Itagaki: I WILL RELEASE Devil's Third in North and South America

Danthrax

Batteries the CRISIS!
I may be forgetting some but these are games that Nintendo localized to English but Nintendo of America did not release in North America:

  • Devil World
  • Mother 1* (As Earthbound Beginnings)
  • Sin and Punishment*
  • Custom Robo 64
  • Another Code: R
  • The Last Window (Hotel Dusk 2)
  • Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland
  • Disaster: Day of Crisis
  • Xenoblade Chronicles**
  • The Last Story**
  • Pandora's Tower**

*Came out years later on VC
**Released years after release due to Operation Rainfall and outside partnerships

It would not be surprising if Devil's Third was next considering the track record here.

And there are many more games Nintendo has made or published that have never been localized at all.

Fatal Frame II was released simultaneously in Europe and Japan three years ago, in June 2012.

There were rumblings that Europe was translating Fatal Frame 4 and it would release May 2009, 10 months after its July 2008 release in Japan, but it seemed like it was canceled because Grasshopper or Tecmo refused to fix the bugs for Nintendo without payment.

The New Play Control version of Chibi-Robo, released June 2009 in Japan, probably wouldn't have been too tough to localize considering the GameCube version had been localized already.

Other games that never made it out of Japan for Wii included Captain Rainbow (kind of understandable, at least for the U.S. in 2008) and Zangeki no Reginleiv (would have been nice because it used the MotionPlus attachment).

Anyway, yes, you've firmly established a history of NoA not bringing games to America that they clearly could with little trouble. It's infuriating.

Isn't a big focus of Devils Third the online component? Not releasing this in NA/SA of course sucks for those regions, but it would hurt Europe and Japan as well. The game probably won't sell much, but having the Americas would certainly help keep the online alive for a bit longer period of time.

Not surprised that NoA is being idiotic once again. I know I keep bringing it up in threads, but they still haven't released Golden Sun: The Lost Age on Wii U VC despite other regions getting it months ago. They released the first game a long time ago. It seems odd that they wouldn't release the sequel since it continues the story of the first game. Hey thanks for buying Golden Sun but fuck off because you are not getting the sequel.

Devils Third looked rough a year ago, but honestly I thought recent pictures looked decent. Also if the game is fun to play, then the graphics aren't that big a deal to me.

I'm thinking Reggie read every Devils Third thread here on Gaf, and said Fuck it, we can't release that game here.

And Itagaki has an even better one.

I wasn't implying he had a poor one, my statement about Next Level was a general one, not a comparative one.

He's a good dev and I'll freely admit he made good games despite his hatred for my beloved Tekken.

Even if its a good game its going to bomb unfortunately

This is unfortunately true.

People said the exact same thing about Splatoon.

1 million and counting.

Splatoon didn't get a massively negative response like Federation Force did. I don't think it's an appropriate comparison.

Taken parody.

*itagaki calls Reggie*

Itagaki: By my own will I will make sure Devils Third is released in north and South America.

Reggie: Good luck

Maybe they played it? I'd love to be wrong, but it really does look bad. Not trying to shit post, but I'm seriously wondering if that's a possible reason.

It looks bad to me. Like a modern Duke Nukem without the funny.

But maybe it has decent multiplayer and Nintendo doesn't want competition for Splatoon?

For me it looks medium budget with some whack zany shit added.

But there were a couple of great games over the years with exactly that premise, like No More Heroes or God Hand.

So on Itagaki's Facebook the most recent post he responded to was this one:

WBrIHjK.jpg

It felt weird he would single out a post talking about digital-only.

Searched online and GoNintendo had this:

itag.png

http://gonintendo.com/stories/237240-is-itagaki-hinting-at-a-digital-only-release-for-devil-s-third

He made a post about how he could only talk about stuff that wasn't under NDA. Maybe this was his way around it?

Honestly I would much rather have a third-party publisher like Xseed pick it up and give a limited physical release than Nintendo doing an all digital one.

Speaking of reach it seemed like several members were sure it was changing publishers in NOA. If it's digital-only why would they change publishers?

I mean the cost to NOA to put up a fully localized game on the Eshop can't be high at all for the revenue they would get. I don't see it being published by someone else if it's a digital release.

Anybody have any insight?

Posting in this thread may not be the best for people to still pay attention but I still think this digital-only thing is interesting with his Facebook responses.

I have an appointment with some NoA reps in a couple of weeks. If nothing new is shared by then, I'll ask around and see what I can find out.

Awesome, thanks! Unfortunately I fear you'll just get a "we have nothing to share" comment but it's not like anyone else is asking

I know stealh missions aren't your forte, but maybe you could raid the Nintendo tombs and bring us all back some treasures?

Thanks but with the way Itagaki is talking about news being released soon and the game being out in Japan beginning of August I think information would be out then. I would like to know how NOA can release a physical copy but NOA can't.

Possibly digital only you say?

Honestly my feeling. I was disappointed in NOA not publishing but was happy that another publisher like Xseed would still provide a physical release.

Would rather have it as a third-party physical release than a first-party digital one.

If eShop only release is only option for them, I would accept that.... ;(
Just I want to play this game as this will be my first WiiU title.

I need my physical copy, or else I might just cancel my pre-order. :/

I won't pay full price for data, no way.

Looking forward to the game releasing next month. I hope it works out for Itagaki and Valhalla. Hopefully there's a detailed post-mortem at some point. I would to hear the full story behind the Devil's Third's troubled development.

But if there's no physical release... you won't have a pre-order to cancel...

I wouldn't be too worried though! :)
Is this a hint?? You seemed to have known about Rodea's publisher being NISA a few months back too!

If Devil's Third really is switching publishers, I wonder how delayed the release will be. Hopefully still in 2015, though the longer they wait the less likely I am to buy it. Too many games at the end of the year!

Exactly what I wanted to see. I know you probably can't respond to this post in any but thanks.

Once I saw him liking that digital post and responding to that comment about digital-only I thought it was a clear hint.

Though it seemed like several posters were sure it had switched publishers. As a game I'm actually really interested in I'll like a physical release. I may buy it digital as well.

Now for Fatal Frame if that can't get a physical release through NOA I hope another publisher can get it. I wonder if Tecmo's involvement complicates that.

Maybe it'll be Gamestop exclusive like a few recent Vita games. Though I felt like that was Devil's Third fate with how it's still getting airtime on their TV's.

Is this a hint??

I don't really like teasing too much, so yeah, I'll say that as far as I know, there's good reason to believe that NoA is not publishing this and that another publisher will be releasing the game, which should mean that it is not a digital only release. Hopefully the plans don't change or fall through.

Itagaki has the worst luck ever on this project. :/

I wouldn't worry yet. Forgive me if this has been pointed out yet.

This interview has me hopeful.

GamesBeat: If it is a transition year to the NX next year, how do you look at how you want to operate and achieve this year?

Moffitt: I don’t know if I’d call it a transition year. We have the gas pedal to the floor on Wii U and 3DS. The games we showed today and the games we’ll have coming next year are a demonstration of that. Eight games coming between now and the end of the year on Wii U, starting with Super Mario Maker. They’re games that reach all audiences. There’s something for everyone.

You need Devil's Third to hit eight titles. It's seven otherwise (Mario Maker, Yoshi, Animal Crossing, Fatal Frame, Star Fox, Xenoblade, Mario Tennis). Of course, there could always be something unannounced...

Would Art Academy count as one even if it's digital-only? If there is another game for this year it has to be digital-only.

Could you say if the plans are for release close to Europe or much later?

Man as an European I feel so sorry for NA, but at this moment I trust in based Itagaki and his will to deliver in NA as well!

"Starting with Super Mario Maker," so I don't think so.

could be a mistake..
Though I do think Devil's Third will come to America, sooner or later. (based on nothing but my opinion).

edit: Also there's Rodea the Sky Soldier!

edit2: It got delayed to October, so I think it's definitely that one he's referring to.

Yoshi

Headmaster of Console Warrior Jugendstrafanstalt
I don't understand NoA's actions here. Releasing Yoshi's Woolly World shortly after Super Mario Maker is probably killing Yoshi and not releasing Devil's Third when Nintendo paid for development and has a severe content problem on Wii U anyway is super-strange. Wii U is doing better in the US than Europe, no? So why is Nintendo treating the US so badly? I'm happy NoE treats us quite well at the moment, with a good pacing of releases and no big titles missing for no good reason, but I feel NoA is sabotaging themselves and it's not fair for US Nintendo fans.

I honestly do not know at this point.

Oh well thanks for responding.

Maybe plans fell through and it will be digital-only. I hope not.

Why would he refer to Rodea? That's third-party. If he was talking about general releases there's all those Toy games, Guitar Hero and Just Dance.

If he's talking exclusives then Rodea wouldn't count either since it's on 3DS.

Devil's Third needs a robust online infrastructure that Nintendo needs to set up and support for at least 3 years. That may not be a wise investment if this game bombs.

He could be counting it since it's a Nintendo exclusive, but you're right that it's not as certain as I made it out to be. Could also be Art Academy.

And technically Devil's Third will be 3rd party too, in America.

From Facebook:

I was just about to post this myself since no one else seemed to recognize this happened.

I've been waiting for Kotaku or Polygon or ANYONE to actually email and publish what the answers were.

It's not as though I can go "Hi, I'm a nobody posting on NeoGAF who would make a thread about your responses. Care to answer a few questions on my/our behalf?"

I know a few sites have begun sending out their questions. Anyone have a rough estimate as when we'll get some answers?

Between this and Yuji Horii slipping/not giving a shit on revealing DQVII/VIII coming westward I half wonder if NoA wanted a "wow look at all this stuff actually coming over" ND.

Some guy managed to get an interview with him just by friending him on Facebook and saying "hey, I'm coming to Japan for a DOA tournament, can I interview you?" so cold-messaging him might not be such a hopeless idea.
