Pokemon TCG headed to iPad

My question is why the fuck this isn't on Wii U?

It's not a Nintendo game, and to be honest, a lot of people would be appalled if they assumed it was by Nintendo, and then saw how far below the quality bar the game is compared to Nintendo's usual stuff:

"Oh god, where's the C&D letter from Nintendo on this blatant ripoff?"

Not a bad idea to be honest. It's not a bad game by any means, just a pretty standard card game replication.

You can also get a free pack of cards in the game when you buy a real one so you can end up getting a bunch of different cards for your online deck.

It is a Nintendo game.
You'll notice that Nintendo's credited on the site.

Oh, it's indeed an eyesore. Plus it's nothing like the GBC game, right? I'm kind of de-hyping now.

It's not a bad game (other than it being very buggy, at least when I played it), and the idea that you can get boosters in the game if you buy the physical boosters is cool (but don't do that unless you care to play the physical game)- and it's also a step ahead of MTG in that regard.

But I think a lot of people on GAF are probably endeared by the Pokemon TCG because of the Gameboy game - and if that's what they're expecting here, then lol. When I first loaded this game up, it felt so different and inconsistent from every other Pokemon spin-off game I've ever played. It's a pretty bizarre product.

I believe Nintendo 100% owns Pokemon and The Pokemon Company, although allows them to act fairly independently. They don't own Gamefreak, as far as I know. There haven't been any in years, but Gamefreak used to make Playstation games as well.

  • Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc. are indepedent companies from each othe
  • Pokemon Company is a three-way venture between the three companies, with majority control split between the three
  • TPC is based in Japan, with an international branch covering RoW

Not sure what the exact split of TPC is, though. I believe it's 1/3 for each company. 4kids used to own some shares but they've obviously been absorbed into Nintendo by now.

But basically sure, Nintendo has a nice grip on the Pokemon franchise. They just don't have exclusive rights over where the franchise is taken. Essentially, they're primarily interested in the games and they live the rest to TPC.

They're really the same game - simulating the actual card game. The GBC game just adds an overworld and gyms where you challenge AI players. The PC online game allows you to play against AI and real players.

This makes so much sense. It's got some real competition on iPad though, just saying.

Hopefully they stay on top of updates and it's well made.

According to wiki Nintendo owns 32% of the Pokémon company. Also doesn't Nintendo own shares in Creatures Inc, thus increasing their ownership of Pokémon?

Yup.

This comes up every time there's a new Pokemon app for iOS or Android. Nintendo doesn't control as much of Pokemon as people think.

They own controlling stake of the other companies that co-own Pokemon with them. They essentially do own and control Pokemon, but they operate it under their subsidiary owners so it can participate in ventures that the Nintendo brand doesn't want to associate their name with.

They control, they just don't control it as if it's a Nintendo brand.

In other words if Nintendo didn't want this to happen it wouldn't happen so I would assume it has their blessing.

Hopefully it comes to Kindle Fire as well. I would love that.

PC app is nice and all, but native app on my Kindle Fire would be glorious.

It's going to print money. Great move.

I doubt it'll have IAP. They want you to buy actual physical booster packs which have online codes which you can redeem for virtual booster packs. An extra step I doubt most mobile users will take.

This is Pokémon TCGO, so you're gonna have to buy real life physical cards to expand your collection. Or you can buy boosters with game coins, 5 cards for 200 coins and those coins are earned with playing it for countless hours. Buying RL cards way more easier than that.

PC app has no IAP I believe. This is likely to be free. You get cards for free, but you have to play for hours just to do that, and that is over several days. To really get new cards, better and much easier to buy the real TCG packs at stores and use those coupons.

This is going to spawn tons of misinformation on news sites.

Will it though? It's just a port of the PC app that has existed for few years now. Maybe for those unaware that Pokemon Company has been doing iOS apps and other apps.

Seeing this thread with people thinking this is a megaton or a big move by Nintendo, yeah, it will.

They're already testing a gem system.

Man, I hope companies realize that the Android Market have grown enough that we can get those things too. I understand that Apple is simpler to code for since anybody can make an Android tablet. But man, waiting for Heathstone to come to my Nexus 7 2nd is killing me.

Actually the game is free. You get more cards by purchasing actual card packs in the store and then entering a code included with them.
What would be interesting is if you could do it the opposite way; purchase a pack in their online store, and get a coupon for a pack in an actual store (basically a "free" coupon).

This is going to be an interesting experiment and it's going to provide a strong argument for the "Nintendo should put stuff on iOS" or the "Nintendo shouldn't touch iOS" crowd depending on the results.

The only Pokemon TCG that matters.

But really, that is kinda huge and crazy

Best Gameboy game ever, you'll never see something like this released again. Fully intact TCG with deckbuilding, multiplayer, trading, a story mode, and no microtransactions? It's a small miracle it got made at all, and a sequel too!

Wasnt pretty much all the Yugioh GBA games and PS1 games like that? Going around dueling people, building your deck and all that?

In addition, Nintendo is actually the manufacturer of the Pokemon TCG now, so they obviously had to bless the release of this game since they make the current physical versions. Remember that Nintendo is also a playing card game company so, of course, they'd make the TCG.

I forget, was it GBC only? I don't own a GBC and it'd be cool playing this on my (soon to be bought) Game Boy Light.

The basic bottom line that we are saying is don't expect this to be a prelude to say Pokemon X and Y coming to the iPad next.

5 Cards for 95 coins these days.
But you can also get 10 cards packs after playing any ranked match thanks to the lottery system.

And there are also a lot of rewards when you play in one of the tournaments. Playing in a tournament nets you about 150+ cards since you have a chance to get a pack each match, and depending on how well you do you get a bunch of 10 card packs as well..

It's still hard to build a real deck without spending any money though, you'd have to play alot.

An actual freemium pokemon rpg on IOS would be the end of all of Nintendo's financial problems.

It would also be the end of their good reputation if anything goes wrong with the freemium model they choose. Like EA or Atari or, really, most traditional publishers in the mobile space. And it would certainly undermine the selling abilities of their hardware, with people being even more hopeful than now (if that's even possible) for them to publish their stuff on iOS and Android. I don't think it's a good idea. If they do it, I won't complain, but I really don't think it's a good idea.

They reference Nintendo's partial ownership of the franchise.

It's not developed by any of Nintendo's studios.

Gamefreak and Creatures aren't credited similarly.
While this likely wasn't developed by an internal Nintendo studio, it's definitely a Nintendo game.

We tried (the actual rules) we seriously tried, but the game bored the hell out of us, so we went back to just collecting them, which is how I came to that opinion.
Did you play with well-made decks?

The game's too slow if you aren't using well-made decks. Like, competitive-level decks.
