Now that it's pretty much confirmed, the "we need DQ7 in the west" threads will turn into "we need a release date for DQ7 and 8!".

I wonder how long this has been underway.

If it happens, then cool, I'll pre-order both games and add them to my DS Dragon Quest collection. If not, then why would that guy even say such a thing, especially at a Japanese-only event?

If this does happen hopefully they just announce/confirm it soon and get it out of the way, like Nintendo did when Reggie spilled the beans on Fire Emblem Awakening.

It wan at a stage show as part of a French event. So it makes more sense in that context.

Until I am able to pre-order the game, I won't believe it. Hell, until I'm actually playing it on my 3DS I won't believe it.

That's how I feel. All the more reason why this should be officially announced in order to make 2015 the best year in gaming for the ages.

Famitsu has published their own story about the Square Enix showcase at Japan Expo: http://www.famitsu.com/news/201507/05082479.html

They have a better account of yesterday's announcement:
最後に、それぞれ感想を述べる中、堀井氏は「ひとつ発表をしたいと思います。『DQVII』、『DQVIII』のニンテンドー3DS版をフランスで出したいと思います!」と、サプライズ発表! これには観客からも大きな喜びの声が挙がる! 一方、青海氏は「いやいや、正式発表はまだですから!」と慌てていたが? 正式発表が待ち遠しい!

At the end of the DQ stage, Yuji Horii said "I want to announce one thing. I want to release Dragon Quest VII and VIII for 3DS in France!", to which DQ producer Ryota Aomi replied: "Wait! There is no official announcement yet!"

So it doesn't seem 100% certain at the moment but I guess Horii definitely wants to make it happen.

Aaaaaaaaand it's gone...

No, no, I still have hope.

Well if I'm the creator of some games I want as many people to play them as possible but that doesn't mean the company is willing to allocate the funds to make that happen.

But it could also simply means he announced the games while there is no official announcement yet (which is true !) . I don't think SE would announce the games at a French event with a french localization first, seems pretty unorthodox. ;-)

I'd assume they want to keep him sweet, I don't think they can contractually make mainline DQ games without his say so. And it's not a huge cost for these ones given the bulk of the translation work is done.

pretty sure it's happening

Waking up to this news again feels surreal.
Two huge Dragon Quest games are coming! Everyone was convinced DQ7 was a lost cause at this point in the 3DS' life. It sort of leaves me with questions on how it's possible? When are these expected out and Who translated them/ is translating? It's possible DQ7 is already done/ near completion but was held back, otherwise I have no idea how they got the manpower together to translate both these huge games for 2016 (I guess DQ7 could be winter 2015 if we're lucky). Treehouse seems pretty packed with projects at the moment but the mention of French translation makes me think it'll be NOE handling translations - I guess SE could have got off their arse and is doing it themselves. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Edit: Just read the Famitsu story above. That's more worrying.

If true, this is fantastic news for 3ds users. Fingers crossed.

Next, give me Rocket Slime 3 and I'll be ecstatic.

Considering SE has only published one 3DS game in Europe I'm not sure they'd announce it all.

Well it depends how much he wants it to happen. DQVII was that long ago that the developer(ArtePiazza & Cattle Call IIRC) might not be available and Square Enix's presence on 3DS is miniscule.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Yeah, this is Fire Emblem: Awakening all over again, sort of. I.e. an announcement made before when it should've been done.

That's my view point on this now. These games are perfect for mobile (I just wish they were in landscape, not portrait).

I disagree, lack of landscape and controller support, makes them not perfect for mobile at all. Though I could take the portrait only mode, if they would add controller support. I might even pick up a NVidia shield just for the DQ games.

Yeah, Horii wouldn't say such a thing unless there were plans, I wouldn't worry about that. I just worry about how long we'll have to wait

WOW, that's some worrying news to read. I truly hope it does come out in the west.

The fact that he calls it an announcement is pretty telling there's something in the works.

Oh don't worry, they may not bother to bring the 3DS localizations over but they will definitely do it for those imaginary PS4 versions you want!!

I need more Dragon Quest in my life! Got on board with VIII and then IX which were both amazing, went back and played the SNES era and neeeeed moooooore.

Didn't a similar thing happen with The Last Story in 2011? As in Sakaguchi announced a PAL localisation before NoE did the official one complete with trailer, website, etc.

I didn't like DQX and only really like the Monsters games but I'd probably pick these up just for the hell of it to show support or whatever.

Yup, you got me. I want them to release the games on that console I don't own.

I just read the Famitsu article but come on. It's basically confirmed if SE allowed Famitsu to make such write-up.

I don't care if they release DQ 7/8 as a Dual Pack like the Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire pack, shown below:

It'll sell.

Wait, what? Does Hori actually own part of the DQ license?

Uh yeah. He owns the majority of the DQ license. Nothing happens for DQ without his approval. I'm also pretty sure that Toriyama and Sugimori (sp?) also both own a piece of the IP.

Didn't know that, I thought it was a Square Enix property and he was just the heading producer for it.

Yuji Horii isn't an employee of Square Enix. He is a freelancer (with his own personal studio called Armor Project). In fact, Enix itself started out as a video game publisher which employed zero internal programmer/designer and struck publishing deals with freelancers instead.

Yes, I am aware Enix was a different company before they merged with (or were bought by?) Squaresoft. Just didn't know the kind of deals they made and assumed Square Enix held the full rights like they did with Sqauresoft properties. Pretty interesting stuff.
