Pokken Tournament for Wii U (Spring 2016 WW) Announced at Pokemon World Championships

Pokemon doesn't excite me anymore.

...They even used the tekken font.

Oh well at least it's a fighting game by a company that makes good fighting games. The Wii U really needs em lol

Sigh, I have to buy a Wii U now. I haven't touched anything Nintendo for almost a decade now. It is practically a given this will get a bundle, right?

Movements looking bad. They don't have to cartwheel around the screen like naruto but they don't have to shuffle around slowly and stiffly either

I wonder if the game will get a title change once it gets over here. What is exactly Pokken?

I also hope that all the major fighting types make it into the game. Hitmonlee's my favorite and I would like to see Drowzee or Hypno in this as well, but if they don't make it in I could just settle with Gardevoir.

Nah Pokken Tournament is the title.

Though Germany changed it to Pokemon Tekken because Pokken means chickenpox there.

You know someone is professional when they can commentate a game that they have never played before.

Wow, I never realized how few characters had been revealed. I'm sure there's going to be more revealed at least - I'd have to riot if the game was 10 fighters, 20% of which were Pikachus. :p

As a Raichu fan im kind of Sad....but Lucha Fem pika looks interesting. If they add another cosplay Pikachu though, WE RIOT!

Still crossing my fingers for aaaany one of the following to appear on the roster:
* Mawile
* Lilligant
* Meloetta
* Diancie
* Braixen (because Delphox is the Robocop 3 of the fennekin trilogy)

Failing those, any of these would still make me moderately happy :3
* Absol
* Sylveon
* Glaceon
* Milotic
* Mismagius

Now watch as not a single one I listed becomes playable :p

So what's local play gonna look like? Split screen to see each player's perspective or will the camera position itself so we can see both fighters equally like Smash and Soulcaliber?

hopefully the wii u pad and the tv screen having different player viewpoints, though I always thought that would be taxing to the wii u right?

That would be great as an option, done in the same style as Hyrule Warriors local co-op but I hope that isn't the way to play local matches. It doesn't feel right that one person gets the glorious HD display and the other gets relegated to the Gamepad.

To be honest, lucha pikachu is too awesome for me to complain.

And the Pikachu during the tournament was really awesome, others sets like the Charizard vs Machamp were really fun too. Suicune was a beast at the beginning but a lot of players seems to have understood how to counter it.

I really don't care too much about Pokemon but a tekken like game (edit : sorry, i meant 3D fighting game) with zoning like that is really cool from my perceptive, i just hope there isn't too much juggle, always hated that in Tekken.... (A Suicune combo was a little like that... But i hope it's only an isolated case)

You mean you don't want them to say their English names when the game is localized for the West? Why?

Because that's some baby shit that the anime has everyone believe is canon. Pokemon make animal noises, just go watch any of the animated specials made to advertise upcoming games:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-X03D3tSVU - Black 2 White 2 Special

The only time the anime has bled into the games is Smash (not canon anyway) and Pikachu saying his name in Gen 6 which is an exception because Pikachu.

The current version of the arcade cabinet uses the anime voices, which thankfully is a mix of some pokémon saying their names (Gardevoir/Sirnight) and some grunting (Charizard/Lizardon).

But hey, maybe TPCi won't dub it. Smash was localized by Nintendo themselves so Greninja doesn't sound off. Maybe if Bamco does the localization we might get really good beastly grunts.

You mean you don't want them to say their English names when the game is localized for the West? Why?

Because Japanese did it better. As you can hear it, they put more emotion when they speak their name and they're given a bit more leeway (see Blaziken going ATATATATA! despite not having those for his syllables). Also they're fine to groan or cry out. They use professional voice actors and actually voice over the whole deal rather than say a name and replay it.

This is not the case for English dub. While it's noticeable in 4kids dub the current TPCi dub has this problem much more obvious. It's like they recorded someone say the Pokemon's name once then simply replay it.

You can easily compare Pikachu's performance vs. say Geodude. Pikachu has much vocal range vs. Geodude's repeated stuff.

I love it when people post this misinformation / myth!

Go play a game as far as Gen 1 and talk to a Pokemon, like say Jigglypuff or Machoke. I'll wait.

Or better yet...

And no don't give me that "Mewtwo is a psychic!" shit.

The anime is its own canon, and the games have their own too. Origins is a fucked up special.

I'm pretty confident they won't dub over.

Hasn't it mostly been grunts and stuff anyway.

Nah. While it's not obvious to say Lucario or Suicune, it's quite easy to hear Gardevoir say "Sirknight" or Weavile say "Manyula". Even Blaziken goes "Sha sha!"

Pokemon only say their name to make it easy for kids to remember their names and help with brand awareness.

Also, Charizard probably won't be dubbed. He never is, because his roars sound generic even if he's actually saying Lizardon, just really deeply and in pieces. Enough actually, that an English speaking person would think he's saying Charizard anyway. I know I did as a kid, since it just sounds like "rawr-rawn" which sounds enough like Charizard.

Now Lucario's voice is a little bit of a different story, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Namco just re-use his lines from Smash 4 because they're good and are already fit for a fighting game.

they never dub mons that share the same name (Pikachu) or make grunts (Charizard, Onix, etc.). With that said, for the latter, if you actually concentrate you can hear some intonation towards their Japanese names.

navi girl's name is Nia, her VA is Marina Inoue (Yoko from TTGL, Tagiru from Digimon XW Young Hunters, Elle from Pokemon XY).

Well, if Hyrule Warriors is anything to go by yes, it is. And HW's results are extremely piss poor -- both players get like sub-30 FPS and lose graphical fidelity when using the co-op mode. Of course, this could be chalked up to it being relatively unoptimized for co-op and factor in that HW has to have over hundreds of enemies on a map/screen and it's easy to see why it was dipping into the 15-20 FPS range when in co-op.

However, I wouldn't want a fighting game's local MP to be relegated to two screens like that especially if it risks smooth 60 FPS (which a FG with any technical skill required needs 60 FPS).

It would be better if they did either splitscreen on a single screen similar to Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi games or if they did alter the camera to mimic how the Storm games do it. Doing it the first way may still result in some lost graphical fidelity but it wouldn't be terribly noticeable and it wouldn't be as risky to do like streaming a second player's screen to the GamePad is.

If TPC are serious about this game being played locally for tournaments they'll figure something out. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Also:

It was pretty daunting at first to do commentary. Not because of the gameplay for me, but because I didn't know every Pokemon by heart, their skills or how to pronounce their names lol.

The music in this game is slightly disappointing. I wish they used remixes from the main games instead. That might just be me though.
