EDGE: Sony’s VR tech will be revealed at GDC

Just my speculation :p But if you are looking for Sony to publicly confirm/announce this thing, I've no doubt that will happen. What we get beyond that might be up in the air.
Yeah, I don't care beyond the confirmation. I do think we'll get the specs, and that's cool, but stuff like software support can wait till E3, outside of surprises, you can make a pretty educated guess about that stuff.

Sort of reinforces that it's SCE marketing/pr that's nervous about filming, perhaps. Or maybe they will record and edit their own video and release that. Which would be better than nothing!

This also reinforces the news that there will be no livestreams. We will maybe get video later, if someone gets all permissions.

Anything more than 250$, I won't care for it

$250 for base model is doable. But that is without camera and move controllers.

I dislike PR just as much as I do HR.

I'm gonna repost from the 'Sony to integrate...' thread...

I'll be surprised to see a consumer unit this side of Xmas, and I'd be very surprised to see this launched as a 'big bang' type of deal. Unless MS announce something solid, there's no pressure on Sony to rush this out, or to have to unveil it as a second coming of entertainment.

Long lead time to a soft launch for interested buyers, coupled with dedicated VR demo retail units in Sony stores and pop-up stores in malls & other shopping centre type places. Couple this with a strong line up of well made experiential bits of software & games written well within the PS4's capacity to render the necessary FPS, resolution and AA solution comfortably.

Anyone expecting KZSF or a million sales out of the gate is crazy - I am certain that Sony know as well as OR that this has to 'work' properly. Equally, I'm certain that Sony see this as a way of potentially making PS4 another Wii by attracting an audience that will have far lower expectations and thus be more likely to be 'wowed' by relatively simple VR environment in terms of art styles.

Me? I'm eagerly awaiting a VR version of the Mars Orbiter Global Survey 3D map and to toddle off flying over Mars, around Olympus Mons and down through the Valles Marineris all the while pretending I'm Dr Manhattan in his glass clockwork palace.

To add - this is for developers. I can completely understand why Sony PR might be nervous about how this is communicated to the outside world, since it may very much be the case that non-specialists won't get what's going on and say 'POS, forget it.'.

Kinda weird that he "hopes" someone is recording it, especially since no one else is allowed, including GDC themselves. Shu may just not be aware of the details though. Just in case, I responded to him and pointed out that it sounded like it'd be Sony or nobody though.

Also, yay, Shu responded to me!! \o/

What did he say?

They could just literally be lying. Like the 'we'll announce after Xbox' thing.

I'm not one for 'where there's smoke, there's fire' concept, but this isn't smoke, it's burning embers.

Just in case they weren't already aware I let them know the hype train for this presentation is running at full speed.

Where is that old gif. Oh yes here it is:

If Sony's VR Kit does 1080 and it's under $500 (considering $1000 for the HMZ headsets), it would go mainstream instantly. Please Sony if you're indeed working on such a head mounted display, please please price it under 500

Please check this video of mine I took for you.

http://youtu.be/GFc5nwaon5k

Notice how:

1) During the first seconds of the clip, the tip of the cone loses alignement with the center of the lightbar as you push the controller towards the PS4 camera. Then it re-alignes as you pull it backwards. Not a big deal but definitely not a Move-like behaviour. I'm not sure why this occurs. Perhaps it's due to the fact that depth tracking is executed using stereo data provided by the camera rather than by measuring the size of the lightbar.

2) The rest of the video shows how (badly) you can fuck up the tracking in a matter of seconds. Of course, it doesn't get *that* bad during normal play, but you can tell the tracking is accumulating errors over time. And it doesn't dynamically "auto-fix" (which the PS Move tech does).

Of course it's better than Wiimote+ (which is limited by the narrow FOV of its camera - had it been 180° it would be closer) but it's nowhere near the PlayStation Move IMO.
Wowzers. That is pretty fucked up.

I wonder what's causing that. I suppose it could be related to the fact that the lightbar isn't as easy to track as the sphere, but I'm more inclined to think it's just a bug in Playroom, especially since it didn't correct itself once it regained sight of the marker. Even if the lightbar is harder to track accurately, I wouldn't think it would get that fucked up. That's just weird. =/

Has there been any actual confirmation of them using the stereo camera to improve z accuracy? I know that on the PS3, they were getting sub-mm accuracy on x and y, but only sub-cm on z. I was thinking the stereo camera could improve z, but I wasn't sure how much, and if it would be worth the extra computational effort, or if they'd instead just rely on the increased resolution of the camera to improve z accuracy.

I was just thinking about the no-filming policy for the presentation. It's GDC, not E3. It's not going to be spiced up for a general audience. It's a presentation for devs. As such, livestreaming the full unedited presentation would probably be pretty dry and boring for the average customer. Not a way you want to introduce such an important new product to the world. I think Sony will be recording it themselves, then use edited footage of it along with other prepared media for public consumption. Just a guess.

:lol

Spectacular train wreck or revolutionary new tech reveal. Both outcomes excite me equally.

No filming sad.

I worked at GDC before as a CA, and GDC owns the rights to filming presentations presented at the conference. I've never seen a case where companies were allowed to film their own presentation (outside of a keynote).

However, it will surely be recorded and it will be up at GDCVault.com after the conference.

*Edit* Also, that GDC page mentions new technologies for AR.

http://us.playstation.com/develop/gdc-2014/booth-features/#cutting

Cutting edge AR technology for PlayStation®

Introducing new features of the PlayStation® AR library and practical demonstration using PS4™ and PS Vita.

I still think Sony is going for VR and not pushing AR as much, and this is probably about AR tech used in PlayRoom and things like that. Still, seemed relevant.

If there won't be anything regarding VR they have done a terrible job by not shutting down the rumors.

edit: Please don't be AR or just another overpriced HMD.

Could be that sony hmd demoed in japan last year that had a camera on the front for ar experiences that were said to be very good. A dual ar/vr headset could set it apart from rift
I always expected the rift to come with two front facing cameras, seems like a no brainier to me.
