NeoGAF Games of the Year 2014 Awards

Welp, this is probably the year I disagree the most with GAF.
Don't care at all about the first 6-7 titles. But I don't have a WiiU so I'm biased in that regard.

Also, for the top games I prefer to see either new IPs or sequels that are a tremendous step up from the previous game...

B2 is especially weird as B1 was only #4 when it came out even though it was available to much more players and from what I've been told B2 is not really better than first game, "just" keeps the quality level. Though it IS also the GOTY with the least number of points (edit: apart from Journey, ups)

Nice to see that Alien got a pretty high ranking, kinda disappointed P.T. isn't higher as everyone with a PS4 was able to play that piece of history. Speaking of PS4, I'm surprised Driveclub managed to get into the top20, still waiting for the PS+ version :p

Bayonetta 2 is much better than the original, in my opinion.

And Journey had less votes, unless I'm reading the data wrong.

How does this work exactly? I looked through the OP but couldn't find anything on it...

Check the data download for this year, and the documents for goty-user-affinity.txt to find those with similar tastes based on your votes, and goty-recommend.txt to find what games you should play based on your similarities.

Almost every comment I read on Bayo 2 was about how much better it was than the first one.
Also, Bayo 2 did get more points than Journey.

Download the file with all the info in it and open the file called GOTY-User_Affinity and look up your name.

Edit: beaten by one of the main men.

That's the general opinion, though there are still some who feel the original was better.

Bayonetta had a couple of years to build really positive word of mouth. And whoever told you it's not better than the first game needs to go and play them side by side, the difference is very notable.

While it might be an indication of the weakness of 2014, I'd also say that literally the only thing I've heard about Bayonetta 2 is how much better it is at everything than the first game.

Bayo 2, Smash, Kart, DKCTF, South Park, and Shovel Knight all in the top ten? What an awesome bloody list!

#1 is spot on. Simply the best action game ever made.

PC Game of the Year: Divinity: Original Sin = 339 points, 7 honorable mentions
2. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance = 87 points, 5 honorable mentions
3. Wasteland 2 = 76 points, 8 honorable mentions
4. Valkyria Chronicles = 71 points, 9 honorable mentions
5. Jazzpunk = 67 points, 3 honorable mentions

46. [PC] Wasteland 2 (RPG) = 76 points, 8 honorable mentions
47. [3DS] Kirby: Triple Deluxe (Platform) = 71 points, 8 honorable mentions
48. [PC] Jazzpunk (Adventure) = 67 points, 3 honorable mentions

Where did Valkyria go from the overall list? On the PC GOTY list it's sandwiched above Jazzpunk but under Wasteland 2 but then it's missing from the overall rankings.

I didn't vote this year, procrastinated. Anyways, while I'm not a Wii U owner I still think Bayonetta 2 is a great choice :)

A great list, and thank you to Cheesemeister and timetokill for compiling and organizing all of this.

The 2013 GotY Awards made me start to consider buying a Wii U, and after playing the three big Wii U exclusives of 2014 (Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., and Mario Kart 8), my decision to purchase it feels fully justified.

Yah, I kept hearing this, too, but I have a weird disconnect because while Bayonetta 2 is definitely smoother, it just didn't feel as well paced or as interestingly engaging as Bayonetta 1 did (the predecessor having a better cast of enemies, moments, and climactic finish).

Congrats to Bayo2, deserved winner. Tropical Freeze at 6 is higher than I expected as well.

WiiU (deservedly) dominated the chart.

Here are some people with great taste

I disagree in every regard. Bayonetta 1 had low moments, like the Space Harrier section that went on too long, the parts where you have to protect Cereza, and the entire motorcycle chapter.

Bayonetta 2 on the other hand, was perfectly paced from start to finish, had more interesting bosses, and a more compelling story.

Though for realsies, I want to give a shoutout to the Jackbox Party Pack as a game that by all rights would have been on my list, had I cared to go back and edit it. The game is an absolutely fantastic, uproariously fantastic multiplayer experience. Drawful and Fibbage are games that anyone can play, from my 8 year old cousin to my 80 year grandmother. Over the holidays, I've played it at family gatherings, at drunken new year's parties, hardcore lan parties and casual meetups. Jackbox is singlehandedly the most underrated game of the year (if GAF voting is anything to go by), and in terms of sheer fun I'd rate it above my own game of the year votes, Sportsfriends and Nidhogg.

Jackbox is funny, crude, universally simple, and the most upliftingly enjoyable experience I can imagine games giving to a room of people. I played this game with my divorced parents, and we all had a blast. I cannot speak highly enough of the Jackbox's Drawful and Fibbage games, and I believe everyone should find time to play them with friends.

Bayo 2 has almost all of the enemies that were in Bayo 1, plus just as many new ones. Also has all of the same characters except the little girl. Also, the pacing in Bayo 2 is superior - no half-baked minigames breaking the flow. Bayo 2 is incredible in every way.

Kudos to the 23 dudes who had Crimzon Clover World Ignition on their GOTY list. You have awesome taste in games. Also, LMAO at Ubisoft as no 2 best publisher.

I love Pokken!
How GAF ranked my top 10:

Hmm mine was

5. Dark Souls 2
4. Dragon Age Inquisition
18. The Evil Within
9. Shadow of Mordor
50. WoW Warlords of Draenor
29. The Wolf Among Us
21. MGSV Ground Zeroes
113. Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
7. Wolfenstein
22. Hearthstone

I'm surprised both MGSV and Hearthstone were just 3 points below DriveClub. Also i must be one of the extreme minority that liked Lords of Shadow 2 :p

Danganronpa 1 is so much better than Danganronpa 2. Good work GAF. Fuck DR2.
It's still a decent game but just a huge step down

Also Bayo & Donkey Kong were my picks for goty, although I forgot to vote. MK was a big disappointment unfortunately and I've dropped Smash already so I'm eh on those.

As discussed in the rules discussion thread, rereleases were eligible for Platform Awards but not the overall rankings. You can still see how many points it got, though, either in the Platform Awards (which you quoted) or the goty-consoles.txt file in the download.

That top ten is Ninsanity! Just shows what an amazing year Wii U and Nintendo in general had.

It's funny how disconnected from the community gaming sites seem to be, if we look at this outcome.

That's an outstanding job you did there cheese. Kudos.

This list is fantastic and very close to my actual top ten, and also reflects how unremarkable the exclusives on the twins haber been so far IMO.

Don't care for any character except Bayo and Jeanne and Jeanne is criminally underused in this one (also squirrel boy's story is awful). I like the climactic finish. Bayo 1's finale trounces 2's.

Yes, 1's enemies are in 2, and that happens to be the best chapter in the game weirdly enough. I just found all of 2's new enemies really lackluster except for Sloth. The game just felt like going through the motions and I never hit a wall with any enemies (I played on 3rd climax) like I did with Grace/Glory or the Lion/Tiger things. I never felt challenged by the enemies and they never felt challenging to fight. Even Sloth isn't that hard but it was the most entertaining to fight.

edit: Also I should clarify what I meant by pacing. Yes, Bayo 1 is bogged down by the mini-game nonsense moreso than 2 but I meant the enemy encounters just felt actually tough and I would enter a fight and think "Oh shit, I have to fight 3 joys" and it would be a hell of a fight to learn and overcome (I should also mention the Joys are really good to fight, too). That flow of enemies always felt good and I just didn't get that from 2. Again, it just felt like going through the motions for me.

A big part of me thinking "eh" when I think Bayo 2 is just that it didn't impact me that much (it is #6 on my list). Bayo 1 came in like a wrecking ball and 2 just kinda fizzled out at the end for me (I still think 2's ending is garbage and not triumphant where as 1 is always crazy and bombastic to see).

Nintendo top 3, God damn! Happy to see Bayo take it. Didn't think there were near enough Wii U owners to get it up there.

Thanks for putting another one of these together timetokill and Cheesemeister.

Surprised at my affinity list (sup bros). First time I've had any in the 100s and there are three of them!

1. Kagoshima_Luke (103)
2. NewVegasDog (101)
3. Zefah (100)
4. so1337 (96)
5. Spineker (87)
6. ViviOggi (86)
7. NotLiquid (85)
7. TheBigG753 (85)
9. Moff (84)
10. CambriaRising (82)

Curious what it would have been like had I not put down SMT IV (thanks Atlus) since it's practically a thrown vote this year. If someone makes a like-for-like list with yours, how high of a rating will they get?

I see, I've played the first and liked it. I didn't read the OT thread so maybe that's why I have a warped view of the game. Still, I feel like the first is enough for me. I played it for the good combat as I actually kinda dislike the style, characters etc.

Hmm mine was

Oh, I like this idea.
Fixed mine to reflect the order I ranked them as well:

5. Dark Souls II
27. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
90. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
95. Lords of the Fallen
17. Transistor
21. Driveclub (Bumped up due to TLOU Remaster?)
23. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
12. Destiny
22. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes
31. P.T.

I take solace in the fact that I was LTTP on Tomb Raider, and it was a Top 10 in last years list.

Also I'm said in what is probably the strongest year for RPGs in a decade, Divinity and Shadowrun are hardly up there ):

I didn't vote for them! Don't hurt me, I couldn't finish them in time.

Shadowrun Dragonfall DC isn't even in the top 10 despite being a lot better than Dragon Age, but I realize that's because a list like this will always largely be a popularity contest. The only way for it to be 'fair' would be if everyone played everything, but the bigger / more marketed games will always be played by more people, and so get more votes.

Kudos to Bayonetta 2 winning despite this though.
