I'll accept him as a replacement to Grey Fox even though his games haven't been on a Nintendo system yet.

TECHNICALLY (and this is a big technically) Raiden's first appearance was on a nintendo console. MGS: Ghost Babel for the Gameboy has a VR Training mode, the end of which congratulates "Jack". This makes Raiden's first appearance on the gameboy.

Right... you misunderstood my post. In Smash 64 and Melee, the symbol for the Metroid series was the screw attack. After the Samus symbol was created (I guess in Prime?), the symbol for the Metroid series changed from the screw attack to the Samus symbol.

The "Samus Symbol" was in super metroid.

Interesting! I wonder why they didn't switch it until after Melee then. Maybe it wasn't iconic enough until after Prime started using it? The color part really makes it clear that it's supposed to be Samus too. Maybe Sakurai thought it wouldn't show up again?

Dunno

*shrug*

It's definitely the samus, and by proxy, the 'metroid' symbol for smash bros. If ridley's playable, It'll likely be his symbol, in the same way that bowser's symbol is the same as mario's.

Oh definitely. I think my favorite is how 3 of the 4 Fire Emblem characters have nothing to do with the logo. Either that or Mega Man.

Sorry Beelzebufo, I was acting like a prick.

Nah man, it's cool! It wasn't really worth me arguing about in the first place, that's my bad haha.

I pre-ordered the $99 Wii U bundle today and decided that I could reward myself by watching a match (I hadn't seen the game in action yet).

Yes. Yesssssss. So hype now.

i mean i don't see why it would be the mega man series icon but... uh... there are indeed cogs in the series

not going for a silhouette of the helmet is odd (edit: oh duh or an e tank)

It's definitely just a cog because he's a robot, and not because it has any particular meaning in the MM series.

But you know, aside from maybe the 1-Up icon (Mega Man's face) or an E-tank, I'm not really sure what would be the best representation for the series!

A helmet would be sweet. Like the Sonic head and pac head

E Tank sounds great. But yeah, that's just a cog...because he's a robot.

If Sukapon gets in he should totally have the same icon as Mega Man. Heck, if Chibi-Robo gets in they should all share the generic cog. Because robots!

Whoever decided the cog was a good idea was clearly slacking. I keep hoping that it will change in the final release but there's basically zero chance of that at this point.
Gotta wait for Project M4 to change it to an appropriate icon I s'ppose.

I'm sure they tried to use the helmet as a symbol but the found the shape too complicated to fit the simplistic nature of the icons. At least to the point where simplifying it further lost iconability or even being recognizable.

Then again, even an E tank would have suffice.

It doesn't match the gears in that stage though. :/ It's close, but no cigar.

I've seen some good, simplified helmet designs for his logo and they definitely work. NO more complicated than what other people use.

When we can have The Blue Marble as the Mother icon I can't imagine Mega Man's helmet would've been too complicated.

Either Capcom's rebooting the series secretly and using that as a logo (lol), or someone cheaped out on giving him an icon.

It's part of the original Mother's box art.

The E Tank would have no context as a series logo — it’s just a block with the letter E on it. The Donkey Kong and Metroid logos contain letters, but they actually stand for the characters they’re representing — “E” is for energy, and it’s just a generic health recovery item. It would be like representing the Pokémon series with a potion bottle.

The helmet could work, but none of the other suggestions are any better than the random cog, honestly.

That could represent Capcom as a company, but it didn't originate in Mega Man, so it'd be a really poor indicator of that series in particular.
