VRFocus: Big Morpheus push at Sony presser, half of their booth devoted to it

Agreed.

I'm married with kids. I play with VR as part of my media mix, so does my wife (we like to try out VR experiences together). My daughter would love to but I'm concerned about impacting her vision (she's 5) otherwise the whole family would play. And if we could meet up in VR for games or virtual trips we would all use it together.

Really don't understand the line of argument you were responding to either.

Its not hard to understand - you're cutting yourself apart from the rest of your home.

Time to win me over Sony. I am cautiously optimistic for VR. There is no way I am going to make the $1500+ investment for Rift so Morpheous is really the only shot I have at experiencing VR this gen (unless building a rift ready PC drops to under $500) i hope they take it as seriously as is required for new cutting edge tech and I hope it is comfortable and that visual fidelity is kept to a reasonable level that allows for a rock solid 60+ frames per second.

How would VR improve a side-scroller? A fighting game? A sports game like the NHL series? First-person is clearly the genre that makes the most sense for VR, imho.

There's actually many, many opportunities to benefit from VR in non-first-person gaming and entertainment. The difference is PRESENCE.

btw, why is it assumed that demoing VR isn't interesting? Can't be that much worse than someone standing motionless on a stage looking down at a monitor with a DS4 in their hands?

I mean, it's a virtual reality headset. I think you're missing the point of VR if you're just going to treat it like a personal screen (even though, yeah, I guess you could use it like that).
I don't think you quite understand what VR is, no offense.

Which is cool, because I think you're gonna be blown away when you realize how off your preconceptions are about it. :)

The actual market of people who will use VR on a regular basis would seem to be people who will end up with a Rift rig. I know I want as much fidelity as possible after experiencing it.

Modern VR is pretty impressive. The immersion level is really unsettling when you take off a headset.

Curious to see how they'll talk about it at a conference, since the spectator can't actually feel what VR feels like.
Plus, hope the big titles avaible for it wil be playable even without one.

Good.

Sony needs people to go hands-on (errr... heads-on? :p) with this thing. E3 is a tremendous opportunity for that. If the price point is right (has to be), this could be really big.

Dedicating conference time... well... I'm not sure about that. Official name + price + early launch games I can see, maybe some technical details about the product, but I feel like it's a waste of time selling people on the concept of VR on a big presentation screen. Floor experience, plus some info videos posted on PlayStation.com or something would be just as effective. Maybe a few killer-app bomb drops (i.e. No Man's Sky being VR compatible and released at the time of Morpheus launch) during the conference could get the hype rolling?
Then get demo units out all over the place during the holiday season/early spring and watch the demand grow.

Its not hard to understand - you're cutting yourself apart from the rest of your home.

I think it depends on the particular experience. Party games that don't aurally cut you off and involve other players interacting via other devices aren't 'cutting you off completely'.

Otherwise though, if I had company over - friends, family - no, I would not go off in an immersive experience. But I do get time to myself now and then. Maybe not everyone does, and so maybe VR may not be suitable for everyone's lifestyle, but many people do get some uninterrupted downtime.

(While VR might be another step along from many situations in terms of immersion that 'cuts people off', I would note that other media can have similar social effects. Woe betide anyone who tries to interrupt my brother watching his soccer. It's impossible to carry a conversation with him once he's into a game. They don't call them football widows for nothing...)

Yes. Immersion. That is the point. That is what makes it exciting.

Totally understand that, and I can appreciate the tech.

But there will be people, like myself, who don't see it fitting in my life. I don't want it to fail, I think its cool.

Agreed. Have they announced pricing for Morpheus yet? I bet we'll at least hear about that at E3.

Yeah, one highlight reel/video + maybe the price + maybe the release date + maybe the new name, etc. in max 10 minutes.
More important is that people acutally play it at their both.

But devoting a large part of the conference to VR would be terrible and boring as F!

When i play games I like sitting around w/ my roomates/gf, sometimes have music on, etc.

W-why would you do that?

I can't play single player games with more than one (SILENT) spectator. It always brings me out of the game. Not on first breakthroughs, at least.

Well, VR only really benefits first-person content, so even if it takes off it's not like everything will be in VR (though I'm sure publishers will try).

I think a heavy VR focus at this time is a mistake. Only a fraction of PS4 owners are the target market right now. Better to focus on mass-market selling the PS4 generally as a platform at E3, the largest mass-market videogame audience.

But, that's also because I'm not really interested.

eh? The target market is everyone. Existing PS4 users have a lower price to entry as they already own a PS4. But anyone really interested may buy a PS4 to use this.

'More meaningful'?
To be fair noone has demoed more than tech-demos to date in VR, and at least one hw-maker is focusing their strategy on them(short experiences).
But anyway - VR has been the focus of other 2015 events to date, so E3 following suit should be expected.

but I've found it interesting to watch others playing in VR, seeing them and simultaneously what they see on a screen, and I have yet to try VR myself.
Well the latter probably plays a factor in that ;)

Ironically first person content is the biggest source of discomfort in current VR.

Get ready to be bored to tears for a good hour of the conference.

Not if they show Witness/NoMansSky/GT7 and other interesting games in their VR form.

And VR segment will not last entire hour, maybe half a hour at most. Last year Sony presconf laster 1h 43mins [Powers section was 4min].

I totally expect them to tell us what the actual name of the device is, its price, and tell us about some games for it, and probably some attempt at showing us what it's like even though they can't. But I don't expect them to jam the device on someone's head and then have them ooh and aah, and say that it's like they're really in the game!

If they do, it'll be 2006 all over again. And I'm sure they know that.

I'm really surprised at all the negative reactions here. I'm really looking forward to any and all VR at e3

sony could should show 10 minutes of uncharted 4 and gaf would think its boring because its already been announced.

i hope they dedicate at least 30 minutes to VR. this needs a big push.
[Powers section was 4min].
but... everybody said it was 20 minutes.

I know Crow serving threads are frowned upon on Gaf but once Morpheus/VR comes out I would love to see a thread dedicated to the sea of negative posts that we have seen on here. I would especially like to see a list of people who go from thinking it’s a fad like 3D TV’s to buying one themselves as im sure there will be many who do.

I cant wait for the VR glory days to start, bring it on!

With the right software, it can be more social than some games. Hey grandma, try out this funny VR thing - it'll make you think you're an astronaut in space! Everyone laughs as Granny waves her arms around and nearly falls over.

And Wii sports makes everyone look like an idiot but is still a very social experience.

I think people see it as Kinect, and fear it will be a large portion that takes away from the games games games aspect of their conference. But VR is much more substantial Kinect ever was. It has the potential to change gaming forever.

So many FPS games would be much crazier having that kind of immersion. Not to mention, the time is right for VR. There are too many major companies investing in it and racing to get to the finish line. Tech is finally good for it and at a price point that isn't insane. So the time is right for VR to take off.

If Sony wants to be apart of that and make it a huge aspect of their PS4 platform, I say good for them. I really think people just need to try VR. It's one of those things that I think will instantly sell itself if people just got to try it out.

Have you had cautionary experiences? :/

I admit, it is a big fear of mine that I'll try out VR and just not be able for it. I hope not though.

I'm reminded of the Jane Fonda video. At least at the outset I think there may be a curiosity factor that draws people around. Maybe as a party piece it would wear out eventually though, I dunno.

I hope VR will give some gaming revolution. I felt I have stopping play any game. Nothing made me want to play more because I felt the immersion repeat all the times. Even g-sync or new GPU didn't feel same when my first PC or console.

All I want is a real proper wow factor.

Motion sickness is 100% a problem for the software makers to solve at this point. The hw (for the major headsets at least) will not cause you discomfort on its own.

summer lesson day 1. ;p

Really, the only reason to own VR.

I am interested in VR but I am concerned about getting motion sickness when playing it. I hope consumers can try out Morpheus before buying it.

It's a legit concern. I am sensitive, and have got motion sickness on a couple things. But I also was able to play some truly amazing things that didn't make me sick (On Oculus). This is a major concern of the companies (including Sony) that are working hard towards solving. They aren't going to release a product that makes 99% of the population puke after trying for 5 min.

Yeah... I really hope this isn't the future.

Totally understand that, and I can appreciate the tech.

Err, I don't understand what your stance is here. You say you don't want it to be the future, but you want it to succeed. It not being for you is fine, but you should give it a try before passing judgment on how it will affect your personal life.

They should make Morpheus's entrance big and bold. Show what it can do for the masses, especially if it's launching in a similar window as the Rift and Vive. If they leverage it correctly and give it proper support, I can see it being a roaring success.

Well, if this takes a big paart of the conference then it's going to be a disappointment for sure. I have very little interest in VR. Sucks.

Indeed, they could well. And really, I feel that would be a better venue for a real Morpheus blowout rather than E3, since at least that is a public event, and non-industry people can go heads-on with it and write long reports on here. The community would be their best ambassadors for VR.
