you'll go bananas for our next Wii U game. it's time to monkey around with Donkey Kong's second banana. i'll be a monkey's uncle if developer Retro Studios doesn't deliver a prime-ate experience. but enough monkey business, here's a trailer.

So if this were to be Diddy Kong Racing. What kind of character roster will it have? Doesn't rare own pretty much all characters of the first Diddy Kong Racing?

And would Nintendo really release another kart game? I guess planes and boats don't really count as karts, but still. Its nearly identical to Mario Kart except for whatever weird story mode it had attached to it, and the boats/planes.

Also, why wasn't Diddy Kong trademarked yet?

Not sure why people assumed it's either the rumoured Diddy Kong Racing sequel or whatever Retro's working on based on a trademark. Perhaps they'll release a wardobe and lingerie series...

If the rumor is true, it would be filled out with second tier Nintendo characters. Examples being Dillon and Mallo, smaller eShop characters. Among others

I'd main Dillon

That's actually really cool! And its a great way to expose people to those characters and their games. Could be a win win situation for Nintendo!

There are several characters missing from Mario Kart that make sense as Diddy Kong Racers. Diddy himself of course, and then Bowser Jr. as well. Dixie Kong would make sense. Then you start getting into more obscure characters and original ones. The rumor we had a while back stated that eShop characters would get into the game in order to boost their profile, so there's that too (Mallo from Pushmo, Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western, etc.).

And if it's more of a kart-racing/adventure game then there's a place for it.

This is not what you think it is.

Also, Nintendo would never release a Diddy Kong Racing on Wii U. If anything, you'll see him return in Mario Kart with some new stages and such, in an upcoming DLC pack, which I'm sure is happening. Another Diddy Kong Racing would just cannibalize Mario Kart sales or just leave it dead in the water.

I actually could see a $30 DKR expansion pack for MK8, with an adventure mode several tracks and lots of racers and cars and different weapons. I just don't see Nintendo doing it.

If Nintendo were any kind of smart, it's a Diddy Kong Racing. There's also a lot of reasons to believe Retro is making it. Think about it.

1. Retro have pretty much become DK series developer and have proved they can do the property justice.

2. The Kart racing genre is still pretty big. DKR was able to get half of MK64s sales back in the day. If a new one could get even half of MK8's sales itd be a huge success.

3. Retro helped with MK7. While not entirely strange, it definitely makes you think why they were asked to get involved in a genre they have never worked on.

4. Maybe co-developed by Monster? I think there was once a rumor that Excitebots was supposed to be a DKR sequel and they havent put anything big out in a while.

5. Diddy Kong was originally planned for MK8... but was cut.

Diddy Kong is not a stranger to the MK series, so it's unusual that they chose to cut him despite showing him off as part of the game.

The new trademark is just icing on the cake.

That screenshot was faked, FYI. Diddy was never, as far as we know, planned for MK8.

I am ok with Retro working with the DK IP as long as they make a 3D game.

I feel like they've done all they can with sidescrollers and more would be a waste.

I'd take a Diddy Kong 3D platformer with open arms.

Mario Kart 8 came out a year ago, it's had two DLC packs and no evidence that there's going to be anymore, Nintendo got its money off of Mario Kart 8. I don't see how Diddy Kong Racing could cannibalize its sales if its coming out almost two years after Mario Kart released.

Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing co-existed just fine on the N64. If they were going to put Diddy in MK8, they would have by now.

DKR2 is happeninggggggggggg

Diddy Kong Racing is a completly different game...did you even play the first one?
It got a "story mode" completly different vehicles to begin with which all drive different.

It woldnt cannibalize any sales at all

The rumor put Monster as the primary developer with Tanabe overseeing and a small team from Retro helping out, and the bulk of Retro working on another project.

They just ported Xenoblade Chronicles 3D to N3DS.

Although I still think that monster/retro rumour for Diddy Kong racing was/is quite solid. It might or might not come true, but the narrative at least seems plausible:
- Monster helped on the Retro Donkey Kong games
- Retro helped on mario kart 7/8
- The mario kart engine is already there, Retro has experience with it
- No Diddy Kong in MK8
- Diddy Kong racing 2 was in development at some point
- Diddy kong trademark out of nowhere

For people who want to read the entire rumour from last year:
https://kevincallahangames.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/the-strange-development-of-diddy-kong-racing-2/

Nintendo purposely held off from showing Diddy Kong Racing 2 at E3 this year to avoid sabotaging the excitement around Mario Kart 8. It sounds like Diddy Kong Racing 2 will be revealed sometime in 2015, and released that same year.
This also makes sense.

On the other hand there's Emily Rogers flat out saying:
Wherever that rumor came from…well…it’s bogus. Not true. Monster Games is not making DKR for Wii U.

... but maybe that's because retro was doing it all along.

Trademarks don't mean anything. Never have.
This is not true.

However, they literally just "trademarked" the WORD "Diddy Kong." It's a wordmark, which ensures anyone else using the "word" Diddy Kong can (a) only do so with their permission (b) has to pay them a shit tom of money.

Doesn't say here but I would assume it's simply a renewable of an old trademark.

Nothing to see here. Not an indication of anything, other than that they intend to continue using Diddy Kong and wish to protect the use of that name.

With all of that said, and not related at all to this thread's news, I'm more convinced than not that Diddy Kong Racing 2 is a thing that's happening at this E3.

Iwata has come out on record recently saying they weren't finished with MK8 DLC. I don't have the source but GameXplain has talked about it frequently. Apparently from either a recent Iwata Asks or an investors meeting.

MK8 is an "evergreen title," along with SSB and Splatoon. They will support it via DLC for the duration of the Wii U's life.

They'd probably make their first one a masterpiece just like their first of every other genre they try.

You're talking about a two game sample size.

I'm old and slow and fat now, and my knees hate me just getting off the couch, but I can still be the best guy out on the basketball court for my first two pick up games of the day...

I'm really excited if the Diddy Kong rumor from last year turns out to be true. I was so excited at one point, I was making fanart of the idea. I never got around to finishing it though.

Part of me's tempted to have an Inkling there for some cross-promotion. Maybe have someone from Star Fox (Slippy for the joke factor I guess?) as another throw back to Rare.

Well, my point was that Diddy Kong Racing wouldn't interfere with Mario Kart 8 sales, which I think is true even if there is more Mario Kart DLC.

Personally, I don't consider GameXplain a credible source so I checked the investor briefings. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150507e.pdf

Iwata does refer to Mario Kart 8 DLC in reference to the fiscal year ending in March 2016, but it's not entirely clear if he means recently released DLC will maintain a player base through the next fiscal year and he's grouping it with future DLC for Smash Bros. or if he means more DLC is being made and will be coming to MK8. I don't really consider it as a sure thing that is definitely coming, although you can interpret it that way if you want to.

Shit was it?

There's also this one from some Spanish Nintendo magazine:

diddy_kong_mario_kart_8_scan.jpg

Not confirmation tho.

Edit: maybe they confused Diddy for Donkey?

Not Spanish Nintendo magazine (although they are done by the same people) but Hobby Consolas (all consoles magazine). They are actually shit, do not know anything before hand and usually do fuck ups like this all the time.

In the Melee REVIEW, they said diddy kong was playable because there was an old screen with DK fighting agasint small Donkey kongs on adventure mode. Which showed that they clearly never played the game.

Also look at the renders they used. That magazine is the biggest here (sadly) and still amateur hour. Same with Nitendo "Official" magazine (is official, but they do not get any real info from Nintendo).

Now that I think about it, it has to be Diddy Kong Racing.

What other reason would he be left out of Mario Kart 8?

No way is it Diddy Kong Racing. Makes zero sense in my eyes.

I'm also doubtful about a standalone Diddy Kong game... I reckon (read: hope) this is just some DLC at best.

I refuse to believe RETRO is in on it, either way.

What Wii U games haven't underperformed? I'm genuinely curious.

Based on the current install base, I'd say these games haven't underperformed:
Mario Kart 8
Smash for Wii U
Splatoon
NintendoLand
Wind Waker: HD
3D World
Super Mario Bros. U
Hyrule Warriors
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Shovel Knight

That "future MK8 DLC" is a rumor based on info that was just incorrectly interpreted. At the last investor meeting for the end of the fiscal year (a meeting taking place at the beginning of May, but only handling business events before April 01), they said that MK8 would get more DLC. But the DLC they referred to was the DLC2 that arrived in late April 2015, since that release date was on the next fiscal year.

That was before the internet and being able to update existing games. MK8 still has a big active community and still sales. Another DKR would be incredibly pointless unless it was an expansion pack for MK8, which I would quite like actually.

Why are we assuming that a new Diddy Kong Racing would be exactly like the first one?

Maybe they would try to really change things up and do something drastically different from the traditional kart racing formula.

Does anyone remember Donkey Kong Racing? The tech demo for GameCube?

GameXplain already pointed out that the fiscal report was probably referring to DLC Pack #2.

No, but it underperformed.
Do we have any recent data about DK TF sales? I wonder if it'll reach 1 million eventually.

That's unfortunate because I really felt it was probably Nintendo's best game in 10 years with a God Tier soundtrack for the ages.
Yup, it's really a shame.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/wiiu.html

Same here. I'd love to see an open-world kart racing game by Retro.
Considering how good the world hub mechanic was on N64, they (Monster Games, with Retro Studios help) can build something truly special on Wii U.
