I'm all for equal opportunity and tolerance, and I think we need to be open-minded regarding the ModBot family and their democratic right to vote.

However, I must question ModBot's bona fides on this matter: just how many games did ModBot play in 2015?

In years past we've typically had about 170 people vote on our SteamGAF GOTY. And even restricting it to 5 games per vote, we've ended up with around 150 total games represented. If we expanded it to 10 games per vote, we could easily see the total number go up but we probably wouldn't see too big of a difference in the top 10 games represented overall. With literally thousands of games eligible for voting, we have to keep a pretty narrow focus, otherwise we'll end up with information overload and results that don't mean as much.

And I'm sticking to my guns regarding remasters and re-releases. I know some are upset about the decision but like LurkerPrime summed up, the decision was made to keep things fresh. Dark Souls II, Divinity, Devil May Cry 4, etc have had their time to shine. At least next year Dark Souls III will be eligible.

Wait a minute... DMC4:SE isn't eligible either? That's some straight up bullshit. If so, I won't even bother to vote since 2/5ths of my vote would be ignored. :sigh:

Gonna finish up undertale by the weekend
I did not expect that at all....

Otherwise gonna be playing ryse son of rome and finishing up steins gate.

It'll help the people going "hey how come these achievement numbers don't add up?" at least. There's always one. :p
Yesterday, I had 32/40 achievements for The Talos Principle, with only 4 left displayed. I assumed the last 4 were secret - and they are - but I'm fairly certain they are also DLC related. That kind of sucks. Maybe Steam should separate the main list and each DLC?

MUnited83

For you.
Divinity and Dark Souls I can at least understand since they were already some of the most voted games of last year.

DMC4:SE not being eligible? Come on.

Do the ModBots know they wouldn't be able to vote for the auto-clicking script for the Monster Summer Game?

Speaking of which, I made an image for mystery giveaways for ModBot to use, but I forget if I shared it or not.

Wow that Fallout 4 thread turned grey quick.

Stay safe SteamGAF.

EDIT - I am going to try coop Dying Light now. I have become bored enough to not worry about missing anything.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Clarification: Does the ModBot disqualification rule apply to all the ModBots or just ModBot specifically.

Unfortunately all ModBots must be treated equally.

We have ModBot E3 Temp 1, ModBot E3 Temp 2, ModBot E3 Temp 3 as well :p

Now we gotta see those avatars.

Wait a minute... DMC4:SE isn't eligible either? That's some straight up bullshit. If so, I won't even bother to vote since 2/5ths of my vote would be ignored. :sigh:

Sorry man, but it falls under the same set of rules. It's a remaster of a game that was previously available on Steam. :(

Is gta5 not eligable in this case then?

What are you on about? XCOM is the best

Didn't say it wasn't, really. Just that he shouldn't get either. I'm not saying this because the game isn't potentially worth it in any way. I'm saying it as someone who checked out upward of $80 CAD in Steam titles for Shadownet for a minor discount slash.

Essentially, play what you have in your libraries now, then purchase XCOM 2 rather than purchase it now only for it to add to your never-ending backlog as often is the case.

Grand Theft Auto V is a port of a console game, but it released on Steam for the first time in 2015, so it's eligible. The same is true of Lightning Returns - it's the first time the game has been available on Steam so it's eligible.

Ah thought you were dissing the games, I agree on the pre-order part.

Though I will do the other way around I will get XCOM 2 and probably then give up on dragon's dogma.

i wish i could vote league for #1 almost every year, cos that'd be the truth

as such an ever changing game it's hard to think of a game that's brought me more joy than that

In the regular GOTY yes, it did, but not in the SteamGaf GOTY as it's never been on Steam before.

You have to respect Rockstars tactics of getting GTAV to be eligible for GOTY awards 3 years in a row.
Did dmc4 ever get any nominations in previous steamgaf goty votings tho :p

It's taking me forever to get a hang of XCOM. I've already switched back to Enemy Unknown on Steam because Enemy Within seemed more designed for people who knew what they were doing. It was throwing so much crazy stuff at me and I was just trying to learn how to play well. EU lacks some features, but at least I feel like I have a fighting chance. I'm starting to get some good tactics down but the game will still do stuff like drop a thin man right behind my sniper who so expertly scouted the map as we escorted a VIP to the evac site. So I'll adjust a bit more to prevent those situations.

The funny thing is the tutorial has you dashing all across the map totally spread out, which is basically the way to get your team murdered once the real missions start. Then of course in EW they add meld which is basically a big screw you to the people who are carefully moving around the map.

I started over a couple of times and I think I might start over once more and redo the tutorial because it really helps give you a good head start on your promotions before the real game starts.

EW adds a lot of counters to traditional strategies, like sniper camping. Meld gives a great reason to rush maps, whereas previously there was none. It's all about risk vs. reward.

Play with EW. You want mechs; we all do.

Edit: Oh and about learning the game: Don't worry about having perfect runs--XCOM is designed around loss and setbacks. Just get a difficulty that's fun and stick with it. Then, once you understand the game, consider pushing yourself to the limit with higher difficulties or even the ironman mode.

Not sure if there was a Steam GOTY awards back in 2008 when the original came out, but I do see your point.
Well the thing with dmc4se is that it adds 3 more playable characters with their own combat style that. alone imo makes it stand out from vanilla dmc4 and should make it eligable for voting.

Yeah it makes sense, if DMC4SE was eligible then Dark Souls 2 SOFTS and Divinity OS EE would be eligible too I would think. I could see it working either way, but ultimately it's up to jshackles.

Having a sniper camping in a sniper nest is still one of the best tactics with an assault that can rush the meld cannisters.
Only thing you need to have is squad sight.

Also I goddamn love the mechs, though in my curent game I'm like 4 months in without even building my first one.

Overwatch and hunker down should be anyones best friend if you're playing XCOM: EW.

I think the problem is, if concessions are made for one game there will be complaints about why can't concessions be made for these other games.

It sucks, but I can see the reasoning behind it. I'd like to be able to vote for some stuff that isn't eligible too, not just DoS:EE but it forces me to re-evaluate my list a bit more.

Tizoc's Old New Games of the Year Awards™ incoming.

Only remasters and rereleases please. The funny thing is that you could fill an entire list just from remasters and rereleases in 2015 lol.

You're spot on.

There's so many good decisions, from overwatch to the two movement system, that I'm kinda shocked more tactical games haven't looked to XCOM for inspiration. So many of them still fall into "wasted turn" traps (thinking mostly of Wasteland 2 non-EE and the Shadowrun series, which ape the combat without really understanding the systems.)

Is there anything like Rebel Galaxy out there, complexity wise, or is the jump always to super complex space sims?

XCOM 2 goes straight to the top of the play list! I'm super excited for it, I only played through Enemy Unknown about 15 times. lol. I generally agree with what you're saying, though there are special games now and then that you know you are going to want to play as soon as they release.

Enemy Within makes the game a lot longer, and harder in my experience. I don't really like the MECs in it, I always prefer to use the meld on gene mods. Anyway, going through Enemy Unknown first is the right move in my opinion. When you are in a mission, very rarely should you dash. Unless you know for certain that you won't trigger aliens, you have run & gun or have provoked aliens and need to get out of their line of sight, just stick within the blue move. High cover is way better than low and you should move accordingly. If you are in low cover, hunkering down (or whatever it is called) can be quite viable if you would be vulnerable to enemy fire.

You'll learn in time that the VIP missions always have Thin Men that drop, so you can be in better positions, ready with overwatch etc. I generally decline those missions, as they can be difficult early on. You probably don't want to be scouting with your Sniper either. Send an assault or support class ahead (or a rookie if you have one, as they are disposable).

*Besides the "cool factor" of the MECs, late game, they just don't have the same kind of power as a fully modded soldier. I'd take a sniper with Archangel armour anyday over a MEC. Mimetic Skin is insane on anyone too.

If all the countries pull out of the council does the game end? I lost a ton during my first attempt at EW. The loss and setbacks really seem like they can create a downward spiral. If you lose a high ranking officer you have to send a rookie out against advanced enemies, and you can start struggling with money and resources, etc.

I should clarify, this was a sniper doing overwatch on the rooftops. When on the ground I always keep the sniper in the rear.

To begin with, give up with trying to keep everyone in the council, you will have to prioritize which bonuses you want from the continents and use satellites and go on missions accordingly.

Second tip is rotating in rookies/squaddies in with your main squad on intermidiete/hard (not very hard) missions and then send your rookie squad with maybe one or two good troops on easy missions to level them up.

Please refer to the Complete Complexity Chart

COMPLETE COMPLEXITY CHART (Space Category)
LOWEST COMPLEXITY
2D Spacers (top-down, 2D flying through space. Pure arcade.)

3D Spacers (behind-the-back or cockpit view, 2D concept for space--like sailing! Highly arcadey.)

Quasi-3D Space Sims (cockpit view, complicated controls, but less so than true 3D space sims. A bit more of an arcadey or gamey feel.)

HIGHEST COMPLEXITY
3D Space Sims (You need a HOTAS, trackIR, and a personal cockpit for the full experience.)

(Note: The Complete Complexity Chart is currently in Early Access.)

In seriousness, maybe try Space Rangers HD or Tachyon: The Fringe (above) if you're looking for an accessible space game. I've heard very good things about the former, and I adore the latter. There's a lot out there, but it's been a pretty dead genre for the most part.
