Sins of the First Scholar doesn't count?

So Ultra SF4 wouldn't count? If so, none of the many Street Fighter games would count, only 2. Come on now

That's silly. Each version of Street Fighter would count, but not the various updates to those versions.

the one thing i believe to be really dumb is that first bulletpoint, to make it so that the games have to be released on steam

why not just make it released on pc, i feel like not being able to vote for starcraft or league of legends or battlefield (or whatever outside-of-steam game was released year) is pretty bad

Since this is the de facto PC thread, it does kinda make sense to include these.

I sort of agree, but it's not like you could vote for League anyway :p

yeah was just thinking out loud games outside of steam

minecraft, hearthstone, league, battlefront, starship citizen, titanfall, etc.

i wouldn't be able to vote for like ladykiller in a bind if it's not released on steam

i think it's a bad restriction

Yep, as I said I totally agree. I think it's worth discussing, at least for the future.
The only problem I see is that since this is the Steam thread, we don't usually attract the main Blizzard or whatever audience. That might make the results not representative for a general PC GOTY.

i don't think this is supposed to be the ultimate pc goty awards vote, it's just a list of this community's favorite pc games, so it's ok if it's not perfectly representative of all pc gamers but i also would feel really crappy if i can't vote for like ladykiller in a bind or sometimes always monsters just cos they're not on steam

Lethal League -- MB-965A66F97924116A - Taken by Saty

I've finally found Whoreson Junior in The Witcher 3.
Well, he's dead now.
One of the rare times I couldn't bring myself to spare someone in a game. I've probably helped looney Radovid but whatever. One monster at a time.

Well, to be fair, this is a steam thread.
Other than that, the big 3 consoles PS4/XB1/WiiU don't even have their own GOTY voting threads, let alone PC which is way less popular here on neogaf.

I actually remember buying this and installing it on my old compaq with XP on it. It was like 15$ or something like that hehe. It was a very barebones game but still fun for 10 hours or so. Could never find anyone online to play with. But yea it was one of those ehh type of games. Rise of Nations was the hot shit at the time so it never had a chance.

It's worth considering the idea of games external to the service, but I feel like it just wouldn't really work considering that we publicly release the results into the Gaming section once voting is completed. The idea of them being SteamGAF GOTY awards is that they represent what was released on the service. As much as it would pain me to not be able to give Queen Christine her rightful throne and scepter for yet another year, I think it would look strange to highlight games that aren't on Steam. In that way, it is a community event, but we're voting for the best software to represent what we're gathered together for.

There's also the Indie thread GOTY awards, which would cover a lot of titles that aren't available otherwise. The thread results are always pretty well mixed between games on different services.

Nice thing of a Steam release only quantity is as CheesecakeRecipe said, it's the representation of what someone can buy on Steam. As such, we can use it to help get more eyes on Steam itself and perhaps gain more people who normally only visit the Gaming section

So can I vote REmake or not?

Sure, it's the first time the game was on Steam. Though a part of me wishes the Windows release of the original game was just for completion's sake.

I have a hatred of ducks since I was attacked by some at Disney World when I was 9.

Aww.

Ducks are narcissists.
Never going close to one of them again.

Aww.

Duck is tasty

Ahhhhhhh!

i don't see what consoles have to do with anything

games outside of steam are talked about pretty regularly here, even console games

voting for console games is a pretty big stretch but the games outside of steam that would actually get votes are a handful and it feels weird and unnecessary to leave them out.

i get it that it's maybe too late to discuss this for 2015 but personally if i can't vote for ladykiller in a bind this year i'll just not vote here cos that rule is stupid

Squeenix closes cloud gaming company Shinra Technologies

Strife caused by lack of investors.

Shinra Technologies, the Square Enix cloud gaming company with a Final Fantasy name, is being dissolved. Liquidated. Which makes it sound like some kind of new year smoothie.

A notice was posted on the company's corporate site today. "A couple of wholly-owned subsidiaries of the company have decided to dissolve and liquidate, and as a result, the company will book an extraordinary loss," it read.

The two subsidiaries are Shinra Technology in New York (headquarters) and Shinra Technologies in Japan, and the extraordinary loss is approximately 2bn yen (£11.5m).

"[Shinra Technologies Inc.], as a cloud platform operator, has been trying to raise funds necessary for further business operations from third-party investors," Square Enix explained. "However, STI has found no prospective investors at this point, and therefore has to discontinue its business."

Shinra Technologies was announced at the Tokyo Game Show in autumn 2014. The idea was to have a virtual supercomputer be the motor for games being streamed as video over a cloud, which means you'd only need a device capable of video playback in order to play the games.

"Shinra Technologies Inc. is the next evolution of gaming," Square Enix boasted at the time. "Harnessing the power of a supercomputer in the cloud, Shinra creates a groundbreaking experience not possible with today's current gaming technology. Shinra is not just what's next. Shinra is the technological breakthrough that will propel the industry forward."

Yeah, I can't refute any of this.

If someone was willing to organize it maybe having a separate vote for best non-Steam game after we do the Steam voting would be worthwhile. I don't know how much interest it would drum up though.

i think chasing "bringing more people over" or overworrying about confusing people (maybe don't underestimate people?) is not worth not allowing people to vote for the actual games they liked. goty vote is not a service that the thread provides other, it's representing the interests of this particular group of people, and 2016 is overwatch and ladykiller in a bind and sometimes always monsters. if i can't vote for those three then i might as well not vote

I just hope people won't be afraid to vote for Nep Nep because of all bullying going on here all the time. Or should we call it leafying, perhaps?

I'll vote for Nep. I think we should all agree to only vote for Nep1 so we don't splinter the vote and the results actually show how much this thread loves NepNep. Unless you want to include all of the games, that's fine too.
Disappointment and buyers remorse.

It's so realistic.
I'm sorry

I managed to vote three times Nep in the regular GOTY vote, I will manage here. Especially since I prioritise in getting up to date with Iron-Blooded Orphans than with Undertale.

Unfortunately I can't vote for Nep myself, as I still haven't played V and 1, 2 before these were released on steam. I just want bullying not to work, and Nep is our (PC/steam) goddess after all

on totally unrelated note:
during this winter sale Trails sold about 30K and SC about 8K and now are at:

Trails:
Score rank: 86% Userscore: 93% Metascore: 85%
Owners: 169,777 ± 9,085

SC:
Score rank: 99% Userscore: 98% Metascore: 80% (lol)
Owners: 13,148 ± 2,529

close enough to 100%, I'd say

'If you liked Burnout and Black, you might like our first game', says Three Fields head

Former Criterion devs tease upcoming sports game.

Fans of Criterion's crash-heavy racer Burnout and destruction-focused shooter Black should keep an eye on Three Fields' upcoming sports game, the studio has said.

Teasing the game's imminent announcement on Twitter, Three Fields founder/director Alex Ward told fans: "If you liked #Burnout and you liked #BLACK then you might just like this first game we've made at @3FieldsEnt".

The game doesn't feature any cars or guns, though, Ward later clarified.

While the game isn't expected to be revealed until later this month, it's described by the studio as an "innovative... sports game that's fast, funny and heavy on social multiplayer". The game is due for release later this spring.

The studio's second game, meanwhile, will be a spiritual successor to Burnout 3 developed for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Support is also being considered for PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.

Three Fields Entertainment was opened by Ward and his former Criterion colleague Fiona Sperry back in 2014 following their exit from EA. The studio currently lists 9 members of staff on its website, the majority of which have previously worked at Criterion.

Criterion itself, meanwhile, is still hard at work on its new first-person extreme sports title.

What I mean is, we should be grateful that steamgaf got to vote their steam goty exclusively, while the other platforms don't have the same privilege. If it were PC goty voting, the others will ask for the same thing.

I tried to find out what's under my blanket and wanted to share with you.

You click a button to make ^this happen, and have to stop when someone approaches. If you manage to do this long enough your blanket starts to catch fire and the fire department arrives

MKiHLcV.gif

This was counted as a failure and made me stop playing. I did not find out what was under the blanket. I feel the game is worth the ~$1 that Man Puncher paid for it.

Here is my full 1 minute playthrough with audio

When I tried to close the game, the audio kept playing in the backround so I had to close the game in the task manager and found this.

I now have to reconsider my votes for GOTY

I can understand logging into a new browser and getting the age verification.

But the client surely should have this cached??

Leaky caches

Enhanced Steam lets you skip age verification automatically (that's a browser addon by jshackles, and a very useful one, might I add, if you didn't hear of it before, be sure to check it out).

Thanks, will look into it. I'm relatively new to Steam (despite the 7 years service badge) so haven't seen this before

I need to buy a new HDD, I can't handle all that porn without constantly deinstalling and reinstalling steam games. Just to be sure, I can use any modern HDD and just hammer it somewhere into my PC and it works. Or do I need to look for specific ones regarding the rest of my components I glued on the mainboard?
