I remember watching that cellphone/space movie/OVA a long while ago. It's kinda interesting how the studio evolved.

You're thinking of Voices of a Distant Star and yeah, it's been hugely evolved. Voices was made almost entire by Shinkai: written, drawnm and animated by himself on an Power Mac G4, voiced by himself and his then-girlfriend-later-wife (originally), music by a friend (Tenmon)...all over the course of seven months. That's a pretty amazing feat in and of itself.

Can anyone recommend a decent lossless video editor? Preferably one that isn't bloatware. Tried VirtualDub but nothing opens, after trying to get it working with various plugins.

Update: found a version of Avidemux that can handle single frame editing (2.5.6). In later versions this isn't supported.

I don't understand this. I don't see any of these webm gifs appearing on the forum. I just see a webm link that opens a new tab with a video file that I have to press play to load.

Am I meant to download something?

yeah, the addon in the OP. Hopefully GAF will support webm embedding in the future.

I'm familiar enough with Neil deGrasse Tyson, but why was that played on Fox?

I remade some classic gifs, while trying to keep a good balance between size and quality (peek signal to noise ratio ~40-50db, using -psnr option in ffmpeg)
Let me know if they work, some of them have audio.
Should I hardcode subtitles?

Nice ones. May as well add some more reactions both found and made.

Does anyone know an alternative to pomf.se? Videos often don't load for me anymore.

you can use avidemux if you want a graphical user interface to set start and end time, crop and hardcode subtitles among other filters.
In ffmpeg you can use
-vf "crop=640:256:16:32"
to crop to a 640x256 window, positioned 16 to the right and down 32 pixels from the top left edge.

Or
-vf "unsharp=5:5:0.5:4:4:0"
to sharpen the image, where 5:5 is the luma sharpening radius, 1 the strength (negative values to blur), and 4:4:0 are chroma sharpening radius and strength, respectively.
(use comma inside quotation marks to use multiple filters)
But recommend being careful with sharpening - ringing and aliasing artifacts destroy compression efficiency.
The reverse is also true - using FXAA or blur increases compression efficiency.
I recommend playing with -b:v, qmin and qmax until psnr - a objective quality measurement of compression - is in the range of 40-50db

example:

As you can see, 47.39db average PSNR, 4 second video, 800 kB size with audio. Pretty good.

Imgur should consider some limited support for them, similar to gfycat. At least that way it's more likely some of these clips will be around in the future. Right now it reminds me of the time those HD video sites popped up and were exciting before disappearing.

My first attempt at this. Beware of the spoilers if you haven't watched the GoT Season 4 premiere yet.

These crash Chromium for me. ('Aw, snap!' tab death.) Whether loading in hover mode with Imagus or in their own tab. Anyone else?
Can anyone let me know if this is working?

I'm trying to use Dropbox, but for some reason it destroyed the quality of the clip I was using. It's in HD when I play the original webm file in VLC.

Works grand for me in Chromium/Linux with just Imagus.

enabling webms + imagus/hoverzoom extension in chrome is god-tier

Came here to say this, GFYcat has been doing the hoverzoom thing for me for ages thanks to Imagus. I think it's a better solution than having them embed GIF-style (especially if shoulder surfers are a problem), although the sound can be shocking at times. :/

Let me know if they work (pomf.se webhost getting pretty bad)

Last one is busht for me, can only hear sound. Although I have an idea what GIF it might be based on that.

God dammit that third one always cracks me up. Every time. And I've seen it so many times.

Goddamnit, trying to create a WebM, with that 4chan program in the OP, but getting this error:

"Exception not handled in the application. Click on continue to ignore the error and to try and proceed. Click on Exit to stop the application immediately."

"Impossible to find the file "C: [output directory]".

The fuck does that mean? I can post the "Detail" thing, but it's pretty damn long.

Run the program as administrator or try saving to a different location.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Most of these aren't working for me, I'm only able to see Gravelord_Nito's black and white thing and bikini girl, and JBourne's Spider-Man clip. Anybody know why that might be?

Oh shit, that's impressive. I need to get onto that Shinkai train after seeing 5 cm Per Second and Children Who Chase Lost Voices.

Haven't really checked this over in the last few weeks but has there been a way to get the WebM's to play in Safari on Mac OSX? Or it still only works in Chrome on OS X like before?

Despite my earlier posts about GIF vs. WebM, I find myself just making WebM's these days. Rarely GIFs anymore.

The times, they are a-changin'. Hopefully the forums I visit follow suit. Yeah, I'm looking at you, NeoGAF admins.

are there alts to pomf that can handle over 15 seconds?

I've uploaded several that are over 15 seconds. If you're finding you hit the 50MB limit it's a good sign to optimize the encoding settings.

Some alternative hosts: Webmup.com, Mediacru.sh, GfyCat, Puu.sh (apparently, requires sign up though).
