As expected, Pewdiepie is doing a let's play of this. Don't like this guy too much but he certainly can boost sales and fame.

Nice, doing Sony's job for them

It was in the Metro review.
I would trust the rating board far more than a Metro review:

This is a survival-horror adventure game in which players help eight friends survive a serial killer at a mountain retreat. As players progress through the game, they explore the fully interactive environments, choosing a variety of action/decision-paths via on-screen prompts. Some choices can lead to depictions of intense violence and/or gore: characters shot in the head; characters cut in half by a saw blade; characters disemboweled or decapitated; a character forced to cut off segments of his fingers. Large blood-splatter effects occur frequently as characters are killed or injured; some sequences depict blood stains in the environment and around corpses. The game includes some sexual material: dialogue that contains sexual remarks (e.g., “Let's party like we're f**king porn stars and make this one trip we will never forget” and 'I mean if you're not gonna bang her...maybe Mike'll take up the case.”); a character looking at various sexual positions in a Kama Sutra book; a woman performing a striptease for a man, removing her clothes down to her undergarments. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “d*ck” are heard in dialogue.

Sony is doing their job. They are marketing the game and just so you know, sending copies to those Youtubers and Streamers is marketing ;)
Sending those copies is the bare minimum of marketing, a one man team can do that. Just don't see it being advertised much compared to something like The Order.

Or... are they just going to watch all of the videos and not buy the game?
Seeing as your decisions appear to actually have an impact, I see fewer people just watching it on YouTube compared to say a telltale game.

PewDiePie playing this is like an instant 1 million copies sold from his viewers alone. Massive win for the game! : )
Not really. All it'll do is get the attention of young people that likely would have ignored it. His viewers aren't likely to buy it. It's 60 bucks and is plot heavy compared to something like 5 nights at Freddie that is cheaper

One gained copy of someone would have have ignored it is one extra copy sold.

I could definitely see his let's play walkthrough adding some sales. Free advertising for Sony.

Speaking of sales, Until Dawn is at the moment #1 on Amazon.fr, #4 on Amazon.co.uk, #4 on Amazon.com (excluding PSN cards) and even in the top 10 on Amazon.jp

A few days ago, the game was much much lower, it seems like it's getting some late good momentum. Probably a combination of the good impressions, nice reviews and also a very decent advertising right now on Amazon.

Really hope the game will sell decently enough for Sony, Supermassive and also for the narrative genre in general.

Yep. This industry needs more survival horror games. It'd be a shame if it flopped like Alien Isolation.

You're both crazy if you think PewDiePie playing the game won't give the game a good boost in sales. The more exposure that spreads through social media the better.

I didn't say it won't. Still, I'd imagine a huge portion of let's play watchers will do just that, watch those videos.

You'd be surprised at how influential he can be. PewDiePie could play Sonic 2006 and people would go out in droves to pick up a copy. I don't remember the game he played, but after he streamed a few videos of it the company ended up producing more copies of the game because of the huge spike in sales.

As far as sales. I think this will crack a million before October. When the reviews hit in the UK, prices spiked and it jumped from being in the amazon top #100 to top #5

And this happened with every EU Amazon gaming chart. Support morphed into outright thirst. And the remarkable thing is that all happened within an hour. Across Amazon EU.

Top 30-50 day before release to a uniform top #5 across the board an hour later?

This is the point I was making earlier. The game had some traction in EU but nowhere near the momentum the positive reviews have given it. As well as jumping to the top 5 Amazon UK and France. Additionally Until Dawn also leapfrogged on Amazon Italy #5 Spain #4 Germany #4

For reference on amazon Germany Until Dawn's monthly position is #27 and even yesterday it was barley ever in the top 30 hourly. But then the reviews hit and we can expect it's monthly position to change considerably.

Strong EU support and this can could quite easily crack a million.

I'm not surprised by this. Even if a very small portion of viewers end up picking up the game, the percentage is probably just as good if not better than other forms of marketing.

Sending copies to streamers was a smart idea (and maybe bit of an experiment) on Sony's part.

Really psyched to play this game. Question for those who've gone through it:

I want to play this game with a couple of friends, does it seem like it'd be difficult to have me holding the controller and inputting the actions decided by 2 friends who will be watching along with me (4 characters for each friend)? Are there a lot of split second QTE's or are the QTE's usually a couple of seconds each?

Yeah, I think PDP covering it is a win for the game even if it doesn't add that much to sales. Any exposure is good (doing more than Sony is at least).

Why do people keep saying Sony isn't marketing it. I've seen ads for it online and on twitch. The PlayStation YouTube channel has been posting interactive trailers and new videos. Sony is the one who sent out all the copies to YouTube and twitch people. And apparently it even has TV ads. What do people want?

I've been reminded of this game's existence several times over the past couple weeks without trying.

Yep I dont get it.

Are you kidding? Of course The Order is going to have a larger marketing budget, it's a much larger budget game.

Also, lol at "one man team." Forget one man, you could do it in an hour, m i rite?

I think the problem is, that many people didn't really care for the game before, so they just ignored the marketing the last few weeks. Since gamescom (it was Sony's main game there) they really spammed trailers for it and tweeted about it almost every day.

Imo it's kind of sad that it now just started to get some more attention, just because of some good scores.
I hate the importance of scores nowadays...

I would say they started doing more stuff within the last week.
Also I meant more the pre-release marketing. They showed it only twice before release. Everyone kind of forgot about it (myself included).

Guess all marketing cannot be like Super Mario Maker though. Also too much marketing can be an issue (Destiny).

Truth bomb!

Yea, of course. It really helped Sunset Overdrive to sell millions of copys. ;)
Think that was more to do with the platform it was on. No doubt in my mind, especially earlier in the Gen SO would have sold much better with the PS audience. Until dawn also is hitting at a time where horror is making a comeback, a bit more trendy than Sunset Overdrive was.

I'd hardly call one of the game's central plot points (
Ethan's black outs
) going completely unexplained due to content being cut from the game a "minor" flaw. In a game where the plot and the actual gameplay are so closely intertwined, such an enormous plothole could arguably be described as 'game breaking' in a way imo.

I don't get why this is a big deal, I once gotten so drunk that I woke up sleeping in the dining room table having no idea how I got there, would you consider that a plot hole for my life? I just considered it a good saturday night. People that have blackouts don't remember what they did while in that state so why should the player have access to that knowledge when Ethan does not? At no point in the Game are you the player given knowledge that the character your playing as doesn't also recieve. In other words Ethan's episodes are just as much a mystery to him as they are to you. That's not a plot hole in my eyes.

My dear brazilians folks beware "forum uol" and "outerspace forum". xbox/nintendo fanboys are spamming spoilers of the game in title threads, mps, etc.

A week ago, I would have put $100 on a bet that this game would completely flop critically. Glad to see that it's being so well received. It seems like the perfect game to play with my girlfriend.

WTF are you talking about? Playstation Access did a quicklooks in June, July and August?

Playstation Access is their UK playstation Blog team, that cover and expose all these games on youtube. And post them on playstation Blog site.

Here's a video from E3 they did over 20 Minutes long in June

July Playstation Access

August 21st

Notice June and July have over 300,000 views. This is not including other publications which have similar coverage for June and July.

Add in the live action trailers sony has put out, and tv add's. It's a pretty decent Marketing campaign if you ask me.

IGN has a video from August with over a million views? SO I would say marketing is doing fine for a Niche game in a niche genre such as Horror.

UD's marketing is pretty solid, but sadly its clear as night and day that the lion share is coming from SCEE/XDEV. They actually care about their productions, so they usually put a lot of effort into marketing, same with Heavy Rain and other titles.

SCEA...not so much. I swear a dev either needs a flawless track record or the game has to be an absolute flagship title to get any attention from them.

For anyone with the game.. Is there an issue with the graphics?
It seems my copy runs at around 20 fps especially in cut scenes.. I expected a smoother looking game. I just started and I am staggered by this revelation. I expected at least a smooth experience like beyond heavy rain etc thoughts?

Maybe you should restart your ps4? Could be a memory leak, no?

The framerate definitely isn't stable, and it isn't your system. Restarting isn't going to help. Between the framerate and the audio issues, it's not the most polished game technically, but it's still really worth playing.

Gotta admit, I was quite down on this game due to the developer's lack of pedigree and the undercooked way in which Sony was showing off this game. I am very pleasantly surprised by all the good reviews, and the bits in the Giant Bomb quicklook seemed really entertaining.

Will probably pick up the game before MGS:V shows up.

I did the full restart. It actually runs better..not perfect like you said but way better. Originally it really looked like garbage! Lol
