afaik, there's no mission or side mission that requires to visit the subway.
It's very well done too.

I once found a webpage with all 'hidden' locations and enterable buildings, there's quite a few to discover.

Kind of a wasted asset in GTA V. They never really incorporated it into any mission.

Perhaps they'll put it to use in DLC content.

It's a surprisingly awesome place to escape cops and a great alternative to just driving into a tunnel.

Partially just for the variety, but also for two other reasons. The first is cops behave differently when you're on foot. If you're driving or if you're running, there are different spawn and chase systems. The game actually has some pretty awesome foot chases if you're jumping over fences of houses and through warehouses and then escape into the subway. Secondly, the subway is pretty big and the art is really good, so it's a very visually cool place to have a shootout or standoff.

God dammit I need a PS4 now. Xbox has no foliage or beauty.

Actually never mind, graphics are still pretty good on Xbone, it's just that there is less foliage, not a lower quality foliage. Not a big deal.

Strangely enough, I ran into the same problem on the exact same mission. It only seems to be that mission.
