Star Wars Battlefront Beta Thread: He’s holding a thermal detonator!

Really? But posters in this thread said it looks terrible. 720p and all.........?
DICE did a great job on the graphics and textures. Its a beautiful game on all platforms. If the screens aren't side by side between all platforms perhaps you wouldn't even notice which is which. I have no idea how sensitive you are to resolution but the graphics pretty textures and particle effects should be noticeable across all platforms.

I don't think Battlefield 4 (or I should say 5) needs to dial back stuff like player count and vehicle interactivity like Battlefront to work. 64 player Conquest is to me a defining point of Battlefield. But Battlefront highlights how abhorrent Battlefield 4's abundance of unlocks and attachment gimmicks are, especially the grind to access them, and the huge imbalances on vehicles when you're starting from scratch.

As much as I enjoy the games, it's where DICE lost the plot a bit with Battlefield 3 and 4. It's a sandbox battlefield of toys and tools but so many of them are hidden behind fucking stupid XP grind walls, and there is in reality probably far too many tools and toys and loadouts than necessary for a fun, balanced, and still diverse game. Half the shit just doesn't need to exist at all.

Battlefront seems a lot more focus in that respect, and it works in its favour.

Walker Assault wasn't even close to balanced in the Alpha, so I'm a little surprised to hear its still so imbalanced now in this beta.
From what I heard Alpha was a bit too balanced on the Rebel side, now it's clearly too heavy on the Imperial side. Still had lots of fun but I have to imagine it can be tweaked properly. Doesn't seem horribly broken.

Is this live on the PS4 yet? I am not seeing ti.

Nope, some of us were lucky enough to snag early access codes on PS4/xbox/pc

See I'm not entirely clear on the balance issue, there has been a couple games where you can literally crush the AT-AT's almost in the first bomber run, however most games imperials win. It seems to be more balanced around the fact that people actually shoot the things when they're open and defend the points, however currently people don't seem to be doing much of either.

That being said though I'm having a lot of fun with the game, the Cyclic Rifle with the AC280 (rebel blaster rifle) is a great combo, and having the Jetpack + Personal Sheild makes an insane get out of jail free card.

is the game available on PSN yet? I know it doesn't officially release until tomorrow but is the option to "purchase" it there? I can't seem to find it whenever I search "Star Wars Battlefront beta"

I pretty much agree with you. Ive put hundreds of hours into BF4 and Im still unlocking gun attachments when I rank up. I mean I pretty much already have the loadouts that I like so I dont really use the new ones....but its still kind of a nice little "gift" for leveling up. I hope they have a lot of stuff for Battlefront to unlock, even if its just cosmetic items.

Exactly. I've gotten so tired of the endless grind I don't see myself buying another traditional multiplayer FPS until it cycles back around to World War II. It's why I'm just renting Black Ops 3 to play the campaign and why it'll be unlikely that I'll buy Battlefield 5. It stopped being fun and just became a grind.

Battlefront does has unlocks but they are extremely streamlined and not overbearing. The lack of attachments really seals the deal.

First time looking into this game and I noticed it's made by Dice. Is it it fair to say that PvP in this game is pretty much Battlefield but with a Star Wars look?

Can someone tell me if EA has done anything especially stupid regarding this game? I'm considering putting it on my radar, but not if there are any particularly deplorable business decisions behind it.

Man, I swore I wasn't going to try the open beta to keep the experience fresh in November, but you guys are making it hard to resist.

I'm truly sorry to hear that but I'm sure you and your friends will be having too much fun to care about the possible short comings on that platform.

Oh I'm sure that'll be the case. I'll be salty for a few weeks if the version I get is significantly inferior, but afterwards I won't care because in the end, I'll finally be playing a new Battlefront with friends and that's something I've wanted for nearly 10 years.

Battlepacks, Eats, it was all about Battlepacks. Sure you could grind them out by hitting XP milestones and then have your dreams crushed when you opened them up and got junk or you could play into EA's hands and pay real dosh for them. Fifa Ultimate Team has a lot to answer for. Still Bad Company 2 had gated weapons per class locked of requiring you to gain them via XP including some of the core class skills but the time to unlock things was super quick. Good to hear Battlefront is a bit more reigned in.

I enjoyed so far. It's very arcade-y. It does not strike as a 'pro' e-sports title, it's very casual. And fun. Not sure it will maintain appeal in long term.

Sounds awesome! How's the difficulty (or are there settings)?

My skills have seriously declined with age and I have to play everything on easy these days.

Mass Effect 3 is probably partially to blame. The battlepacks there were successful.

having not played the beta, how does the AT-AT work?...so you don't control movement, you just control the firing of weapons?...can anyone play as the AT-AT or is it some special power-up?

No pings?

Performance seemed okay, but there's no latency info. It's pretty dumb. I have no idea who I'm connecting to, or where, or what my latency is.

I hadn't even thought about the unlock system. It's nice that in Battlefront you can spend your credits as you want and unlock what you want.
