'The Last of Us: Remastered' coming to PS4, July 2014, [1080p, targeting 60 fps]

I'm guessing the main reason ND is doing this Remaster in house is so they can get proper documentation prepared for other studios doing PS3 to PS4 ports.

That's a possibility. Let's hope so. I bet the port of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would be a great showcase of their remastering ability.

Imagine it looking like how UC4 looks.

That's like imagining Half-life in Source 2.

So....

SP = 30 fps
MP = 60 fps

Also in Portugal and much cheaper, I posted the link at the top of the previous page. I don't know if they do international shipping though.

Edit: Spain too it seems. Seems to be exclusive to one store in each country.
I don't have a PS4 yet but I need that steelbook.

Is it possible to change the VO? I would prefer to listen to Troy and Ashley (as well as Nolan)

Were the problems with 60FPS on TLoU mainly because of the PS3 architecture or because of the PS4 power? I ask because they are targeting 60FPS with UC4 as well.

60fps all along? I'm so tempted to revisit it now. Moreso knowing I missed the DLCs. PS4 will be on my Christmas list :) (my wife will ask for divorce at one point, but oh well :)

Ps3 architecture. The Last Of Us was heavily optimized for Cell and Ps3s SPUs. I'm sure a lot of code had to be rewritten for it to run on Ps4.
Like someone from NaughtyDog said some time ago: It took months to even get something on screen.

Wow, missed this game on the ps3 but now, as a proud ps4 owner, I m definitely tempted to pick this up. Is the MP cool? I ve seen a lot of people praising it. What is it all about? I m approaching this game from the dark side of mp gaming ( console cod and bf).

a bit offtopic but will this hard work on the TLOU Remaster help the inevitable Uncharted collection? TLOU and Uncharted basically shared the same engine right?

It's an extension of the single player game mode in the sense that it takes the core of the single player gameplay experience and tries it's best to replicate that in a multiplayer setting. The goal of factions is to basically earn supplies by playing the different game modes, the more supplies you earn (think of supplies as points), the larger your faction gets, and the longer you survive. The goal of the factions metagame is to survive through 12 weeks (in game time).

So from a gameplay standpoint, elements of stealth, crafting weapons, setting traps and trying to earn supplies by scoring points through completing objectives and killing enemies from the opposite faction are present. It's slow and methodical, run and gun lone wolf style gameplay is usually ineffective against a team that works well together and communicates.

There are perks, weapons and perks are limited by loadout points, different weapons and gear, so those aspects should be familiar to you. You can alsao 'purchase' in game gear like armor and bullets along with weapon upgrades through the supply points you earned.

Yeah, it's dubbed but the english voices are in there. I bought the PS3 version here in Portugal and it had both dubs. Would be a crime to play this game with another dub.

TOTALLY agree with the soap opera effect.

60fps always makes films look low rent or like they are being broadcast live.

It's weird that I have that association and with enough years of videogames in 60fps, that could be changed - but it's an institution of film to run at a lower frame-rate and there is something genuine and real to that idea. Even if it's totally adverse to bring that standard across to video games, unfortunately it's still motion picture and my mind parses the visuals on the TV in the same way.

precisely my point

I was asking because I think I've read in a Portuguese gaming facebook group that people were having some problems with Infamous Second Son regarding that subject

Probably different staff. They changed a lot from PS2 to PS4. Not to mention that they had to sacrifice that framerate due the PS3's radical change of architecture.
I think it's kind of the first time they can seemingly have their cake and eat it. PS1 was at a significant technical disadvantage to the N64, and Sony was so dedicated to pushing richer 3D rendering that almost nothing had the luxury of being 60, in fact, right now the only 3D PS1 game I can think of that was 60 was Omega Boost, there must be more, but they were rare. Then in the PS2 era ND were doing the Mario 64 thing, later with a little GTA in there, very impressive to have them running at 60, but in that sense it was also dictated by the tastes at the time, it was the PS3 and the jump to more graphically demanding visual presentations that forced almost the entire industry to target 30.

Before the new consoles were announced, there was a lot of discussion and fairly heated debate surrounding what developers would do with this new found huge GPU performance, some seemed to think basically PS3 games in 1080p/60fps, some thought really graphically rich visuals at 720p/30fps. I always imagined a mix, that 1080p would be standard, because scaling artifacts are hideous, but certainly still mostly 30. I don't know that anyone really thought we could have 1080p/60fps and a very significant graphical leap, it's why that UC4 trailer being real was so hard for people to believe, it fells like you're seeing no compromises, for the first time.

They'd have to be very careful, I realise that but there are (like I said) a couple of locations that wouldn't effect the spike in difficulty but rather your need to be more careful:

The darkened area where you get your first Molotov, and the area just before the hospital that has three bloaters in it. This would make the difficulty spikes slightly harder but it wouldn't change the shape of the game.

I'm not disputing the fact that it would be cool if they made gameplay changes, I'm just saying that Druckmann implied that the changes will only be cosmetic.

After playing sniper elite on the ps4 im hoping naughty dog are considering 3d for the last of us cause the hardware is def more capable. Uncharted 3 was decent on the ps3 so BRING IT

Dear Naughty Dog,

Do what you just did to the engine and please port Uncharted Trilogy. God knows it'll be great for Uncharted 4, and it'll give me something to play with while I wait for Uncharted 4. Seriously, I want to play that series in 1080p/60fps! That cinematic 24fps is jarring.

Surprised they're not countering Halo ports with Uncharted ports.

Well according to a Dutch journalist Nolan North let slipped at E3 that an Uncharted Collection will be released.

Kinda crazy they have kept the new gameplay so secret or are they even done to even show it?.

I assume they want no framerate issues and make it 75fps.

The lady was working it make it Beyond 60fps

thus it always stays at 60fps, if it dips from 70fps
It won't draw more than 60fps though. The PS4 can only output 60, if you're drawing beyond that, you'll get screentearing, which is hideous. What I imagine she means is they were optimizing for a sub-16ms pipeline so more demanding frames are still less likely to miss their budget.

nd people saying their game is amazing. is this like the playstation blog not saying bad things about ps4 games? haha

just seems odd all the self fellating. do developers often comment on the quality of their own games like this?

Who would even make this? I can't imagine that ND are going to want to put Uncharted 4 aside so they can work on another PS3>PS4 game. Are they going to outsource this one now that they can show/explain to another studio how to do it?

ND would not make it. There are amazing port houses out there

This game is already critically acclaimed, so they can be confident that an upgraded PS4 version will be amazing.

They do when they're proud of what they've worked on.

Movies are shot at 24fps, so to output @60fps or more is just wrong and fake...

Videogames are not "shot" at all, they are created from scratch. So any frame-rate the developer chooses is technically right...

Very good news.Haven't played the trilogy yet so would look forward to it. Hope they are good ports.

Going to be years since I've played a new ND game. So excited but sucks its released on my first day of semester. This is the game that's making me get the PS4 too.

Yeah, it's pathetic.

They can't say:

"Ehy, this port just sucks, don,'t buy it".

And yet, no gameplay video at all, release next month :S

Why would they spoil the game for people who haven't played? They know the week after release, Digital Foundry will do a side by side anyway.

I don't think it'll be the prolific upgrade that GTAV was (because that was always destined to be an improved PC port) but it'll look really good.

Please don't quote the word "shot" as if I ever said it. I know it's not film.

And you're missing the point. The point is not what is technically possible in any of these mediums, the point is standards have been established and there's a visual language to movies and TV that are distinct from one another and far deeper ingrained than visual language in games at the moment.

So when I see something in 60fps it reminds me of live sports or soap operas.

An UC Collection would almost certainly be outsourced. The idea of going back to a Remaster Collection quality port after TLoU is kind of lame though. Having all the cutscenes rerendered and stuff is really nice. I wouldn't buy it anyway, UC2 is the only really good one, but it'll probably be the case for any other Remasters we get this generation that used prerendered cutscenes. It was really bad in the GoW Collection. Capacity is a serious issue too. UC1, 2 and 3 wouldn't nearly fit on a single BRD.

Turn 10 does the same thing, though their games never meet the same critical reception, if that's the answer you're looking for. I would like to point out that it is normal for project leads to show appreciation to their employees for putting in a lot of hard work to achieve goals. The fact that you think this is a point of contention says a lot about you. They already know the game is good (200 Game of the Year awards and all that), so it should be obvious what they're proud of.

Not all movies are shot at 24fps.

The Hobbit movies are shot at 48fps. If you suffer the misfortune of having to watch them at that framerate, the look like they are filmed on a TV set.

I already have this preordered and really looking forward to play it for the first time but I kinda find the hype to be ridiculous. Ok we get it, it's 60 fps. Like anyone was expecting anything less...
Prefer the approach Rockstar are taking, just showed a beautiful trailer and not tweeting how their game is amazing, crunch this, etc...
