EDGE: Sony’s VR tech will be revealed at GDC

Don't know if it has been posted, but Hip Hop gamer has some pretty specific information on Sony's VR HMD... OFC these are all unconfirmed!

Hmm. His claims are all over the map -- suggests it's 720p or 1080p "when you have the headset on" (what?), suggests it's wireless (really?) and then goes on to make some largely incoherent comments about Kinect and Oculus Rift.

wireless makes a lot of sense. I mean, the latest HMZ from Sony is wireless, and Oculus have stated that wireless is the goal for the future (though probably not there in the first model). he said you'd have the option of 720p or 1080p, which could be two SKUs. I like HHG. He's enthusiastic, and generally on the ball about things, although he doesn't generally have inside information.

MAN I hope they actually reveal it at GDC. I RRREEAALLLLLYYYYY want them too.

All I need is to just, know that it exist. I dont need a picture, price, release date, specs, games supporting it, nothing. Just KNOWING that sony has comfirmed they are making a VR headset for the PS4 is good enough for me.

All they need to do is go up on stage and be like "were making a VR headset for PS4" and walk off stage. I'd flip my shit in excitement.

I need something to get excited about!!! Need that volt of energy and excitement. Gives me something to be looking forward to in the gaming industry. Gives me something to be happy about, make me feel like a kid again knowing about the new N64 coming out. Be able to talk on many sites about it, reading all the floating ideas and read lots of articles about it.

I LOVE tat feeling of being excited about, and looking forward to something.

Im looking forward to the experiences that only VR can bring. Cant wait to strap that bad boy on and be IN the game like the guys who were playing sword art online.

SO EXCITE!!!!!

Just spotted this. He's a Driveclub dev I think. Maybe they will show some new gameplay with the VR headset? Wasn't there a rumour going around about Driveclub doing something with VR?

Or maybe I jumped the gun. Either way I'm looking forward to this week.

I'm assuming many here have experienced VR before as they seem so excited so I'd like to ask, what exactly is so awesome about VR?

Even if game has shitty visuals, the sense of "being there" is undeniable. Sense of immersion is so high that people start believing they are inside VR space, its truly drastically different than any form of entertainer we had so far. As Carmack said Oculus Rift is "deeply, fundamentally cool". That is true even for shitty 1st version of devkit Oculus Rift that has very lowres screen and not perfect headtracking.

Sony also have a second session very likely related:

Creating Unique Interactive Experiences with the PlayStation4 (Presented by Sony Computer Entertainment America)

Date: Wednesday, March 19
Time: 12:30pm-1:30pm

This presentation will explore the technical capabilities and new features of the PlayStation® 4's new input devices. We will discuss the DualShock® 4 controller, PlayStation® Eye camera, PlayStation® move, PlayStation™ mobile app, and the new interactive services available during live gameplay streaming. All of these devices and services can be used together to create new interactive experiences that are easy to create and share with the PS4.
Takeaway
Attendees will leave the presentation with a better understanding of some of the new and exciting features that are available to developers to make their PS4 games stand out from the rest.

I'm in cautious optimism mode and hoping for:

1. Good ergonomics (ditch the HMZ design, make it comfortable, etc)
2. A decent price. $300? Okay. $400? Now it's as much as the console it's being sold for... $500? Forget about it.
3. PC compatibility. Segmenting it off to just Playstation 4 content is going to leave me out in the cold. I have a PS4, but I'm not buying two VR devices (one for PC and one for PS4). I absolutely want to be able to play games that won't come to the PS4. If they need to issue PC drivers for their camera (if they happen to use the camera for tracking), so be it.

Edit: The PS4 camera is a proprietary port? That really blows :/

Shouldn't hackers be able to get creative even if Sony decides to make the VR headset only compatible with PS4? There aren't any proprietary ports left on the console.

The camera port is, and you almost certainly need the camera.

People will get it working no doubt, but without official support, they can't have APIs put in engines or anything, it'd be a lot of work to add support, and pointless given the Rift.

PS4 does not need to use any new port.
- small HDMI dongle for that houses tech for Wireless HD [including HDMI passtrough so that untouched data can continue moving to HDTV]
- WiFi/BT module on VR headset for transfer of on-board orientation data from sensors + same audio/mic streaming like DS4
- PS4 camera continues using its own AUX port
- Move controllers use BT, same as DS4

As for PC homebrew... who knows. If Sony uses HDMI dongle with encrypted tech, its not gonna be easy cracking that.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Camera necessity already eliminates the chance of the headset using that port.

But yeah, I can see why it'd be a pain to get it to properly function when an easier-to-work-with alternative is available.

What if the VR Headset uses the PS Camera (in combination with lightbulbs) for head tracking? What if it's the only way of doing head tracking? Why would anyone want a VR headset on a PC that can't do head movement/tracking because it requires the PS Camera which, AFAIK, has not been cracked to work on a PC yet.

Sony can't possibly be thinking of revealing VR at GDC and not showing us. This isn't being handed it in a studio, everything is going to leak, an NDA isn't going to stop it.

I think they will show us, but will do it in a controlled fashion through official materials. They're probably either worried about technical hiccups embarrassing them if broadcast to the world, or their PR people haven't quite managed to work out how to present this in the best way, to best communicate the experience from a stage to an observer, and so marketing have enforced that ban.

But no, this is otherwise an open session, anything they say here will be public, so I have no doubt they'll have their own official materials to go out alongside this. Whether they have a design yet that they want to show publicly in official photos and renders is another matter, but the other info and confirmation of its existence and an outline of the vision will come out officially. And maybe a more polished pr video about their VR.

Excellent.

This is happening.

People will probably still be able to tweet stuff I suppose.

But that sucks

Maybe they already have some shiny PR pics and videos ready to show off to us? Yeah probably not, but I feared this would happen, at least tell us it's real and give us some specs to chew on.

Edit: gofreak said it earlier and better!

Have a fun! Enjoy!
No filming sad.

They might have given some media outlets exclusive filming allowance or they might want to do the filming themselves. Or they already did the filming in another place and will deploy on the PS Blog when the time comes. Or something.

They are now more interested in gathering dev support.

Full public unveil will probably be moved to E3, device look, software lineup, price, release date.

"Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment" - vague hint at the reworked Drive Club using the VR headset. Would explain the extensive delay too wouldnt it?

Excellent.

Just my speculation :p But if you are looking for Sony to publicly confirm/announce this thing, I've no doubt that will happen. What we get beyond that might be up in the air.

I think marketing could be wary of a couple of things at this point about third party filming of this. For example if there's a demo and a video feed showing what the user can see, that will be going up through a projector and adding lots of latency vs what the user is actually seeing - and they probably don't want people analysing and gif-ing stuff like that to come to premature conclusions about latency. If there are other camera-based things being demoed they probably want to avoid the possibility of Kinect-like stage fright going out to the world. They have a lot less control over the technical environment in a session like this than they would even at E3. Of course, any and all hiccups will be reported by attendees here anyway, but these are things Sony can explain to that audience, which is a lot more manageable than having vids and gifs flood the web.

If Sony are willing to publicly announce this session as part of the GDC schedule, I would like to believe the content would not be NDA'd.
