hell of a lopsided comparison. Google Glass, the awkward thing you are meant to wear out in public, who's only benefit is a poor quality display floating in the corner of your vision to tell you what the weather is like or if you got a text message... hardly compares to something designed for living room use at home either by yourself or with a small gathering of friends/family, something which literally puts you in a game world and lets you interact naturally with that world. Be IN a Ferrari driving around Monza, stand ON the edge of a cliff overlooking the grand canyon, or a crater on the Moon... the two devices could not be more different.

VR delivers on it's promise in ways we could only have dreamed about a few short years ago. To overlook the huge ream of reaction videos from first timers trying these devices, to overlook the huge potential to change our world, and just lump it in with 3D glasses... madness. VR through word of mouth and public demo booths, will explode onto the wold's consciousness. Just wait until someone you know has it to try out, or it's on display at a local mall etc. Once people en masse, non gamers especially, see and experience VR, it will explode.
Man, you're getting me hyped! Stop it!

I'll admit, after watching the porn segments in VR and people's reactions, I do think it will be a nice market. I dunno about a Wii-craze, but yeah, I could see a Kinect level of success for PSVR easily, and with the right experiences, maybe more. Putting Gran Truismo in VR is pretty ace move by Sony. Have no doubt it will be the best way of actually driving in video-games, and be one of the those experiences where even if you don't have it, you go to your friend's house who does.

PS4 will be close to 40 million sold without releasing Gran Turismo , God of War , Uncharted or any of their big sellers.

Now this, this is CRAZY!

No Gran Turismo, Uncharted, God of War and it´s selling like this, i know many people that are still waiting for those Franchises.

On metacritic there are 105 games at 80 or above for PS4, and of those 36 are not on XBONE, and 17 of those are only on Sony platforms (i.e. neither PC nor iOS as well)

PS4 is two cables. Power and HDMI. there is no power brick. power and HDMI are both universal as well.. meaning you should be able to buy a second set of both for under $20 total to leave over buy your monitor.

all good things
Great quarterly and the market reacts by dropping their share price 4% before it opens. Nintendo is getting killed today too.

Wow, big numbers (and well deserved).

Now let's predict the point when it falls behind ps2...

How long would you give it? (it has to fall, right?)

Hooray for dedicated console gaming. Don't get complacent though, Sony. Need to ensure they have a steady stream of titles coming. From what I've heard on here, 2016 is looking good.

I love the wide range of genre and types of games. Sony could easily just make shooters and souls clones but they are using exclusive content to complete the software portfolio.

The Wii had no competition because it sold to a completely different market than its competitors. A market that has entirely abandoned Nintendo and console gaming at large hence the underwhelming performance of the Wii U. The outlier of the Wii does not in the slightest diminish the impressive sales that the PS4 has managed.

This. So sick and tired of hearing about the fad monster, sure it was the fastest selling console of alltime for 3-4 years, but didnt even outsell the playstation 1 and the brand is dead just after one gen, mean while playstation just keep on rolling and just doesnt have a 1 fad generation, it sells great for the past 4 generations even with the disappointing ps3 sales, it probably has another 3-4 gens of domination, now thats what you call a sales monster.

cool.

now make a silent PS4, or at least one that doesn't drown game music and voice acting in jet engine noise. i'll buy one immediately after selling the old one.
