Halo |OT 20| It really does feel like Halo

Too many comments about the quality of that list to name, but here are a couple:

Two people who are paid to have opinions about video games think Abandon is better than 25 maps in the Halo series, including the secretly great (Arena) Zealot, which was listed as being of lower quality than even the awful default Forge spaces Sandbox and Impact.

Vertigo, a mediocre map that relies entirely on an equally mediocre EMP gimmick, is ranked higher than Pitfall, a pretty faithful remake of a map that is widely considered to be near the high-water mark for the series in terms of map quality.

Okay.

Carry on.
Sometimes I wonder if they make these lists dumb just 'cause they like to see people rage.

Dun worry man, I'll fix game journalism in a few years.

Thanks. I like it, too.
Glad to see my friend's website still being shared around here and glad the new design is liked! He is literally working on adding the additional 50 achievements that were just revealed right now and we are trying to do some research on the new mission specific achievements (if any) and will try and update everything once that's all done.

All this stuff reminds me...

Also, how have we not recreated the HaloGAFCivilWar.gif yet?

Someone did.

It's too dark to see any details and the text is too big and there's no fade out and some text is missing too.

I still can't get over how shockingly shit the Reach maps were. A bunch of forge stuff along with areas copy and pasted from the campaign. Just awful.

Bungie took the re-using assets for other modes thing way too far with Destiny too. It's pretty terrible. Destiny's PvP looks like it's ripped straight from campaign (and perhaps it was) just like Reach.

Vile practice.

Good to hear. I bookmarked the page now and it will serve me as a guide.

Wrong font also. Downgrade confirmed.

I'm not good with these things and it was just me playing arround with the GifCam tool.

The source video is unfortunately this dark, so I can't do anything about it. Somebody should do a better version, when the game is out.

Apparently IGN is ranking all 110 multiplayer maps leading up to MCC now that IGN First is over.

110-86 posted today.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/11/03/ranking-every-halo-map-ever-made-110-86

Yeah, I mean it's super tough to ever do something like this, so I'm glad most of the responses seem to be pretty mature.

For one thing IGN has several HUGE Halo fans, with thousands of games played each, but there's still maps we barely remember. Stuff from Halo 2 Vista, or the final Reach/Halo 4 map packs. So from the perspective of familiarity alone, this was challenging.

The other "problem" is that Halo Multiplayer is like pizza - even when it's bad it's pretty good. There's only about ~20 Halo MP maps that I would say are actually, genuinely not good. So that's what's going to rile people up about this list - the switchover from Not Good to Good is around #80 - so there will be maps in the 80s and 70s that other people think are great. And maybe they are. But we just didn't think so.

It's a really really high quality curve, in other words. There's maps like Powerhouse or Isolation that totally do what they set out to do, fill a role effectively, are fun to play, and they still got pushed low-ish in the rankings not because they aren't good, but just because they aren't better.

Back in '07 I literally followed a guide online that showed me where I could scratch my Halo 3 disc so that Isolation would not load so when I went into MM it would never pick that map.

don't sweat it, it is super hard to do a list like this, and pleasing everyone is impossible

Halo 4 map packs were the only Halo DLC I've ever skipped and that list makes me glad I did. Why so low for Rat Race and Zealot I wonder? Figured I would have seen backwash grace that first list.

The things we did to play the Halo we wanted to play.

I uninstalled all doc except Standoff just so I could only play Standoff

Isolation was sweet in Team Dubs if you could abuse the regens. But I guess that kinda makes it a bad map if it can be abused lol.

Also I advocated for Reach as much as a I could but got out-voted by Ryan Brian and Alfredo. Sometimes I feel like a crazy person for loving Reach so much.

Sorta. In this regard, Bungie made the PvP maps unique enivrons unlike Reach which had SEVERAL maps that were ripped straight from the main campaign (Powerhouse, Countdown, Zealot, Boardwalk, whatever the Ivory Tower remake was called).

In Destiny, the Crucible maps just "look" like campaign sections in terms of architecture/aesthetics, so at the very LEAST Bungie improved on Reach in this ONE regard... :-/

There were two main reasons why I disliked the map. First, aesthetics. Flood maps like that were never all that interesting to play on, and the lower half of the level looked like a colon. Second, gameplay. The default variant shouldn't have included a Ghost. Probably shouldn't have Mongooses either but at least getting a kill with one of those was skillful. The Regen that you mentioned could totally be abused by a team that controlled Brute Shot and power weapons too.

tl;dr, the map looked like shit and played like shit

The IT remake felt like it was inserted into the campaign for the sake of it. You were in and out and it barely registers.

Of course, it was a remake, not an original map.

I don't see Boneyard mentioned yet, meaning it's ranked higher than all these maps, including Highlands. That is a genuine crime.

Standoff is such a great map. One of my favourites.

Yup. So good.

I once got a splatter on that map by hitting a Warthog with a BR from half the map away, as it swung into an enemy player. The bullet added enough momentum to the hog that it registered as a kill and a splatter medal.

Highlands was one of the maps that helped me continue to play Reach for man, many more months than I would have. Not a great map, but it's solid and one of the best Reach maps for sure.

Pretty sure Highlands was never in matchmaking outside of the DLC playlist.

Can't convince me otherwise.

Pretty sure I only played that map in the playlist or customs

It rarely appeared outside of the DLC Playlist. When the playlist was taken down, I stopped playing as much. I pretty much lived in that playlist for a long while.

The Ridgeline/Timberlands came and I played again. Until they took that away from me too.

Just thinking, I'd happily pay $15/20 for all the Reach maps as DLC.

Need a quick confirmation.

So if I live in CST timezone, I can play digital version of MCC at 11:01 CST?

Also, is it confirmed that I can pre-download the 20 GB day 1 patch?

TIA.

I find it funny how all the developer comments on the Halo 1/2 maps are along the lines of "Yeah, we made a mistake here guys. Sorry" whilst the Halo 4 guys are all "We sure did an awesome job on this bad boy, it's so great! One of my favourite maps!"

Standoff had huge issues with Warthogs and player spawns outside the base.

True, but it also had a Laser. And a base with stickies/PP.

The spawns weren't the best but even when fully locked down and I'm driving a great gunner to easy kill heaven, you need to control the enemy base to force them to spawn outside and even then you only get at most 70-80 of the team spawning together in one area.

If you're team loses the laser. Loses their own base. and lets the over team set up the hog spawn trap, well the teams weren't particularly balanced in the first place. I've locked a ton and been locked on Standoff, it takes just one player, one sticky, to sort it out.

It's like Hogs dominating on Rat's Nest. No decent team would let that happen - you literally just need a single player with a clue. I've killed over 10 hogs in a single game (think it was 10, time makes this number a bit hazy now).
