Wow seems like everyone has fast internet.

Mine is relatively decent but i'm not complaining.

I'm less than a megabyte download at the moment. I'm pretty sure it was like 0.14 last time I checked. Whats happened is that we had to move to my grandparents temporarily before we get a new place but we've had to stay longer than we thought and may have to stay until November, which means I won't enjoy online Smash or be able to play the two tournaments. I hope we can move this month, but not looking likely. Don't disqualify me from the tourneys yet just incase we do move tho lol.

Has anyone started setting up a November 3DS Tournament? I do hope we have monthly tournaments for 3DS...ugh this sucks, because all the single player modes are not good imo. I was only getting it for online. My most hyped up game and I have to spend a month with a gimped version. Fuck my online.

While we are on the subject of online, can I ask a couple questions about wifi since I don't know much, maybe there is something to make it go faster? Sorry for going off topic but I need to ask.

Apparantly my grandparents have the internet combined satallte, but I really dunno which kinda satallite it is. Most of the time it sucks like I said. Less than a megabyte speed, and it will randomly stay disconnected for upto two hours at a time for no reason.

However, randomly for like two or three days straight it'll just go faster...atleast as fast as my old 6MB speed maybe even faster. Fast enough to watch YouTube videos atleast. I really haven't tried playing online during this period, I should've but at the moment not really into any online games at the moment and was into watching Yt vids so I didn't think to try. :/ I did actually try one MK7 match amd it was fine but it DC at the end. Not sure if it was a random DC that it has or because I am to far away (living in a trailer, not actually in their house) so I dunno about that. (However being in their house has no affect on speed.)

Obviously, since the fast internet lasts around three days, it makes me think that its like a cell phone where each month you have so many Gigs until you run out...but it happens twice a month. Around the first then again around the tenth...yeah. Me and my parents aren't close with the grandparents and all of us want to leave so we really don't want to bother them too much with trying to make it work.

So the other obvious conclusion is to turn off the satallite box and see if that makes it faster. But tried and nope. :/ Unless there is some other way then turning off the box right next to the tv.

My mom though it might be their router and that we should try and split it with mine and see if mine works better. Is this a good idea? Don't wanna mess anything up...

I am getting the download version of this so its going to be pure fucking luck if I will be able to download at launch or not. Downloaded the demo less than 5 minutes when I had a good connection, but thats rare. A slow connection might be fine if the 3DS while in download later auto starts redownloading while I'm asleep during the night of the 2nd since like I said, it will randomly D/C from the internet.

Whats even more worrisome is that alot of the time, the wifi on my 3DS doesn't work while its in sleep mode, it will also D/C from wifi even if wifi works on my other systems, which means the wifi in general didn't go out yet the 3DS wouldn't stay connected while in sleep mode (which you need to do since download now if it D/Cs you have to restart the download) Maybe connecting my router would fix the sleep mode issue atleast? It is not being to far away when I was 30ft away at the time with it working on my iPad and working on my 3DS opened while standing a foot away and it didn't work at all while in sleep mode.

So it will be blind luck that when 11PM cst 10/02/14 hits, I have fast internet which is completely random, then choose download now and hope that the internet here just won't randomly disconnect which is also completely random, then hope that Nintendo's own servers being hammered doesn't throw me off the download.

I'm fucked.

If it uses P2P, then shit, I'm not complaining. It better mean no online removal for the foreseeable future.
Oh, it should be fine. While there are dedicated servers for matchmaking, Nintendo no longer uses GameSpy so we should run into the problem the Wii/DS ran into, not for a long time at least.

Also, maybe it's just me, but the game seems way less aerial than previous smashes. I haven't played enough to comment on why this is, but it could also just be me.

I actually think aerial play is even more heavily encouraged in Smash 4, especially offstage plays.

The main negative I have so far is what you've already been hearing: It takes forever to kill with a lot of characters. Matches can drag, and I'm not thrilled about that. Once I get used to characters and learn their kill moves it will probably be better, but as it is, there's way too many times where characters are thrown way off the stage only to come back. These times are particularly boring because they're often too far away to punish right away, so it's just a lot of waiting.

We'll have to see how it pans out, it's way too early to comment on how the metagame will evolve.

Keep in mind my impressions only based on the demo and streams but people keep mentioning how long it takes to kill people. However, if I remember correctly Brawl was even worse about killing people and matches dragging on. However, once everyone started to get more acquainted with the game people were able to find their favorites and what play styles worked for each other. It's also a symptom of having a large cast of characters is that it takes longer to learn the game and what play style works against what opponents.

Disclaimer: I can't read Japanese, so I may have missed certain effects that are hard to test (such as shieldbreaker properties) and I don't know the names of the custom moves so I've completely made them up.

I've got all the customs for DK and Ganondorf, so I'll work on those tonight. Let me know if you're already doing them.

No it was the opposite, Brawl was much faster at launch, one could even say early Brawl was faster than early Smash 4.

You got the wrong Zelda song!

Hmmm... I guess it was just me then but then again all of my mains from melee and/or play styles were nerfed to hell and back so I was at first trying to play the game as I did Melee.

The definition of front-butt.
Question for the vets-

As a newcomer to the series, is there a good character to learn the ropes with?

I would suggest Mario. All characters are easy enough to get into but Mario is like the definitive intro character. Medium movement speed, simple recovery, emphasis on normal attacks (A button), not much lag after attacks (except his spike punch, forward + A in the air). His fireball (B) is familiar if you've played SMB. His cape (side-B) will reflect projectiles and turn enemies around. Only the FLUDD (down-B) is weird, dunno what Sakurai is thinking keeping it the same as SSBB. Also wait for the how to play movie when you start the game.

Here are the characters I'm interested in (spoilers):

I'll start off with Mario and maybe some other classic smash characters in Classic mode then try out some new characters. I really like the new additions for this game, I love all of them!
except Lucina and Dark Pit. Lucina may be the superior Marth though. -_-

Yes we can talk about Megaman 2 Remix!

I would normally agree with those choices, but none of those live up to this one!

The most interesting part of this thread since the Japan release to me is the JoeInky/georly custom character movesets and impressions. Definately keep it up guys!

I don't understand this, because I've seen and watched 3 stock 8 minute games that end quicker than 3 stock games in melee.

Honestly as someone who loves melee and it's one of his favourite games I can safely say as someone who's played Smash 4 that this is mostly hyperbole. Some characters may have longer games, but that was the same in Melee and there's nothing wrong with that. The rage mechanic and VI are not random and they'll certainly not be easy to master. Besides VIing is basically just SDI without needing a second stick anyway.

That doesn't even rank, man.

THIS is the correct answer.

3rd only to Melee Menu 2 and Rainbow Road Medley.
And maybe a few others, Reshiram/Zekrom and Magicant are too good.

I posted Bath Time ironically...but after listening to it, I'm falling for the song ~

It's all just speculation at this point. No one knows how the competitive game will evolve. Most people don't even own it yet.

I’m reposting this from the DLC topic:
This text was found in the 3DS ROM dump: You will need to update the software via Nintendo eShop before using the in-game shop.

After further research, I’m 99% certain “in-game shop” refers to a DLC shop. That’s the exact wording Nintendo has used for DLC in other games.

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Additional Course Packs that extend the coin collecting fun of New Super Mario Bros 2 can be purchased for play in Coin Rush mode. These Course Packs are available for purchase from within the in-game shop.

Steel Diver: Sub Wars
Lastly, the in-game shop that was limited to Premium-version owners is now accessible by players using the free version. Owners of the free version will be able to purchase their own fleets.

Mario Kart 8
Adds the ability to access the in-game shop and download three free Mercedes-Benz cars: Mercedes-Benz GLA, 300 SL Roadster, and Silver Arrow

It’s happening.

agreed. a lot of his points don't hold a lot of weight if there are exceptions to everything.
ANd just because he listed all of the complaints he foresaw he'd get doesn't mean they aren't viable. I still think competitive smash players are extremely, annoyingly reluctant to change. They want it to be more of the same game. but i just think melee was easiest to mimic a traditional fighting game, which is what the whole competitive game has evolved to. Mimicking a regular fighting game. A lot of new mechanics were implemented that ideally should work fine for competitive play, but of course.
