Just in case they weren't already aware I let them know the hype train for this presentation is running at full speed.
Where is that old gif. Oh yes here it is:
Oculus have already dismissed the idea of the Rift on consoles.
Fully agree with that, would just allow for so much more to be done with it.
Oculus have already dismissed the idea of the Rift on consoles.
When you lie about something like that, you say don't saying things like "they're too limited", you say "that would be interesting, but we're not pursing a collaboration at this time" or whatever.Since when have these people (I mean people in the gaming business) ever been totally truthful if we guess their strategy?
Grab your drink without having to remove it and?
While technologically pretty impressive AR stuff seems gimmicky at best to me. See little critters fight on your coffee table! Woopee dee fucking doo. I think really effective AR experiences are still pretty far away.
I sure am ready to be proven wrong though!
When is the Sony GDC conference UK time ?, thanks.
My virtual body is ready!

Sony's conference is called "Driving the future of Innovation" so obviously they will be showing Driveclub using the VR.
Any live streams?
Any live streams?
Thanks for this, much appreciated!
Do you know if any of them will be live streamed (apologies in advance if I should know that already)?
Wowzers. That is pretty fucked up.
I wonder what's causing that. I suppose it could be related to the fact that the lightbar isn't as easy to track as the sphere, but I'm more inclined to think it's just a bug in Playroom, especially since it didn't correct itself once it regained sight of the marker. Even if the lightbar is harder to track accurately, I wouldn't think it would get that fucked up. That's just weird. =/
Has there been any actual confirmation of them using the stereo camera to improve z accuracy? I know that on the PS3, they were getting sub-mm accuracy on x and y, but only sub-cm on z. I was thinking the stereo camera could improve z, but I wasn't sure how much, and if it would be worth the extra computational effort, or if they'd instead just rely on the increased resolution of the camera to improve z accuracy.
No vault recording. However, it will surely be recorded and it will be up at GDCVault.com after the conference.
Not for the sony one. There might be live blogs from gamespot/polygon.Do we actually know there won't be a stream? Or is everyone still basing it on Shu's ambiguous reply to an incorrectly titled question?

Creating BioShock's Elizabeth
Who: Shawn Robertson | Animation Director, Irrational Games
When: 2:30PM-3:30PM PST
What: Behind the critical success of BioShock Infinite is the game's heart and soul, Elizabeth. Not only did Elizabeth carry the narrative weight of BioShock Infinite on her shoulders, she was also a robust AI that allowed for many systemic interactions. The creation of Elizabeth was an organic process that evolved over time and included members from every department at Irrational. This presentation will go over some of the decisions we made and the lessons we learned as we gave shape to Elizabeth and attempted to bring her to life. With a focus on animation, Shawn will talk about the various systemic and narrative techniques that we used on Elizabeth, and give practical examples of how they worked within the game. He will touch upon how a character like Elizabeth needs art, narrative and systems working together to create the illusion of humanity.
Lucasfilm Studio Postmortem
Who:
Steve Arnold | Co-Founder- Emeritus, Polaris Partners
Noah Falstein | Chief Game Designer, Google
David Fox | Director/Game Designer, Electric Eggplant
Ron Gilbert | Game Designer, Independent
Peter Langston | Cooperative Resercher/Co-Director/Arts and Technology Hacker, Apple Advanced Computation Group
Chip Morningstar | Principal Architect, PayPal
When: 10:00AM-11:00AM PST
What: Before LucasArts, there was Lucasfilm Games. From a small startup within a medium-sized (and very famous) film company, this group grew from 1982 to 1990 to become one of the most popular game companies of its day. It then morphed (a Lucasfilm term!) into LucasArts, which was acquired by Disney, and then shut down shortly after GDC 2012. In the early days, the company was known for experimentation, with early multiplayer (Ballblazer), first-person games (Rescue on Fractalus, Koronis Rift), the first MMO (Habitat/Club Caribe), and of course, some well-loved graphic adventures (Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, The Secret of Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and more). This postmortem asks the questions, "What mix of creative and business forces shaped this early success story?" and "Could this kind of company be duplicated today?"
No vault recording.

Sony's conference is called "Driving the future of Innovation" so obviously they will be showing Driveclub using the VR.
Man, after all this buildup it would be a real disappointment if no VR was shown after all.
It might be shown, just not publicly.
It might be shown, just not publicly.
I don't know if it is VR related (but could be), as it may be assumed that Media Molecule will show something at GDC, at least that is my bet.
The reasons for this assumption:
1. Both Alex Evans and Marcos Healey, co-founders of MM, went there
2. Alex Evans recently had a baby, and I doubt he would go with all the trouble of taking this trip just for having networking opportunities, as other people in the company can do that also. Furthermore, they will be there just till Wednesday, so again why do this apparently troublesome trip if not for some higher purpose
3. It is the ideal type of gaming experience (UGC) to be presented here, just like LBP was revealed for the first time at GDC.
Looks like they're going to roll it out to devs and the only way we'll hear about it is second hand reports. I wonder if they're planning on a massive blowout for it publicly at E3.
While they demoed Move at E3, it was officially announced at GDC, as was Home, and LBP, and MGS5 last year. We get major announcements at GDC.Which is what will happen if anything at all. I would expect them to unveil something like this publicly at a big event like E3
So stoked! Here's all the interesting VR stuff (all times PST)

Oh and Friday is an open show floor, so you might here interesting stuff then
Fixed that for you.
Oculus have already dismissed the idea of the Rift on consoles.
And before that they bigged up the idea that they would get to support the consoles. Not that I think it matters, whatever talks they had fell through, its not happening.
Yeah, probably just going to be more Playstation Now stuff
Oh, while you're here, I'm sure you won't mind a softball...Exactly. They (Palmer Luckey) wanted to go alone.
Well, I asked him specifically about getting footage of the presentation he was giving with Rick and Anton, and his reply was, "I hope someone is video recording it. It will be an interesting session."Do we actually know there won't be a stream? Or is everyone still basing it on Shu's ambiguous reply to an incorrectly titled question?
I wouldn't be surprised. It could still be cool stuff too, but people are so laser focused on this VR rumor that anything but that will seem like a disappointment. We'll see what happens.
How do you know they're only there til Wednesday?
That is pretty suspicious if true!
Probably means the session will be, ya know...Well, I asked him specifically about getting footage of the presentation he was giving with Rick and Anton, and his reply was, "I hope someone is video recording it. It will be an interesting session."
So, yeah. Whatever that means. =/
