Stealing the show means "Being the center of attention".

The last of us spoilers:

Ellie becomes the protagonist and you play as her during the best part (IMO) of the game. When you are playing as her she becomes the center of attention. Thats not opinion based, thats factual.

In other words, in Winter she does factually and absolutelly steal the show.

Even if the player stops playing as her afterwards, for a part of the game, she became the center of attention, hence she "stole the show". Theres no argument to be made here. When your playing character changes from one to another, the latter becomes the center of attention.

Dont get me wrong, it is an opinion, but one that can be proven right..

Well the original premise isn't so much that people can use motion controls but being able to use them effectively, in order to do a 'quick response'.

It's entirely plausible that most people wouldn't meet his standards of a 'quick response' even when using an analog device.

Even if he happens to be right, there's a difference between something subjective, which can't be shown to be right or wrong, and a prediction which can be verified.

Even if 'impossible' means 'impossible for 90%+', it can still be wrong. It's not really subjective.

And there's no way for a reviewer to know if somebody will play a game three times or not. So they shouldn't consider the average playthrough time?

They don't know the average playtime; only their own. And it's perfectly fine to speak about it in that context, as they should have with the motion controls.

What they shouldn't do is make declarative statements about things they don't know about.

I know it sounds completely unrelated. Im just using this as an example to show how an opinion can also be a fact, and that not everything stated in a review is merely an opinion.

I had to use an unrelated game, because I havent got my hands on splatoon yet, so I have to use other kind of examples.

You can't objectively state that someone's the center of attention because that's not a physical state you can test and verify.

Well if he's using it as a synonym for very difficult, then he's using impossible in a subjective manner. It doesn't have to be verifiable for his opinion as he's recounting his own experience and extrapolating it.

I was expecting low 80s to be the metacritic average and looks like that's what we got. Basically the mentality of "We need to assign a basic score and then deduce penalties from it for perceived failings" rather than look at the big picture. Attitudes like "Splatoon is fun, but we can't give it a great score 'cause it only has 5 maps and a couple modes - what do you think this is, DOTA?

I usually hate competitive multiplayer games. I'm also not generally a fan of FPS & TPS games. I've tried with different games like Garden Warfare & Titanfall and I see why people like them, but they're just not for me. Even with the rare instances of finding a multiplayer game I like, the toxic community (LoL) or lack of experience (Shadowrun - I first played it years after release when everybody was already experts) inevitably drives me off.

The 90 minutes I spent with Splatoon in the Global Testfire was some of the most fun I've had with a video game in years.

Splatoon is the only competitive online multiplayer game I've played where losing is still loads of fun.

I love how you can still be helpful to your team even with a mediocre K/D ratio. I love how you can coordinate with your team just by paying attention to the gamepad, without needing to talk at all (thus avoiding toxic players & gaining the ability to play with players who don't speak your language). I love how matches are super short, thus minimizing a host of issues. I love how much fun it is just to move & shoot through this world.

Yes, Splatoon might have a few peripheral issues, but the core is so good. The last games I was this impressed with their design include Monaco, Dark Souls, and Pac-Man: Championship Edition.
Perfectly said and I completely agree with everything and it's why I'm so out of touch with reviewing culture. I said it in other threads but the idea of substracting points out of missing features or lacking options would be so foreign in anything else. "I liked action movie x but it only had 3 actions scenes while other contemporary have 5".

I do think that annoyances should be well noted like not being able to quit from the match making lobby in case you don't find people.

I really feel dumb arguing about The Last of Us in a Splatoon thread, but that's a horribly dumb example. "Stealing the Show" is an idiom that means: "to get all the attention and praise at an event or performance"

It has nothing to do with a narrative perspective change, which is a well-known literary device. No one watches The Place Beyond the Pines (A film with a perspective change) and says "Wow, Bradley Cooper really stole the show from Ryan Gosling!"

man... i'm surprised it got an 8.2 with all of that missing.

I guess what they did right, they REALLY did right... but... this game doesn't sound finished at all.

I don't think the lack of content is from it not being finished, but rather the gradual trickle is there to keep the playerbase active. Maybe not everything, but the first couple months of content updates are almost certainly done. I don't think Nintendo's release pipeline and QA process would even support such frequent updates otherwise.

It's one of their biggest in new IP launches in ages and probably their biggest gamble on online multiplayer ever, and a low player base could kill it off shortly after release so they're doing everything they can to keep players coming back for a long time.

The game is obviously a .... As some of you say, a "bomba"

Really though I kinda figured this game would be a bit of a hit since it's fresh, new, fun, and a breakaway from all the copy paste washed out war shooters.
The wait for my birthday next month is going to feel long

I agree that they could perhaps written a bit more regarding motion controls to point out that it was only their experience with it, but to be fair, they say other things like "soundtrack will charm players who loved the likes of Jet Set Radio", and people dont seem to argue about that. They dont know if this applies to everyone either, maybe someone wont like the soundtrack as much as the reviewer does.

I'm thinking that with a bigger playerbase, the lobby waiting will be pretty nonexistent. Atleast in the testfire, while it worked, I never had to wait for too long.

With the stance of most of these reviews, I'm wondering if:
A) It'll inspire these reviewers to 'revisit' the scores in August and
B) If this will deter developers from releasing games like this. I kind of applaud the idea of content in a game evolving constantly, but it seems to have hampered review scores.

It's a bit of a shame when the reviewers talk about how great the gameplay is, but dock the score over content and options. With a few more maps ready it could have bolstered the scores. (not that scores really matter looking at MP10)

I see what your saying, but all of that can also be considered as "finishing the game"

It may just be semantics, but I dont even think Smash 4 is a finished game yet, at least not until tournament mode comes out.

So I will ask this, I guess from these reviews, it will be very much worth it to buy the Splatoon Wii U bundle from Best Buy?

I love my WiiU. I think Super Mario 3D Land, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and now Splatoon make it a system worth owning. Although if you're not interested in those games, there is little else.

That's how I read it

But guess we'll see how it all unfolds when they drop. If it's a simple, tiny update. Probably means content is done and on the disc and simply rolling it out. To keep userbase engaged.

I mean that seems to be what Splat Zone is

hmm okay, I can live with that. Core gameplay matters more anyway as you say. If I compare it to other Nintendo offerings, if it came down to sacrificing maps vs gameplay in Smash or Mario Kart, I would sacrifice maps anyday.

I guess I"ll get used to the controls. When I played in the hour long demo nothing felt natural but that's to be expected.

How long did it take you to get used to the Gyro+analog setup? Or did you opt for the dual analog?
Despite being highly skeptical (at least on paper), i eventually kept playing with gyro and analog, as that configuration just works damn fine.
And a lot better than the usual dual analog option, since here i think the sensibility is a bit off for my taste (and that is exactly where the gyro controls shine, by letting you have that little extra finess by tilting around your gamepad).

As for the time, it clicked with me within minutes, but i had played the game before at E3 and Gamescom.
Also, the single player will give you a HUGE hand with the controls, as you will see.
Tackle that first, and then jump online!

Seems like the one big thing that probably is "unfinished" is private lobbies, and even that's probably less unfinished in the sense of it being an intended feature not ready in time and more unfinished in the sense that they probably only just started on it after realizing how much demand there was for it.

I'd do some research if you're interested in buying the console

I could never recommend buying a console for one game

Well, I do love SSB4 and I do like a lot of other Nintendo games, but I only have a Wii and 3DS XL right now for Nintendo. I find the Wii U more accessible than the Wii. Also, I could go for Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 (I may pay $80 for a new and sealed Xenoblade 1), Wind Waker HD and maybe a couple others. I know it's not many games, but some I would like to play.

Throw in some Donkey Kong and Mario games. But yeah, I know, it's an investment, especially since I have a PC and PS4 that I pay for.

Spoilers:

Theres a time when shes the absolutely only character on screen.

Theres absolutely nothing else to look at, except for her. and a white scenario.

Theres nothing ones attention can be focused except for her. Absolutely nothing.

Theres absolutely no scentific way shes not the center of attention.

http://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/center of attention

Of course, what one pays attention to might be subjective. In a theater, one might be looking at the roof thinking about sex isntead of looking at the one character on stage.

But those people are not considered.

Why?

Let me explain.

When I say sugar is sweet, its a fact. But someone else, someone who burned his tongue and cannot taste things anymore can say "No, I dont find this sweet".

Sure, thats a truth to him, but it doesnt negate the fact that the object itself is sweet.

Ellie is the center of attention at certain parts, even if you do not pay attention to her (which is physically, emotionally and cognitively impossible if you are playing the game).

Games being the interactive media they are, you have to at least acknowledge whats going on in the game in order to progress/play. So theres no way whatsoever a person couldnt pay attention to whats on screen.

blackbox2.jpg

This black box is the center of attention on the image. If you acknowledge the image whatsoever, you will see the box. You will notice it. You will pay attention to it. If there were 2 or three boxes, sure, you could argue what is the center of attention. But when theres only ONE element on screen? Theres no argument to be made.

I really feel dumb arguing about The Last of Us in a Splatoon thread, but that's a horribly dumb example. "Stealing the Show" is an idiom that means: "to get all the attention and praise at an event or performance"

Like every idiom, it has multiple meanings.

to be in the spotlight, to become the center of attention in place of something else, those also work.

""to get all the attention and praise at an event or performance"

Is subjective and cant be used in an argument, sure, I could interview every single person who played the game to ask if they liked Ellie more than Joel's performance. But you see the point, this meaning of the word cannot be used in an objective sense.

I loved analog + gyro controls on the Vita games that had it so I was so glad to see that Splatoon included it as well. Definitely takes some getting used to at first but works so well once you've got it down.

that seems like a solid start. I'll definitely add that if you like Mario Kart games 8 is a must own. I personally don't really like Mario Kart games and 8 is probably my favorite game on the console behind Tropical Freeze. it is a joy to play.

Yeah this is a big one for me. I want to be able to team up with my brother and play in neogaf rooms. I'm really curious how this will work.

I'm really curious if they will add-in a voice chat option for this mode. It makes sense when teaming up with friends.

Hold off on buying Xenoblade. Nintendo is starting to put Wii games on the eShop and I really wouldn't be surprised if Xenoblade is added around when X comes out this Fall.

And it'll be much cheaper than $80.

Honestly, I'm weird on 8, but that's probably because I'm really, really not used to the new mechanics. The idea that you can customize your car that much and how it relies so heavily on drift-boosting (as my brother calls it "Wiggle that shit") is tough for me, but I'm sure I can get better with time.

I fear that if I wait for more content or a price drop, the games player base will have dropped significantly. Also and the people who kept with it will be of way higher skill.

First-party Nintendo games tend to not drop much in price. The Wonderful 101 was an anomaly (seeing as it unfortunately bombed).

oh man, seriously just give it time. such a great game. I could wax poetic on it all day long.
