DualShock 4 build quality. This is baffling.

I have the ps4 since August, and I find the controller ok. Only complaint: the triggers. The don't feel "right" to use, can't describe it properly
They're mushy and the distance on the pulls is stupidly long. They're also incredibly poorly made. All of my controllers have triggers that stick from time to time.

When I first started hearing about this I thought people were just overreacting, they weren't. I'm now on my third Dualshock 4 having broken 2 in exactly the same way, in exactly the same spot. I don't know if it's just me but I have broken the R2 button on 2 Dualshock 4s. There are 2 plastic pegs that hold the button in the controller and I have broken one of those pegs off on each of my controllers, which then makes it so the R2 button sticks when pressed in...super frustrating.

Not only that: I can't precisely tell if I'm pushing them completely or just partially, and that bugs me. Other than that, I really like it, it's a big improvement from ds3.

I fixed the r2 trigger somehow the plastic broke for some reason.
Is there any official word of an upcoming Ps4 pro controller? Because it broke in every single way for me and Im NOT buying another one.
Edit:
Any rubber recommendations for analog sticks?

I sent my first controller back to SONY and had to pay the shipping. Then when the second and third messed up I said f*ck it and purchased better sticks and new triggers online. My 3 Xbox One controllers are still running flawless. It's almost as if this is sony's way of making sure they make money on the sh*tty build of their controllers.

Circle button on my anniversary controller has gotten real mushy. Also the triggers are ridiculously sensitive. The faintest touch or brushing of the button registers as a press.

Battery life is way better then my launch controller though!

Lol

The complete opposite for me. Think the ds4's are kinda solid. X1 pads are ass.

Admit you don't know anything about it, Intentionally (or ignorantly) misspell Xbox, and go on to assure us that the DS4 battery is better. Jenniferlawrence ok gif worthy.

Even if rechargable batteries didn't exist, you could get something like 250-300 AAs for the price of a new controller, that will absolutely last you longer than a DS4 would.

Are you really offended I hyphenated Xbox? It was out of ignorance, which, if you weren't so busy being upset, you could have deduced by the fact I said I don't know what batteries they used. So clearly I don't own that console. And I didn't once say which controller was better, just that I prefer rechargeable options to having to buy batteries.

Year of active Destiny gaming has destroyed rubber from sticks [ripping and such] and left stick doesn't register reliably anymore when pressed.

I think I need new pad, soon.

right stick of mine hast been almost entirely ripped for months and i havent played ps4 seriously in about 6 months or so, it ripped after 4 months of extremely active play.

The right trigger also sticks a bit now and feels mushy to press, so now im in the market for a new controller, 50 bucks... sweet.

Anybody who plays Fighting games now the down button is constantly breaking.

I would honestly pay 150 for a controller that had the exact same layout but much better materials

The DS4 is an unmitigated disaster, a failure of product design and manufacture and lastly an insult to the customers who trusted Sony with a purchase.

I'd still like to have a smooth and not rubbery controller skin. All the ones I've seen also have bits around the analog sticks that encroach on them in a way that stops you from pushing the stick all the way in any direction without a little force.

Not actually that important
I fucking hate it.
I am NOT buying another of those expensive pieces of shit.
Even a new magma controller we had just gotten and my buddy's freaking Anniversary controller (!) crapped out on R2 and are all squeaky squashy... so fucking frustrating, worst pad's built ever.
So we can't even play couch co-op games cause what's the point in wasting any more money, it's a freakin' lottery to find a decent one and you never know when it'll start crapping out. I would've thought the problems had been fixed after almost two years of production with a corrected 2.0 build but evidently not.

Just bought a brand new controller, should I be worried? Are we talking RROD level failure rates here?

It's too rooted in anecdotal failure tales to say for sure, as soon as I'll tell you that yes, it seems more or less comparable you'll get someone else telling you that it's not even close since they have N number of controllers and they're all perfect, same for those of all their relatives, friends of friends and President Obama.
At the very least is a widespread issue and you could incur in a model with the mentioned problems (and that is another thing that really pisses me off, it's not even A problem, no, it's MANY that it could suffer from)

The my controllers thumpads are shot, my USB ports don't charge half the time, and my controllers lose signal if I'm more than 10' from my console. Great ergonomics crap quality. The only reason I haven't switch to my Xbone is that most of my friends are on ps4 😓

My red DS4 seems to still work fine, but my 20th anniversary one has the hyper-sensitive triggers. I don't have a PS4, so I only use them on PC (although rarely), but it's still a little annoying.

This is what I was thinking, this thread is for people who are coming here to complain. I take really good care of my stuff but hearing the stories here makes me think they are just destined to fail.

I also take great care of all my devices, but the build quality of the DS4 has been a real disappointment. It only took a few weeks for rubber to start peeling off the sticks. Which is a shame because I really like its ergonomics.

Have had no issues on my two launch controllers until this weekend.

R2 trigger gave way (same spot as everyone else).
Spent the $5 on replacement parts and will fix on Monday.

So, I just had to fix my R2 trigger yesterday. I bought a white DS4 back in November and I guess between Battlefield and COD I fucked up the trigger. I open it up, which was a pain in the ass too, it's locked together tight, I break one of the pegs off of the right trigger in the process, and I lose the spring. Great.

Apparently it'll work without the spring, it'll just feel a little less tense. Then I see the infamous blade on the trigger that activates the button but slowly destroys the rubber nipple in the process. So I decided to open up my launch DS4 which I stopped using a while ago and thankfully manage to get the trigger and spring out intact and just swap them.

Works fine now, but I went on Amazon and bought a ten pack of replacement triggers. I've been using a grip so my sticks haven't worn, though I'm now afraid that playing Advanced Warfare will eventually destroy my left stick.

In short, what the hell Sony? I used the same DS3 for 5 years straight with the only issues being the sticks wearing smooth. I used the same DS2 for 8 years before the rubber fell off of the sticks.

The DS4 ergonomics are amazing and I love it, but hot damn is the build quality crap.
I feel ya. My white ds4's left analog gets stuck in the up left position. I've opened and cleaned it. Still gets stuck. Pisses me off.

I was in the camp of "y'all got screwed with yours I have two and nothing has happened to them" but godDAMMIT now I'm pissed.

My R2 trigger hinge broke while playing Uncharted NDC. This is crap. I've owned plenty of consoles and none of their triggers broke. My god damn 360 wired controller still works perfectly and I used it way more, especially for shooters, than I've ever used the DS4.

I hope mine will be okay. I don't go very hard on them, and they're now $74.99 plus about ten dollars tax.

I was worried about the d-pad after a couple of nights with THPS 5, but it seems fine.

Hyperbolic much, for me its the best controller out there with a ton of tech packed into it, best controller ever made.

I helped split my friends on PS4 and XB1. I sort of feel bad since the XB1 controller is just plain better for us so it's even worse when the PS4 controller, which isn't as comfortable to begin with, also starts to fall apart. We shouldn't have to pay $150 for controllers that do their jobs without screwing up.

Have purchased 4 total. 1 no longer charges, one has a stuttering d-stick, and 2/4 have the rubber peeled off.

The newer builds do not have the rubber peel off.

Any consensus on the best battery to attempt for a replacement? Also, is it possible to fix the stuttering d-stick?

If you want to replace the battery I would only recommend this guide and battery:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/2rtimv/diy_double_dualshock_4_battery_capacity_internal/

Basically all "replacement" batteries labeled for DS4 are bs. I replaced mine originally with some generic battery off Amazon that everyone recommended when they really had no idea what they were talking about. My battery life fell by more than 30% or more with the ones I got (I bought 3 different types).

When I did this guys guide it was a serious improvement. There are detailed explanations about why other batteries suck and why this particular battery is better and why you have to swap the wires.

If only the press would take notice of this and start asking Sony about it, maybe they would actually bother to fix it.
But sadly they don't seem to care.

I can live with cosmetic damage, I just hope that the buttons don't start playing up.

Alright, after almost a year without problems, the rubber on my 3rd DS4 started to peel off again last week.
But not only that, yesterday I noticed that my player randomly stopped skating in NHL 16. Today in Witcher 3 I saw the same behaviour, Geralt not only stopped running but he made turns into directions I was never even close to pressing.

Trying to rebuild the database and reset my controller now, but I don't think that is a software problem.

I had some weird drifting thing going on in Destiny earlier where the aim would randomly go upwards without me touching it. Tried a different game (Uncharted) and the same thing was happening. Resetting the controller didn't help. If other people are getting the same thing it could be a firmware bug.

Regarding the sticks peeling, get some caps off eBay, they cost next to nothing.

Just replaced my anologs which started to break with the aluminum ones, also my trackpad is creaky, gets stuck sometimes, tried taking part to see what's up and clean it but not seeing anything, jeez.

Sony can't get anything right completely, dualshock 3 design was horrible but it was a freaking rock when it came to durability and the battery lasted days, dualshock 4 is the perfect design with crappy components and a joke of a battery, just bought a D4 at bestbuy and the triggers sound like a cricket every time i press them, for fucks sake

The battery has almost twice the capacity on DS4 than on DS3.

I have some of those but didn't get used to them. Now is the time to get some of those Xbox One sticks I guess :/

I'll open it up first to see if there is some dust underneath the sticks or whatever, but I'm pretty sure that won't help.

But the DS4 needs a charge after a few hours. It takes me several long play sessions to need a new DS3 charge.

Capacity doesn't matter to the user. It's the user experience that should be their focus.

I really hope there is a pro edition soon or the Hori FPS pad is more widespread. Sony's controllers are BS.

Aside from the poor triggers and bad analog material, my biggest complaint is battery life.

I'm doing a little CODathon in advance of Black Ops 3. 5 games on 360, 2 on PS4. I'm on my fifth 360 game and the battery light hasn't even started blinking. I had to charge in between COD Ghosts and Advanced Warfare (the PS4 games).

That is just pathetic.

Yeah you can shit on the controller as much as you want. But the battery is objectively superior.

That is what I was correcting.

superior means nothing when in real life term it performs worse, battery LIFE is worst and that's the whole point of it
